Easy DIY calcium supplement for my snails and shrimp!

If you add cuttlebone (found at Walmart and all Pet Stores) to your tank, the snails will graze on it and it'll disolve pure calcium in your tank....will not mess with tank parameters. I've been using this for years and my Rabbit Snails and Hercules Snails have awesome shells! Will not bother any other resident in the aquarium. Cuttlebone is literally the skeleton of the cuttlebone fish. It's mainly used for birds, attached to their cages so they can nibble on them....this is what keeps the bird beak strong, also.

Also, if you have reptiles that are dependent on calcium you can add the calcium dust that they eat. Been working for me for years and it lasts forever.

Yes you add calcium carbonate powder, I made some snello recently, put spirulina ,puréed green beans which snails love.

Cool a tiny bit of crushed eggshell looks like the move for my tripps and daphnia tanks. The triops will probably be happy wity them they eat dirt off the floor as a way of life. Cuttlebone will probably be the move for the tank i move the adults into.

Hi, can I ask if it's okay to put 5 nerites snails in a 3 gallon tank? And putting egg shells on the tank will not harm other fishes? I heard putting egg shells on tanks will have higher calcium on the water might harm the fish? I have Betta and 5 nerites snails in a 3 gallon tank. It it too many for 5 snails in a 3 gallon? There other decorations in my tank a drift wood, rocks and fake plants. Will it be enough for them live in it?

hey! I think you would need to put ALOT of egg shells for it to harm your fish. just put a little bit (make sure they are nice and clean) and you should be fine. At the time of this video I had alot of fish with these snails and they didn't seem to be affected at all. And yes, 5 nerite snails in 3 gallons isn't bad, i wouldn't add more though, as they will be competing for algae lol

I bake mine in the oven on 200 for 30 minutes they’re just chuck them in a carbon bag I actually put them in with my carbon and chuck it in the filter and it seems to keep all the snails and shrimp happy so I’m guessing 100% guessing they take it from the water column my snails are happy the ships are happy and they get nice clean sheds I do make my own jelly food which I had a little bit of it to as well crush it up and sprinkle it in and everyone seems to be doing well

Thank you. I'll try this egg shell for calcium. Just added 2 nerite snails in my aquarium. Your fish will definitely like it too coz fish need lots of calcium and fish is in itself a good source of calcium for humans

I think it’s helpful, having it is better than having none, especially if your snails are showing calcium deficiency.

Egg shells carry bacteria ..they need to go into the Oven to get dried ( low heat) then Blitz in your processor etc.. this is how you do it before you use egg shells in soil for plant pots too ( kill the nasties first )

Agree! I take the membrane off and once I have collected enough then I put them on a tray crushed as much as u can then in the oven for 150 degrees for 15 min, then out to crush more. Back in the over for another 15min. Then I put them in a spice blender and turns it into a powder. I do this for dogs as its amazing for their bones and health! So I can out a teaspoon of that in my tank.

Not that good. They ended up being too skittish for my tank and some of them ended up getting stuck behind my sponge trying to hide. I'm down to three embers as of right now and I don't plan on adding in any more. I'm making an update video on all of my projects soon and it will cover what happened to my embers. To be honest, they did way better in my Bichir tank and moss sump tank. my aquascape didnt have enough places for them to hide 😅

Mine were really shy too. But I got 6 guppy for my 20 and the embers came right on out. It's a safety thing for them because they are so tiny. Large numbers of any tetra's may make a difference too. But they won't do well in a really bare tank.

I pulverized egg shells too. I read somewhere that you must dry egg shells first, pull the membranes, and then grind them in a coffee grinder. Make sure your eggshells are DRY before you grind them. I tell ya, worked great. Now, my concern is “how much powder to add per gallon of water in your tank.” I have a 90gallon tank... So how much would you say?? Nice! Yea I think drying the shells is the easiest, especially when we take out the membranes. Someone in the comments mentioned they didn’t clean the shell and it made their tank stink, so I guess it’s good that we dried it prior to adding it in our aquariums. As for the amount to add to your 90 gallon, I have no idea. I imagine you would need to add a lot…? But I’m wondering if you add too much if it would contribute to nitrates… so yea I’m not sure about the ratios.

I have an assassin snail and a mystery snail. I got them from petco. I’ve been told they are bottom feeders, eat in my bettas wastes and Left over food but Im seeing that’s not a good diet for them most of the time. I bought dem Crab cuisine Pellets. Apparently assassin snails like dem and it’s rich in Calcium and stuff. I don’t want my snails to Die or have broken shells I’m gonna see I can feed dem Egg shells now but idk

That I’m not sure. I find it easier to just add egg shells since there’s no additives in it. Human calcium supplements may contain other stuff in it? With that I have no experience with so I can’t recommend if it’s good or not for your aquarium.

Did powder egg shells. The very next day my betta died. I may have become constipated(swim bladder). He began swimming erratically, floating to the bottom, rushing to the top for air and just died. Be careful I now put sterilized oyster shells and shells i collect directly from the beach in each aquarium.

That's what I was worried about at first too, which was why I slowly added in more and more over time. Also I think thoroughly cleaning and drying out the shells first may help. My snails didn't eat all of the shells in my tank and they've been in for a while now. No smell at all. If I was you I'd probably do a big waterchange 😆

Did you rinse and boil or bake them to clean them? When dried egg shell gets wet it might smell like burnt hair but it shouldn't smell like sulfur.
