You will need a 55 gallon plastic drum. Able to be sourced from places like Craigslist.com or Bookface Market Place.
Pig Nipple Waterers. I like the stainless steel ones. Easy to source from Amazon.
A step up drill bit, I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight. If you are only using it for plastic than you don't need a heavy duty expensive bit.
That is all you will need for a DIY pig waterer. These pig waterers last for a very long time. If the pigs hadn't broken the spout it would still be going. It is very handy to have 55 gallons of water out there on demand for your pigs.
This is for a homestead sized farm, this is not the best for commercial sized hog farms. This is great for small holdings and off grid farms. You can also hook this up to a rain catchment system and have free water for your DIY pig waterer!

I appreciate simple easy uncomplicated instructions. Just one thought/question, ~ might the 'white' barrel have any algae growth issues? ~ That funny Bruce, ~your time with him is such a special gift. Thank you for sharing those special moments. What fun God's creatures can be.

It might. I will paint it if that becomes and issue. Bruce is a lot fun :)

Pigs are also very smart. If I get pigs, I want to find a way to stimulate their brain. I've seen pigs play with vines and tree roots. I also heard if you plant a huge patch of Jerusalem artichokes, that the pigs will eat the tops, and maybe root for tubers, but will not kill the patch. It will return.

They are terribly smart. The other patch we had knew how to open that valve, so when they wanted to make a wallow they just drained the barrel. Our pigs have plenty of greenery to play with and around. Vines included! Plus there are 8 of them so they have companionship. Artichokes might work here. I will have to look into that. They tend to root up everything.

@@FlannelFarms I saw a utuber say they were extremely valuable in terms of fodder, as well as something that they enjoyed playing with. I live in North Carolina, so we got lots a pigs. Smithfield was an American company, till they sold out to the Chinese CCP backed company. Still think it was a stupid decision that lawmakers allowed. However, my husband's father kept pigs back in the day. Some of the stories that his mama told me just highlighted how smart they are. Some of them have charming personalities. If you ever heard the story from NC about the Pot Bellied Pig and Ball python that had a lawyer...that was his Mama's niece who owned them. 🐖🐷🐍

They have been really really easy in our experience. They eat a lot, like a lot a lot, so find a good feed source or make one :) Otherwise they are so much fun!

If memory serves I've found them on FB market place and Craigslist for between free, and $15 each.

How do you keep them from freezing in the winter?
@FlannelFarms
@FlannelFarms 8 күн бұрын
That depends on your winter temps. We are in coastal VA, and so far the heat retained by the large amount of water has kept them mostly unfrozen. We've had a few days in the single digits and they froze briefly. The pigs also suck on them and the heat from their mouths seems to keep them flowing. I don't have any other experience with weather colder than that.

How likely is your barrel to be tipped over by the pigs ? I like the idea though.

This video is a year old, and the system has worked beautifully. They only knock it over when it is empty, which is handy since it let's me know they need it refilled!

Does the water only comes out when they drink
@FlannelFarms

Yes! The nipples are spring-loaded. Sort of like a hamster waterer but with a spring, not just water pressure.

Hopefully they don’t keep braking the hose, what happened to the pvc pipe one for the pigs? Or was that one just for the chickens?
@FlannelFarms
@FlannelFarms Жыл бұрын
It was for the chickens only. I've switched now to using pig nipple waterers for the chickens also, I just cut the spring a bit so it is easier to depress.

Some do, some don't. I've had it both ways. If you put some JB weld on it when you put it in it certainly won't.
