Rather than use plastic to infill the space I like to use firewood, branches or the like to continue to feed the plants, that Hugel Kulture ideal. My planters never have been mobile so weight would b an issue and you do have to top the soil up as it rots down. Love my front garden needs something for height so this I think is the ticket. Thanks.

I like the bucket idea. You can also use logs instead of pool noodles.
@agent572 жыл бұрын
You could drill holes in the bucket or use a big terracotta pot in its place to make it a big self-watering planter. I was also thinking how this setup would be good for growing potatoes. Add new layers over time.

Empty pop bottles (or milk, whatever) are very handy for filling in space in planters. Before anyone says they are plastic....Well, they are, but one has already consumed their previous contents by the time they are ready to bury!

Going to try this with a thicker base and no bucket. I'm in a rental so all of my non-annual plants like fruit trees and berry bushes are in large plastic pots. They work, but don't have the best visual appeal. This design world work great for them. Put the pot in the center and then plant annuals in the pockets on the sides. And easy to take it apart again if I have to.

Very nice!! Just a thought, you could use your bucket for compost drill holes in it and a big one on the top to put your compost in and add some worms to come in and out
@WreckDiver992 жыл бұрын
OK...THIS is cool April. Why? Because I have a quite a bit of re-claimed cedar from my deck. I refuse to throw away those cedar boards and instead, when I replace a board that has rot I cut the rot out, plane the boards down (yes, it's hard on the planer knives), join one edge, rip the other, and bam...reclaimed lumber for projects, and I think this one is high on the list. Just need to find a place for this to go. I think I'll stick with my regular composter. Yes, it takes a year, but I get about 100lbs of compost per year out of my bin, and I actually have more than I can use...Speaking of which, it's time to drop and screen mine.

This came out really well. A slightly larger version would be great without the bottom and placed directly on the ground. I'm curious however why two sides of the bottom section were left open. Won't the dirt flow out over time as the planter is watered?

If you had flipped that bucket right side up and put plastic bottles in it with holes in the top and bottom, and then filled it with dirt, that section of your planter would have a self wicking feature. A little imagination and the whole planter could be self wicking. Self wicking planters allow you to water the plants less often saving you time.

For the space filler, another great option is hugelkultur (translates to 'hill culture'). Use cut logs, branches and twigs to fill up the bulk of the space, then add your soil and compost and toss in some worms. The slow decay of the wood bits will provide gradual release of nutrients over time for the plants.

Oh, I'm so gonna try it with pallet slats I have laying around! If you allow me, one thing I'd change is just wrapping up the foam with twine instead of glueing them if using for herbs. If it was for unedible flowers I wouldn't mind but I'm concerned about the chemicals here. I don't know this brand, is it "food" or "eco" grade? Thanks for the project, loved it!

Bottom sides are open... Is soil falling out?...
@camdenbruner72092 жыл бұрын
Why is there a gap on two sides at the very bottom level?!? Seems like if you ever gave the planter a good soaking water the soil would come right out the bottom... Also burring pool noodles is a bad idea, they will break apart into microplastic relatively quickly. I do like the design of the upper planter though. I think I would put that upper frame directly onto the ground without a bottom.

Very cool planter design! But dirt🙉. For any Aggies ( or old Agricultural Engineers) it’s soil. Dirt is something that’s dirty. Yes, things can become “soiled” too. It’s sorta like the difference between flowers and weeds. A weed is just a flower growing where it’s not wanted. But we don’t call them weed gardens. Dirt is soil that’s not wanted. But we want soil with lots of organic material in it because it’s the organic matter that turns dirt into soil. I didn’t explain this very well except to say it hurts my ears when I hear perfectly good soil being called dirt. I built a planter for my sister a few years ago. I made it in the shape of the letter W for her name. I put it on her balcony for a little more colour while she was taking chemo. She didn’t make it. When I’m ready to make another planter I will make yours because I like its whimsy factor. Cheers! 🍻
