Wow, what a coincidence. I made my googles the same way you did before seeing this video. ( I wanted steampunk googles that could fit over my glasses, so I had to improvise). I did add a few extra steps. I added about 5 coats of paint. I used dark brown the first two times. When the paint is not wet, but kind of malleable (I use acrylic) I took some foil and scratched out some of the paint, painted over it with an even darker brown, dry, painted another coat of dark brown, and when it was dry I rubbed some light brown to make it look like weathered leather. I also painted the air vents (the little plastic things on the side of the goggles) gold/bronze. So they look like gears/rivets. I had enough time to find a small magnifying glass. I took a nail, heated the nail to burn a hole into the plastic handle of the magnifying glass, put a brass rivet ( paper fastener) through it and hot glued it to my goggles. This resulted in a moving magnifier/extra lens to the googles. I'm so glad on how it turned out. Thank you for the great video!

Cheaper to buy steampunk goggles than the supplies to make your own here where I live.

just a suggestion, Loctite 401 super glue works AMAZING for bonding metal to anything, including other metal. I work in a factory and have access to it and it has been super helpful. amazon has it for around $9 a bottle. if I can offer any tips for steampunk makers it's this glue, amazing stuff.

you could also put rub-n-buff onto the brown metallic acrylic paint

Good job, but actually in lieu of hot glue you can use industrial adhesives such as rubber cement, Barge cement (thought that's expensive) or M3 adhesives which are super strong and once they are attached its never coming off

Thank you sooo much. I am going on my first cruise on Halloween weekend. I want to make a steam punk costume. I have been going nuts trying to figure out how to do this without buying anything from China and waiting for it to come over. I wanted the welding goggles that I saw online at home depot, but when I went today, I only saw the sun glass type and the type I you used. I purchased two (in case I mess up one). I was feeling so down but my husband said he would help me with this. I have been looking for an easy way to do it but I couldn't find anything for the past couple of days. I typed in how to make steam punk goggles with regular goggles and I came across your video. I had been trying to figure out how to make the lenses and when I saw your video, I was like oh, okay, I can do that. So now I am going to take your advice and do that instead. Thank you soo much, I can't wait to try your instructions to make mine. Do you mind if I send a picture of my finished product? I think I will tint mine blue.

Me and a few of my friends have been doing some early halloween costume planning, (we're hand making them and we want to have enough time to get everything together and that might take a while since our school loves the homework and tests...) Anyway, whether you know who they are or not, we wanted to be slenderman's proxies: I'm going to be Ticci Toby, Sarah's going to be Masky and our other friend will be Hoodie. And Toby (my profile picture) usually has these goggles and this video is going to help me out so much. Thank You.

Actually, E6000 is a great all purpose, will hold just about anything type of glue. It's similar to hot glue in consistency, but isn't hot; making it much more useful. Cool vid, btw :)

The diving-glases are plastic, that is no real Steampunk then. Steampunk is without plastic!
