Loved this video, I like all your explanations and for those that think she is too chatty, mute the video! There is no reason to complain to someone that is doing this for FREE!!! Her information is invaluable. Amazed at how small and detailed theses are. I need to watch more videos on backing and framing pastels, I'm getting quite a collection amassed and need to get them up and framed. The paper recommendations and pastel product comments are so helpful. I think I try too hard to cover the entire surface of the paper with pigment. QUESTION- Have you ever used a ground on paper? Like to sand the paper?
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Bless you so much! I must agree wholeheartedly about people being able to mute the video. Sometimes it’s just hard to understand how people can complain about something free, lol! And I’m including a video here of where I demonstrate how to make your own pastel surfaces in eight different ways! I often use a type of ground to apply to surfaces to make my homemade pastel papers. Check it out and also I have a video on storing my pastels in clear bags which is my temporary storage system prior to Framing or shipping. 8 WAYS to Make Your Own Pastel Papers!! / Plus... 7 Paintings! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGaUeot-bqaKl68

@@monetcafe yes, I will. I was thinking about doing some pastel ground on a canvas board. I also tend to slow sped up videos down so I can see the techniques better. I do pray we move past this period in time when everyone wants to complain all the time and argue. I’m so over people being so negative and hateful. This is by far the easiest time in history for just about everything. Being grateful will fill a life if they’d let it. Thank you for the videos.

@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
I have framed quite a few of my mini paintings as groupings, but usually they were all the same size. I think I would arrange these in an interesting composition that would create an artistic statement in itself. I like to arrange them and then cut a custom Matt to fit over them before Framing.

Thank you for speeding up the demonstrations. And thank you for sharing your thought process, approach, and techniques. I enjoy your videos. I use Neocolor 2 water soluble crayons and traditional oil pastels more often than soft pastels. I would love to get your take on those vs soft pastels. I think there is less ability to layer colors and achieve textures.
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I love using the Neocolor 2 water-soluble pastels myself. I use them often for underpaintings. And you already have a good idea of one of the advantages of soft pastels… I think the layering ability is much better and I also think the color vibrancy is more intense.

Do you ever use a fixative? If so what brand? I understand that some fixative products will alter the colors of pastels.

I only use fixative during the working process, very very seldom. You are right that fixative will alter the colors, so I never spray at the end.

Hello Susan, this is - NC girl who bought your red barn painting. Are pastels chalky? I feel like I can't imagine using chalk on paper ...chills up my spine sort of feeling. I haven't wanted to try because of that. Well, that and I have spent my children's college educations on watercolor supplies. Are some pastels crayon-like or chalky? Love your work..obviously! :) Please don't worry about chatting! I enjoy your teaching and I appreciate it very much. God bless you!
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sherry, and that’s hilarious about your children’s college education. It’s so hard to restrain ourselves with art supplies! The better brands of soft pastels are not chalky as in chalkboard chalk. They are softer and don’t have the same feel when you apply them to pastel surfaces. I wish I could just have you over to my studio and let you try it out to see if it bothers you. Chalk has a lot of binder and not much color whereas soft pastels have mostly pure color. They’re a bit more buttery in consistency. Hope that helps, but don’t go spend a fortune on soft pastels until you try some out to see if you can handle the texture. Have fun!

I am bed bound and. I want to make greeting cards for my friends. What type of pastels should I use, soft or oil. I want to do local pictures since I live in a coastal area. Any thing you can share on coastal pictures? Also do you need a fixative to set the paste ? Enjoyed your video. I do simple watercolors, but that is hard to do in bed. Thanks
@berolinastrassmann2 жыл бұрын
Hello from a fellow budding pastel artist. If you use soft pastels in bed, you will need to pay special attention to all the dust that soft pastels generate. There are fixatives for soft pastels as well. Oil pastels never really dry, so they might not be best for greeting cards. If you feel like exploring a bit, you might consider using watercolours for greeting cards. You can start with inexpensive sets and a water brush. Greeting cards are fun using watercolours. They don't produce any dust or waste and don't require.much space to use. Hope this was helpful

Thank you for a great tutorial. I started doing mini paintings because it isn't as overwhelming and don't feel like I'm ruining a 5.00 sheet of paper. Do you use a spray after you're finished to preserve your painting?
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary Testa, I agree with your thoughts on painting small!! Also, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image. To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:kzbin.info/www/bejne/aomnZYabr6useMk&t=209s
