I save the old odd shaped steps and use them for a templates I just cut them a little bigger.

I always put the pad/underlay over the nose. Way I was taught, especially with sharp edges like that, it would cut in and wear faster. Would have liked to see the band you put in also, though simple, on a 3 face one, I would have shown burying the staples in the angles. But nice vid.

What do you do when your installing stairs when the stair bow out?? Like when the stair measures like say 39 and there sixteenths at the back of the stair by the riser and 39 and 3/4 at the front of the tread where you wrap the carpet under the lip?? So what I'm saying is the stair tread has two different measurements??

I'll make a video when I do it. I charge more to do them since they take longer. I really like your tip on doing the step first and doing the riser separate. Especially with stiff carpet that will save a lot of time.

Is that a new knife I see you using? Nice video once again, you do your bull-nose like me I trim the excess off the nose of the step after I've tacked it down. a lot of UK fitters will trim the carpet first then tack the carpet under the nose I find you can end up cutting the carpet short. I'm glad I saw you put a fill piece on the nose where there was gap because if that was me I wouldn't be happy I would of felt like I did that part wrong so I'm glad that's OK to do that.

sausage man Yeah my knife has a real thin rubbery Layer on it so it feels good in the hand, and yeah there is no way around putting I feel peace on the bull nose when you have an inside corner like that

Not going to have a piece out on left side only on concave not convex!! Before staple guns we did that step Waterfall!! You had to sew a pie piece in an on the convex point cut right on the point of convex an sew it together!! The pie piece you cut out you can trim up an sew wear pie piece is missing!! If you had just little pucker we'd sprinkle hot water on backing an scrink the fullness out!!! The backing were berlap back in the day an would scrink!!

Why not just install tread and riser seperate ? And just have the dutchman (triangle piece on wrap).Ultiamately cap and band.Great job anyways,thanks for vid.Get rid of that electric tacker,and get a air set up.The guns r much smaller and faster.Im sure u know this.Cheers mate!

I know this is an older video but I don't see the stairs being stretched in width. Stairs take a lot of abuse. Whenever I do stairs, instead of using rebonded foam, no matter the density, I try to push for a 40 oz synthetic fiber pad which is much less likely to cause wrinkles over time, because the pad doesn't flex like foam pad. I'm fortunate that I bill by the hour and speed is not of essence. I've seen a handful of videos and the staplers always sound like machine guns in the videos. 🤨 I refuse wrinkle repairs on some stairways that have wrinkles because the stairway was stapled every1/2 inch and there's no way to pull up the stair to stretch the carpet. I have a love-hate relationship with staplers. They have their place as do tacks hammered in by hand. That said, absolutelyI love watching your videos especially the newer stuff. I've seen your message and procedures change over time. My procedure may change every time I see someone else work. I learned something new everyday even after 45 years of doing this work. I don't ever plan to stop learning. Though I've been doing this since before 1975, I still learn by watching other people. Thank you for stepping up and helping with installation community with your videos. There's way too little information available to the average installer and you are one of the very few people filling in the void with your installation experiences. 👍 I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer with my above comments. I just think that emphasis on speed is a very negative influence to this trade. Mainly for the people who are newly introduced to cut two carpet installation and don't have the ability to do speed AND quality. Someone learning this trade and watching a machine gun stapler is not helping him. It's teaching him that you're supposed to attempt to keep up with the professionals. I've done a few open stair wraps over the years and I'm talking complete wraps around a pole or are circular staircase centered on tree trunks. Every step is a different shape and each one must be patterned. 12 steps comes to $1,600 including travel time. Don't be scared to spend additional time on stairs and build a customer base by doing the work. Traditionally, stairs are not gravy money. When I bid a carpet job I figure yardage throughout the entire job. Hallways can consume a considerable amount of time, especially if they have three or four doorways plus a closet, plus a bathroom door, plus one or two additional seams. I don't hesitate to add an additional $125 bucks for a hallway. I also don't hesitate to add another $100 to a set of stairs. This trade is built on speed. I can't do speed...... so rely on my repeat customers and people they send my way. Find your special abilities and charge what it's worth. Tho I charge more, many customers reply: "that's all, I was expecting more" 🤧🤧🤧 All of what I said about does not work in large towns in the only option is home Depot or other box stores that compete for low buck. One way to make money in this trade is to do marathons and at work everybody else and beat your body to death. If you're able to do that then congratulations. After treating your body like that for 40 years how is your health? How is your back and how are your knees? Slow down, focus on quality, in your customer base at those that don't care what it costs if you can find those kind of people...... ..... Because those kind of people also know other people on their same level. Those recommendations will eventually make those type of people you're only customers. They want it done correctly they wanted to look nice and money is not their first concern. Work hard and find those kind of people. Trust me, you will be happy when you're 64 and put in four and a half hours per day. ...and you haven't had your knees replaced or have had back surgery. 😉 Sorry to make such a lengthy speech but I think it's important. If you work fast and work hard and beat your body to death, then have plans to open up a shop so that you can sell rather than install in your later years. Don't end up a crippled installer from years of self abuse. This is not an easy trade.

2nd generation installer 35 years old. Done it since I was old enough to pick up scraps full time straight out of high school. Dad's done it for 45 years and still at it. How are you going to staple pad to a rounded bull nose on a french wrap. Run it below it? Then shoot staples into the face? Running pad below is like a waterfall carpet it's just going to break down,bind pucker and cause problems foot pressure will loosen it life a waterfalled carpet overtime plus it looks overly bulky and causes problems when stretching to riser. No point in running pad over on a bull nose. I make new helpers watch fbsb videos so they don't come in completely blind,amazing what a difference it makes. I don't have time to write negative comments about fbsb if he does something a lil different then I do. Fbsb is the real deal and I appreciate his videos, peace.
