We had a Conrail RIP crew in our plant on 2 shifts. We would Bad Order a car and they did the repairs(a separate crew would switch the cars). Mostly doors and bulkheads. They had their own office at the end of the tracks (8 of them with 4 spots each) coming into our plant and used a John Deere Gator with torches, a welder and a ladder rack. We would offload and reload about 30 cars a day. Fun watching how they did stuff.

Im an intermodal trucker. The other day I looked at 35 different 53 ft empty mounted "cans" I found one but the chassis was crap. So I had to get a good chassis and do what's called a chassis flip. Too about 2 hrs. From inflate to outgate. With two of you there and the sun shining stand on the inside of the box to see if there's light coming in. That's a bad order box in the intermodal world. But I haul allot of food grade Hazmat and paper products.

There is a PRR X54 plug door boxcar at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania that is alleged to have had a door fall off the car and kill someone.Plug car door cars of that era were known to be dangerous. Good job on your field fix to get the doors back on. BTW I am a machinist of sorts taking valves, pumps and many other things and making cutaway models as mechanic learning aides by being able to see inside and how they work. Rather unique for sure.

My first job after Vietnam was working for ICGRR as a Special Agent, in E. St. Louis, Il. Got a call about an open box car door in mid August. Some Perp had forced open a box car load of raw cow hides from National Stock Yards. The huge waxed board container split open and hides spilled out like Niagra Falls! LOL what a pile of mess! When the plug doors have both rollers off the tracks, like this one has, be very careful that the safety hangers at the top of the door are still in place. Those doors are well over 1000 lbs a piece, and, have no other securement other than the safety hangers, when in this shape. I worked over 33 years as a railcar repairman, and have replaced those doors many times.

For 37 years I drove tractor trailers. 24 of those years were pulling tankers, both liquid and dry bulk pneumatic. Approximately 3,500,000 miles, all without even so much as a bent fender!!! In July 2016 I was diagnosed with Menier's Disease. Lost my DOT and my FAA medical certificates. Since retirement I have become a professional recliner tester!!

I am retired from the MI Army National Guard. You would have had too much fun riding with me when I ran KLS&C 85 and other engines on the KLS&C (12 inch to 1 foot scale!). Now I am a touch busy replacing the plastic trucks with Kadee sprung trucks on my model railroad and starting to do service work on my engines. A lot of HO scale work.

I service gas stations, and I can always use a hand pulling a pump out of a tank! The work is not as heavy, but sometimes I get to fight with bolts that rusted down to a full size smaller than what they were originally, and some days there are pipe wrenches, long cheater bars, and a lot of hammering! But it's an odd mix, because the gas dispensers themselves are a computer network, within a computer network, within a computer network. Sometimes I even know what I'm doing!

Sounds to me like they need to repair the door before using it again. As for a day at work I'm retired on disability now living on a fraction of the money I need. Trying to get a shop set up where I can tinker on projects at my own pace but doubt I'll live long enough to see it finished. You ever want to sit and char for a but though come on by someday. Every time you say a car has to go to the home shop for repairs all I think in my head is wonder when that one will be in my car spot at work lol. Sometimes depending on adjustment level of plug door roller you can get a pry bar under center of the wheel and leverage it back on track

I used to be a loader operator at a concrete plant. Ran the loader. Maintained the plant. Cleaned the plant and tried to keep the property safe. Well until our cement supplier decided they wanted to raise their price by not shipping cement to anyone. Allot of hot cold and early as hell days. Decent job for someone trying to get experience applicable for handling starting off as train crew in a town where you can’t get hired by a railroad

Quinton Murdock If you are a rail fan don’t let the railroad know. Almost the quickest way to end an interview or the hiring process before the interview is to include that you are a rail fan. If your resume / application mentions being a rail fan it would be best to edit that out. The railroads do not want to retrain rail fans.

I’ve seen worse rolling down he track. Several years ago on the way back from church, we passed a train waiting on a red board. The fifth boxcar in had an open door, and a pallet of bricks sitting about six inches from the edge of the open door. I drove down to the tower and told the operator about it. They either closed the door, ordeter the boxcar

Back in the early 1980s, I worked for a private car company, repair division. I recall that repairs made in interchange service were always billed to the car owner. I also recall there was a flat rate schedule for any given repair. One I can recall was a $2.00 fee for heating and straightening the grab irons on the ends of the car. They caught a guy who had a welding torch on a Cushman scooter who would race through the yard heating perfectly good grab irons (to char the paint) and sending a bill to the owner. He could do hundreds of cars a day, at $2.00 a pop. We were also told to never touch a suspect boxcar door because they could fall without warning and they are very heavy.

Many years ago a door fell off and landed on a brakeman here, he only lived because the rest of the crew ran over and lifted it enough for him to get out. He was off work for a long time and never did recover completely, and one of the other guys messed up his back lifting the door.

I can relate to that. My second year working at the local paper mill had me in material handling driving a bale clam which has two cast steel jaws that come straight together to grab the square bales of pulp. It was 20 below outside the dock with a howling wind and all the wet lap bales were frozen solid in the boxcar. My "instructor" had me set the jaws for the width of the stack and "hit it hard" to drive the jaws between the stacks. After several fruitless attempts he told me to back up and get a running start. I wound the lift truck up to about 15mph and hit the bales immediately blowing out the door and door rails and leaving me sitting on top the bales outside. My super heard the commotion and told me not to worry as it "happens all the time" and said our maintenance boys would have it cleaned up and put back together in no time which they did in about 2 hrs. Dirty jobs? Thirty years later I'm working out in the waste water treatment plant keeping the river clean. I know a little about dirty jobs.

The life of a carknocker is a string of temporary repairs. Those doors are always a problem. Between forklift collisions and cars getting slammed in switching they are always out of adjustment. All cars are hot potatoes. Hopper Carr’s always have problems with the bottom dump gates. And they all have brake rigging issues. Working trackside in all kinds of weather is tough work.

Retired Army Reserve, 21years! BUT Transportation Management Coordinator, 88N.... 88N's do many things, ports, intermodal, tracking, in-transit-visibility, and controlling of all assets i.e. if you needed 10 40 foot connex's moved, assign to x convoy 10 flatbeds...flatbed.... My job for year in Iraq 🇮🇶 while carrying a gun! Transportation Management at its best. The military training helped me with other skills, medical/security etc, and I remember responding to an accident on highway firefighters assumed I was Medic. Did some Shortline RR work too. (Bay Colony RR 1999) Mechanical RR work too... Factory work..... Alot of forklift Driving

My employer served a big papermill that received recycled cardboard as well as shipped the final product. The folks that unloaded the recycled stuff often knocked doors off, usually sliders and not plug doors but either way, they made a mess. They loaded a lot of the same type of car you have there, 60' TBOX double door boxcars. Our local grass seed warehouse loaded one last week, for what that's worth. Happy day from a retired railroader!

last week I was up to some property I inherited from my cousin and saw the switches had all concrete ties and the rails had concrete ties every 4th one. He was v.p. of a class one railroad and there is a gate to a mainline. He and a few friends had hopes of getting an abandoned rail line and starting a tourist railroad. A his equipment is amtrack certified and restored, hopefully my grandsons will have a desire to do it, I would but 76 is to old to start. the only difference is the steam engines are converted to oil. He would run to the scrape dealer and buy the engines and bring them back to his large sheds and they would restore them and make some changes to get certified for class one operation. also has 3 old diesels, and old Pullman in other sheds. the first shed has a large gantry with which they would lift the body up so they could work under it and there is a pit below that opens to a machine shop. Boy I wish I had this opertunity when younger, but still have my cousin, can't outrun cancer though.

R.I.P. jobs, almost applied for one in Guadalupe, CA. The add said welding experience helpful but not necessary, we’ll train. That means you handle the die grinder for a couple years till your ready to get your certs as a welder. Those tests are not easy! But having them you can get the big bucks. If you ever do broken or bent grab irons please show us. They are the most common reason a car is outlawed for safety reasons. The only thing a sub contracting car repair service won’t do is change wheelsets. At sometime ETR will need a steel building two stalls, and a storage track adjacent, then car inspections, wheel Spaulding repair, handbrake and air brake repairs, and keep ‘‘em rolling.

I envisioned a dark blue paint scheme with yellow pin stripes and yellow lettering with the ETR logo. I'm a retired finish painter and it would be a joy to strip and paint it for you at no charge, but live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and I know that you are in Ohio, so that's not practical. A 10-ton porta-power with different attachments can work wonders. I used a pancake ram with a cut-out wrench on a bolster bolt between the frames of a 75-ton narrow gauge loco one time to be able to lift the loco off the truck (each end) to be able to grease and place a high-density poly plastic disk between the loco and bolster bowl on the truck. Our shop only had 20-ton jacks to accomplish the lift, one end at a time. I was the only one there at the time who was small enough to get over the truck and between the frames to get to the bolts.
