Update! At 2:45 I said to use 1 1/4" long nails into the wall studs, but it should be 2" nails into the studs!

How do you know where the studs are and what if they don't correspond with where you want your vertical boards situated?
@drock5288
@drock5288 3 ай бұрын
You can put the top and bottom board into the stud. The vertical boards should be fine with just the glue and Brad nails. You can use a magnet to find the studs. The magnet will stick to the drywall screws that are hidden underneath the paint. Then just go up or down since the studs will be vertical. If you have good hearing you can knock on the wall and find the studs too. The knock will sound more solid or muted when knocking over the stud. If there’s no stud it will sound hollow

Great work on the accent wall!! One other thing you can do to help with the gaps so you don’t have to caulk as much is to hold the vertical pieces on the baseboard and make a mark where it meets the top board and that should give you a very tight fit.

How did you plan around the outlets in the wall or was that just a lucky accident?
@ashokbhusal9176
@ashokbhusal9176 5 ай бұрын
What I would do is use her math and see if the outlets falls inside the openings. If they don’t, I would reduce or increase the number of boards and do the calculations again to see if they fit within the openings. Using paint tape for mock up will be very helpful to visualize before cutting boards.

This looks great, and the video is generally well done, but I do have to criticize one element. The trim you used is 1x4, which actually measures 3/4” thick. The drywall is 1/2” by code, so if you are using 1-1/4” nails, you are not hitting the studs at all. I know you used the glue on the verticals, but you also attached them with 1-1/4” nails. Anyplace you could hit a stud 2” nails would have been the better choice.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't see the use of brad nailing into the drywall alone, but I think that's what they did to accommodate their spacing?

I am very new to this and getting ready to tackle my wall. I was told to use a 1 1/2 brad nail soI did not go too far past the drywall in case there are pipes or electrical. Should I just stick to a 2" brad and identify as many studs as possible? Thanks
@clickster1883
@clickster1883 11 ай бұрын
For the baseboard trim, there shouldn’t be any plumbing or electrical that low, so 2” brads would be appropriate to secure the trim through the drywall into the bottom plate. For the upper horizontal piece, that should also be secured using 2” brads going into the studs spaced at 16” on center. The vertical pieces, however, are not necessarily aligned w the vertical studs, so 1 1/4” brads would be appropriate for the reason you mentioned. That said, when shooting those in, you can angle them up or down for a little extra hold, tho really those pieces will be secured in place by the adhesive once it cures.

If your wall is textured, do you need to cover the wall with something flat like a flat board before you do your board and batten or would it look OK to just put it over the top of your now textured wall?
@AngelaMarieMade
@AngelaMarieMade 6 ай бұрын
Put a couple boards in place to see how you would like the look of the textured wall with board & batten.s Leaving the texture finish would be the easiest and less time consuming but if you do not like the look then some 1/4" plywood could be used. Great question, thank you!

How lucky was it that the vertical boards didn’t fall where receptacles were? Or did you factor that into your math measurements? I’m about to do the same and the light switch and receptacle fall oddly due to it being an old house

I would recommend using a pocket hole jig to install this. Cut and assemble the board and batten on the floor, and then attach to the wall. Seams will be perfect and will have a much more finished look. Pocket hole jigs are very simple to use. You should also put the baseboard back at the bottom to complete the look.

No, we used liquid nails and a brad nailer to secure them to the drywall. You do want to try and take into consideration where the outlets are so that you do not block those.

Is removing the original baseboard a must? Or do you think this could be done on an existing baseboard?
@AngelaMarieMade
@AngelaMarieMade 2 жыл бұрын
We removed and replaced the existing baseboard (which was less than 1/4″ thick at the top) so that the battens (vertical boards) would line up perfectly and not have any weird overhang. If you have baseboards like us that are thinner than the molding being used, you can technically cut the battens with a mitered angle at the bottom if you don’t want to remove the original baseboard. But, it doesn’t look as nice or professional in my opinion as baseboards that are the same thickness as the vertical batten boards. That’s why we replaced our baseboard with the same style boards as the rest of the board and batten pieces.

The wall looks amazing thank you for this tutorial. Question in regards to dimensions of the 1x4 you mentioned the actual width is actually 3.5 inches? Is it because you got the wrong one or is that how 1x4 boards are? I’m a newbie and doing my calculations for a 178 inch in length wall .

@AngelaMarieMade

Thanks so much! My walls were not textured, but depending on the material of the wall if it is stucco or plaster you may not be able to easily put brad nails in so I would recommend using an extra strength adhesive that works with masonry or plaster.

Looks great! I always see people using adhesive on the back. Is this really necessary? We have lived in our house for over 30 years now and all of the projects we did we never used adhesives. Will removing this (down the road) cause damage to the walls? I haven't used it so this is why I am asking...
@AngelaMarieMade
@AngelaMarieMade 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can get away with doing it without adhesive mostly because the boards are not supporting anything but it is a good practice to use to ensure they will not come off the wall. Removing the boards with adhesive will cause minimal damage to drywall and can be time consuming to remove because you need to sand and scrape the residue off of the drywall and will require some light drywall repair in most cases.

@AngelaMarieMade

I have experienced this happening. First, a good pair of pliers to pull out the nails and a nail setter for popping the nails in if they are just sticking out a little bit are great tools to have on hand. You should be able to still drive the nails at an angle thats not straight 90, it takes some practice. There is also an adjustment on the nailer that you can turn to make the nails go in deeper that would help as well.

The materials list links to the radius edge MDF but in this video it looks like you were using square edges. If you did use the radius edges how did you deal with the joints between your horizontal and vertical battens since the horizontals would be rounded?

We used square edges, I think the picture that Lowe's is using looks like they are radius edged but in the description it says they are square on all 4 sides. If you did have radius edges you could probably use a spackle between the horizontal and vertical boards.

I am in the process of doing a Board and Batten project for a customer. As a handyman, I know that studs do not always fall 16" on center as they normally do. As you move across the walls often the last or first or studs near outlets and door openings will not line up as desired for equally spacing the verticle boards. It seems to me that using a liquid nail adhesive is required to hold the boards in place Angle nailing with a brad or finish nail gun will help to hold the boards in place while needing a lot of spackle and sanding. I think that using adhesive and a few nails might be best. Has anyone who has done this have any suggestions from experience?
@AngelaMarieMade

Yes, one of the main challenges is not having the correct spacing but it is easily remedied with using liquid nails and a few nails.

the width of the 1x4's is 3.5" and 3/4" thick and the 1x2's are 1.5" wide and 3/4" thick. I have the full cut list on my blog here: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/

Why no 1/4" plywood on drywall?

The wall was in pretty good shape so I didn't think it was necessary. Thank you for the question!

We chose this paint based on your video. When we begin to paint, the paint appeared beige. Did this happen to you guys as well?

The Mindful Gray (Sherwin Williams) paint color was a bit lighter during the painting process but it dried darker and mostly gray like the photo/video shows. Did your paint end up drying darker as well?

This looks great ! So for this you needed (2) 1x4 and (1) 1x2?
@Jessica-pr2nr

So all together you needed about 34ft of 1X4 ? Forgive me I’m a super newbie to diy :)

Thank you! Yes you do need both 1x4 and 1x2 boards but the quantity you need depends on the length of the wall. I have a more detailed material list and how to on my blog at: angelamariemade.com/diy-board-and-batten-wall/

Beautiful. But y’all only used battens. Because there’s no board behind the batten. Battens were used to hide the gaps between board planks.

No please place actual board on the wall like a sheet of plywood so you actually have a wood look wall and not have the structure of the wall above between the battens on the bottom.. it just looks incomplete

Wouldn’t it be easier & cheaper to get it CNC machined in angles or two pieces and spray adhesive it on. They could machine off opposite of mounding if change mind when sold often. 10 minutes, no waste or less. American construction is absurdly wasteful, they make it from eps foam composite mesh pain or fiberglass resin. Even rubbish not new trees, maybe that’s made of trash wood shavings but can absorb moisture? Cool diy, old ways are wasteful at least STEM biochemistry is changing!

The glue is so unnecessary, nails only. The next owner is going to have to replace to drywall after prying that off. You're creating much unnecessary extra work for yourself or others in the future.

I disagree, it would not be that much drywall work on 7 - 1x3's, minimal work really. I personally don't plan on taking it off either. And I definitely don't trust my kids from prying one off the wall and running around with a nail sticking out of a board because I didn't want to put adhesive on and create soooo much extra work for the next owner😂😂😂
