Oh SNAP I LOVE THAT IDEA!!! I was going to make one for each of my children on their 21st birthday from the year they were born! I live in TX so it's going to have a LOT of hot color on it. But this would be a way to make it not mostly orange red and yellow!

I used my scraps up before and donated to my oncologist's office for people's to use while they are getting chemo. I called it my colors of life blanket. ❤️ I love how you mixed the light and dark colors together!!! I think it's time to make another to donate with your pattern. Thank you for the idea. 💜❤️🌸

Kimmy P That's so nice of you! I have cancer & the hospital I was at for treatment was fortunate enough to have people do this ongoing so we were each given one to keep. People donated yarn & the hospital had a couple of skeins with knitting needles in several baskets. They put those baskets throughout the oncology floor. Anyone there could knit a square or 2 or whatever they had time for. They'd leave the squares in the baskets. Volunteers would then put the squares together to make the blankets. It was such a nice idea, you knew alot of people contributed to make your blanket. It really meant alot to us.

Just a heads up re doing that... I thought it sounded like a great idea when I first heard someone mention it, but later read that it's actually not good at all. Both the adults and the baby birds can get claws, feet, whatever, caught in the yarn fibres and not be able to free themselves.
@gingersmith6024

Also unless the colors are neutrals, it is a bad idea, it draws predators to the nests.

yes, I use it for everything, thin and thick yarn. As you say, the knot tucks in nicely and stays hidden. Even used it on lacy patterns with quite fine yarn but you really have to pull the knot really tight and small there.

Love this pattern. I started doing my "magic knot" scraps with black yarn, doing a solid granny square. I like this HDC better. I just make pet blankets for the local humane shelter....cats & dogs don't care what color their blankets are. I have also used white with my pastel scraps. I' m going to look for the yarn needle that you used...so much better than the ones I'm currently using, but they are probably 20 years old. I had a whole basket of scraps, that I swear, were having a party...they were a mess...so one cold Iowa Winter day, I "magic knotted" all my scraps into one large ball.

I made one using 2 strands and it created some beautiful combinations and it’s heavy. With some of these other videos on how to make a scrap blanket, you seem to have to use your good full skein yarn to give it consistency like making every row a solid shade for the whole row. Seems to create more scraps 😂😂

Love it!! I do this too. I always say "warmth doesn't know colour", so use up those scraps! These are my most wanted blankets!! Thanks for the knot tip, too!! Happy New Year! (2019)

I love the look of that. I’m doing one right now, double stranding, using the waffle stitch. But I’ve run out of scraps 2/3 way through! I need to complete more projects.

I love the way you try to hold everything. Also, I'm new and just started crocheting in February...so I haven't got much left over to make a blanket.

Me too. I want to make one of these even if I don’t have many scraps. But it comes out to be a thick blanket. Think I’ll make one anyway using my yarn randomly. Great instruction on doing the straight edge and the magic knot. No tails to weave in or only a few.

When you make the magic join I save the cut off tiny pieces in a baggie and use them to stuff amigarumi for babies so I keep it all natural (instead of buying stuffing).

35 years ago, my Mom did this but she used what she called a "fabric stitch" which is 1 sc, 1 dbl, 1 sc, all across the row. In the next row, you make 1 double crochet on top of the sc from the previous row, then 1 sc on the double from the previous row. This makes for a nice, tight weave. But my Dad complained it was too heavy on top of him, lol, so then they used it underneath them, like a mattress pad, and it kept them so warm. ♡
