We wrap tread to riser. Just cut 3 strips as wide as the steps smallest step wall to wall one 6 footer will do 5 steps and trim and staple as you go its faster and looks neater when the carpet is installed. Then row find the carpet to a good balance point and i like using the stretcher for stairs

Quick question. Would you still use underlay if you only intend to carpet the treads, and not the risers? Staple under the bullnose? Thanks
@FloorsbySouthernboys7 жыл бұрын
yeah your carpet will last alot longer and feel better to walk on

I usually, Keep one of the older pad off the step that fits good to template. I keep pad steps in one piece rather cut up. billion different ways to do padding lol

the best thing to do is cut it 1/4 short on the side and cut a long pieces of pad like 15 feet and roll it up like carpet it and roll it down the steps once you cut the back you have a clean cut to flip it on the next step you stretch the side where it was 1/4 short that way your only making one cut vs many other cuts

So what do you do with rest of the pad? A typical 13 step 36 wide flight of stairs only needs a 63 inch piece of pad to do the whole flight done the way shown in the video. Even if you pad the nose and tread you only need a 90" piece for said steps. Even if its wide 40" steps 15ft of pad is waaayyy too much and with some padding being around $300 a roll you would be fired real fast. It doesnt take 10 yards to do any normal residential stairs even with 15 40" steps and a 6' landing I wouldn't use that much
@micknorton57445 жыл бұрын
any reason you dont wrap pad around the nose?
@micknorton57445 жыл бұрын
specifically just the front of the bull nose
@FloorsbySouthernboys5 жыл бұрын
Mick Norton no sir, i just let the pad go over the edge a little bit so you don’t feel the wood, really no difference

Fast!!? Didn't know you had to take a maths test and do 50 cuts..... Fit the underlay gripper to gripper. that's how we do over the pond in the uk that's quicker.
@FloorsbySouthernboys7 жыл бұрын
sausage man it's a good thing this wasn't a math test because I would have surely failed did you notice when I was counting by nines I messed up LOL
@Dave-xr4iz7 жыл бұрын
FloorsbySouthernboys haha, I just cut the width of the stairs off the length of the underlay and that's it normally I'll get about 4 stairs out of that. plus I never gripper the sides of stairs
@FloorsbySouthernboys7 жыл бұрын
sausage man i hear you, i like to tack strip the sides so i can stretch the steps side to side as well up and down i have seen more steps with wrinkles going vertical than horizontal ,stretching side to side prevents that
@Dave-xr4iz7 жыл бұрын
FloorsbySouthernboys oh right, if I start fitting stairs and they don't sit flat on the tread i just spray the underlay and the back of the carpet that normally sorts the problem out for me. Do you power stretch your rooms?
@FloorsbySouthernboys7 жыл бұрын
sausage man yes sir and any closet big enough to fit my stretchers in I only use my Kicker when I have to I've been doing this over 25 years and I like to work the easy way Floor Covering is hard on your body long term so I always use my stretchers

Good video, but I prefer to do the first cut a little bit short (1/8 of an inch) and then staple one side of the stairs and stretch the rest of it over then staple down the front. I find its the fastest way for me at least because you have one less cut that way and it saves even more time and it saves materials too.

My way is faster. cut to the inside of the tackstrip and leave the piece whole. cut as you go. no need to cut all those pieces
