It makes me sad to see such open people back than and comparing it to what it is like nowadays. Everyone was able to have his/ her own opinion. Now everyone must have the same or no opinion. That´s ultimatively damaging any society on the long run.

Ahaha, those are "tone numbers". Cantonese has 6 tones (well, technically, 9 tones, but tones 7, 8, and 9 are just shorter versions of tones 1, 3, and 6). So the number after the word is just telling you what tone the word is pronounced with.

Oh, Hello! I'd love to learn Cantonese... But it's so hard AAAAAAAAA!! The jyutping makes the learning looks impossible, every number is a tone and for foreigners like me, I try to remember the tone for each word but I end up forgetting all the time... I think simply listening to more cantonese (with subtitles) will help! they can be from tutorials or any videos from hong kong youtubers/sources. it will also help if you know mandarin or chinese, tho mandarin isn't very similar to cantonese at all. tones 3 and 5 are also quite similar, 5 gives a suppressed feeling of a lower pitch compared to 3, good luck and 加油 :)

The translation seems a bit spotty. At 1:23 the Cantonese subtitles and jyutpin states "But I haven't been living here for long." Which is quite a difference from "~ for quite a while" in the English subtitles. PLEASE, correct me if I'm wrong!
@rina22fm
@rina22fm 7 жыл бұрын
After reading this comment I repeated a few times to see what he was saying and the translations is correct. The Cantonese sub-title used 喺which means 'at', the meaning of the full sentence is the same as the translation so I don't repeat here. But thanks for pointing out, it is a bit tricky.
@wackywong
@wackywong 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes! I see it now! The 好耐 functions as an adverb quantifying the preceding clause. Thus it should be read as "(唔喺香港住)好耐": "(don't live at Hong Kong)very long/for a long time". Which then begs the question how to say "haven't been living here for long"? Would that be "唔係住緊香港好耐"? Or "唔喺香港住緊好耐"? Sorry for all these questions, I'm just trying to get a grip on the Cantonese grammar!
@rina22fm
@rina22fm 7 жыл бұрын
+wackywong you pick it up fast :) so are you learning Cantonese? Yes, his words can be interpreted as 'he no longer lives in Hong Kong'. And for your question, the latter sounds better, but instead of '住緊',simply use '住', the former is like present continuous tense, the latter is present tense, you only need that, otherwise it sounds strange :)
@rina22fm
@rina22fm 7 жыл бұрын
+wackywong if you want to ask how long someone hasn't living here, then you only need to change one word, making it '唔喺香港住幾耐?'
@wackywong
@wackywong 7 жыл бұрын
+Shao Zhong Li But wait, if the phrase "haven't been living here for long" can be written as 唔喺香港住好耐 _and_ 唔喺香港住好耐 is also understood as "haven't been living in Hong Kong for quite a while" then something is awry here as the English sentences are not the same. Combining every available information I have I would then surmise that the proper translation for "haven't been living here for long" would be 唔住喺香港好耐, which turns 住喺香港好耐 (to live in Hong Kong for a long time) into a clause that can be negated by 唔. Thus, 唔(住喺香港好耐) means "not true that(I live in Hong Kong for long)", i.e. "I have not been living here for long" or "I have been living in Hong Kong for a short while". 啱唔啱呀? Yes, I'm learning Cantonese but as you can see I get confused easily. That's why I'm glad videos like these exist!

+Calif Chong Thanks for doing the translation/subtitles and changing it next time. I think the reason of the need to change it is because 下馬itself already has its own meaning, to prevent confusion, when the phrase serve as kind of a 語氣助詞, it's better to use 語氣詞-words without meanings--嘛。And 下 sounds closer to what was said so it was a nice choice.

Haha, finally someone raised this question, I will try to explain. I am a native Cantonese speaker(from Hong Kong), the numbers indicate the tone of pronouncing them, because with the same 'spelling' there can be nine tones to say it to mean really different words. Yet, it looks really complicated, though that's official way of the pronunciations, locals only knows these compositions, if they, for example, study Chinese as their Bachelor degree, instead we learn the language word by word, so we learn words, then sentences and paragraphs, memorise each word by how they looks, sound and mean. That's actually the easiest way to learn it. Interestingly we do learn Mandarin by 'pinyin'. I would not say it's easy to learn Mandarin either. I welcome questions if there's any :) And if I missed out any comments that had already explain these, I am sorry for that :)

+hkfunla hi, I hope you don't mind that I looked up your profile to see how should I reply. I can see that you are learning Cantonese? A simple answer to this is, there were 6 tone numbers (調值)but 9 tones(聲), 3 of the tones were group under 1, 3 and 6 respectively, with only 6 numbers, it looks like there were only 6 tones but no. I shall explain this in the following. As I said I am just a native speaker not an expert(academically)in this field, to prevent misunderstandings and misleadings, I investiagted and asked my friend who studied Chinese as her bachelor(and Cantonese linguistics as electives) on this specific question and I will try to explain that in English. Yet,there is the possibility of lost in translation,I am just trying my best to make it understanderble. There is the saying of 九聲六調(聲for tones and 調for tone numbers),meaning 9 tones and 6 tones numbers,(literally,9 sounds and 6 pitch),tone numbers are like pitches or scale in music. Tbc in next comment.

+hkfunla In 'a Cantonese phonetic reader' (1912)Daniel Jones used the methaphor of staff notation to explain the principle of 9 tones 6 pitches. It seems this can be a good reference book. The 9 tones are 陰平、陰上、陰去、陽平、陽上、陽去、陽入、中入、陰入。To understand these,陰means high pitch(literally means negative),陽means low pitch(literally, positive),平、上、去、入are the ways of pronouncing, so combine these two are the names of the tones. While 陰平、陰上、陰去、陽平、陽上、陽去(the first 6)are noted as 1-6 respectively,the last 3 陽入、中入、陰入are indicated as 1,3,6 because of their pitches(there is also another way to note them, as 7,8,9, but not here)they are different from the first 6 because words ending with t、p、k are considered as 入聲。And they sound very different from the first 6 while the first 6 would sound similar to each other. These sounds like two groups of words. My friend said it's like the difference between jan and jat(with her example that I will show)Tbc with sites with examples.

+hkfunla my sources: www.chiculture.net/0604/html/c27/0604c27.html www.ilc.cuhk.edu.hk/Chinese/pthprog1/ch_j5_5character_sod.html hklinguists.wordpress.com/2010/08/02/%E7%B2%B5%E8%AA%9E%E4%B9%9D%E8%81%B2%E5%85%AD%E8%AA%BF/ From my friend: 如果計高低音調分六音:陰、陽(平、上、去),但t、p、k尾音的字計作入聲,分陽入、中入、陰入 那我先覆你六音 就是你想像那些陰陽平上去是五線譜的音階 例 因 陰平 一 (t尾)陰入 忍 上 印 去 人 陽平 引 上 孕 去 日(t尾)陽入 「日」音階上係第六音,t收尾作陽入聲,呢個例既中入聲有音無字 Unfortunately these are all in Chinese/Cantonese,I have tried to translated the main points though. I also welcome others to translate them since mine may not be the best.

Maybe it's because of the pronounciation.. The harsh way mandarin speakers talk is kinda annoying... for me the worst is Beijing dialect, always saying 儿 at end of words (︶︿︶)
