Finally got around to doing this - I purchased a bunch of Xiaomi sensors and didn't realise my little intel NUC had such terrible bluetooth range! Two months later I have my temperature and humidity stats again 😆

@johnthomas2970 That depends on how strong is your Esp32, you can probably get away with a PIR and Bluetooth proxy, but I wouldn’t use a mmWave sensor with a Bluetooth proxy for example.

Great video - for some reason I just can't get the esp32 to connect to wifi. I tried different 2.4Ghz networks and moved the devices to different locations for better signal. No luck! At this point I'm wondering if this is a hardware issue.. please help!!

Hi, after i have linked it to my Home assistant on my computer, can i take the ESP32 device and plug into a power source instead of my computer? I managed to make it work with my home assistant however, when i unplug it and place it somewhere else, it says "This entity is no longer being provided by the esphome integration. If the entity is no longer in use, delete it in settings.". Any advice please?

No need, it would work even without installing ESPHome, You just need to get the IP address of your bluetooth proxy.

Is it possible to integrate them without it? then I installed tuya BLE, but I can't call it as it gives me this error "Failed to load the configuration flow: 500 Internal Server Error Server got itself in trouble" now I'm trying to solve it but I've been looking for a solution for many hours but nothing 😭 if you have any solution I would be grateful 🙏

@@salta199 From what I read the Tuya gateway isn't mandatory, you should try the HA forum as I'm not using Tuya in my setup.

1) It can work for both scenario, For the latter you just need to connect the bluetooth proxy via USB to your HA Green, and it works like a charm. 2) For Home Assistant Green, yes.

@@SimplySmartHouse no, I'm not sure how to do that. But I'm pretty sure that my USB port on my Microsoft surface pro isn't registered as a serial port or something to that effect. It doesn't seem to recognize devices. All it does is charge them. Yeah

What Esp32 board are you using? I would try a different cable, it sounds like you are not using a data cable.

I just checked, Yes! You just need to connect the bluetooth proxy via USB to your HA Green, and it works like a charm.

What is the difference using this method, and then using the ESPHome Addon in homeassistant and flashing through that GUI? As a "newcomer" it's a bit confusing. Seems like it's not possible to install a bluetooth proxy via the ESPHome addon.

I agree, it is very confusing. I only tried installing it using the method showed in the video, i believe you are right and i'm not sure if it's possible to install a bluetooth proxy via the ESPHome addon.

Hola, yes it's possible to have and ESP32 running a mmWave sensor and also a bluetooth proxy for example. It's all in the configuration.

That’s a good question, honestly I’m not 100% sure, I guess for passive Bluetooth devices (like the Xiaomi thermometer) it would just broadcast to the closest Bluetooth repeater, as for active Bluetooth devices I didn’t found any documentation, I would suggest you to try and connect one of those active Bluetooth devices to check if the rssi has improved. You can also check the logs of the Bluetooth proxy to see what devices broadcast to it.

The proxy talks to Home Assistant via wifi using the network (router) So it should work fine on HA Green if connected directly to it.

You should press the boot button just before hitting the install button. Hold it for a few seconds (5-10) until it starts installing. If that doesn’t help, try switching to a different cable. It has to be a data cable in order for this to work.

It keeps failing, even though I'm holding the boot button on the esp. I have the exact same one as you in the video. The chip says ESP-WROOM-32 On the back it says ESP32 DEVKITV1

Try holding the boot button before you hit the "install" button. That might help.

Somehow my computer tells me that my esp32 or esp8266 can't connect to the com port. I've tried different cables and drivers. The settings are good too. How can I solve this?

Are you using Chrome? If you installed all drivers, maybe try a different COM port, I would also try holding the “reset” button on your ESP32 before you try to connect.

Or, you use BLE device that needs some additional support. Tuya / SmartLife devices will probably not work because they need additional authentication with Tuya cloud. I have two such devices and they're useless if you want to use them for anything else than Tuya cloud apps.
