Don't worry many professional have forgotten to put the cover boot etc. on the cable before soldering. Pretty good job. If you stagger the cuts on the wire to match where they need to go you can just satyr them on from the side rather than kind of on the top like you have it and then just fold it in a little Tucker neatly. If you're using electronics solder it will have flux in it already (usually unless you get the kind without it) make sure you're not using plumbing solder or acid flux. Then after your side of the wires on give them a little time to make sure they don't come apart if they do it's a cold solder joint.

Max - You are so dedicated and thorough, great job! You have an excellent formula to your videos. As for your voice - do what feels comfortable! The people making those comments are just being rude, they feel uncomfortable hearing a man with a soft intelligent voice. My girlfriend and I like your videos, and happen to enjoy your voice and find it peaceful. The truth is for every one hater, there are a hundred new viewers who love your detailed videos and your vocal delivery. You have an excellent channel, Max. You do great work. You may know that I am also into video equipment preservation and appreciate all that you are doing to keep the art alive. I recently adapted the ClearClick recorder to some truly ancient BW cameras. Your process is very similar to that, but much simpler. Your production values are excellent. Keep up the great work! Hint: Tin the wires with solder first before soldering them to the connectors. Your soldering is very good otherwise.

Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 It’s awesome to hear from someone else who’s into video equipment preservation. I’ve been thinking about getting a ClearClick recorder myself to do a review, so it’s great to hear you’re using it with those beautiful BW cameras-sounds like a really cool project! I’m also preparing a video using a black-and-white camera with interchangeable C-mount lenses that I recently bought, and I’m super excited about that project. Your tip on tinning the wires is great, and I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again for your support, and let’s keep preserving this amazing gear!
@videolabguy
@videolabguy 3 ай бұрын
@@MaxVegaKun You're most welcome. One tip for recording monochrome video and why I specifically chose the ClearClick. Don't use a standard composite video input for BW. The yellow jack expects a composite color video signal and does some weird filtering that will remove the middle detail region of the BW video. Instead, wire the BW input to the Y input of the YC input connector. Leave the C input floating. The BW video will now be recorded at full bandwidth and look great. You might make a video where you try both inputs and compare the results. Keep having fun!

For the price, size, and built in battery, it is hard to beat the MiniDVR for casual camcorder use, however, it is not the best quality in that it records 30fps and therefore is either blending or discarding half of the available video information in an NTSC signal. Video bitrate probably isn't as high as some other options as well, but none of those are as small and inexpensive. I do think it would be interesting to see a side by side of just recording to min DV tape plus deinterlacing versus the quality you get with the MiniDVR. Yes, the miniDV tape is more of a hassle in terms of cost, media tape eventually wearing out, and then needing to capture in realtime using older software+Deinterlacing, but quality difference may be worth it to some. There's really no harm in recording both on tape and with the DVR simultaneously, Just saying that there are definite downsides (and benefits) to using this method, but reduced capture quality is the biggest downside. The ease of use however will probably put more vintage cameras back into use for the average user that doesn't necessarily care about getting the best quality result. If using it for things like music videos as you mentioned, I'd be wanting the best quality over ease of use personally, but that's just me. You've done an awesome job in getting the information out there so others can try it to see if the results meet their expectations and quality needs!

In the meantime, you can check out this generic battery: www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2414BQF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 it’s compatible if you plug it into the same port where the power adapter goes, and it’s much cheaper than trying to find a rebuilt one on eBay. Hi, I’m very interested in a video explaining how to make a JVC din connector adapter cable. My father has an old VHS-C JVC video camera, that he bought in the late 80’s or early 90’s. The din cable I have output in a SCART connector (which is impossible to find anymore on a modern TV). So an adapter cable like yours would be a big help, and much more convenient to use. I don’t know if it would work though with the miniDVR SD recording your using, because it’s a French video system SECAM (PAL tapes appear black and white when played on a SECAM deck).

Wouldnt using a dual trrs male to male cable just do the same thing? Or is there something specific about the cable that comes with the mini dvr that makes this all work?
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 2 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! A standard dual TRRS male-to-male cable could work for certain setups, but the issue is that the pinout on the mini DVR isn’t the same as standard TRRS cables. The mini DVR has a specific pin configuration for video, audio, and ground that doesn’t align with typical cables. So, just using a regular TRRS cable wouldn’t work without modification. That’s why you need a custom cable-so the connections line up properly with the DVR’s specific inputs. It’s a small but important difference that makes this setup work! 😊

could you also show us how to do it with the s-video?
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking! 😊 If your camera only has an S-video port, you can make an adapter to get composite video through the 3.5mm cable. However, you would lose the advantages of S-video, and there wouldn’t be any audio either. 😕 But if that’s what you need, let me know, and I can make a simple diagram to help you out!

You could use a cable like this one: www.amazon.com/Create-idea-S-Video-Camcorder-Set-Top-Box/dp/B0CKLLRV7K/ref=sr_1_16?crid=1VE4BYR1C6VN7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hiozYEI65PGvNbe3IamSjAqYV4uH0rqgA3PcN5PnpWFp9nXNgddZzvfcyOuE-h571bK1bmYGXzP4q_epPhKE4HriSVljxuQKwZI36l0oHtfkXZ9VcDepiGHjPwJOBmdLR3wHqgVnEhW4uUJn2eQCw9KaU_RrjFo9yAPLuU6hUqxErYKu9A9sl5bjx4iYU9MO5QarNUpR87phbFu9kV7b5XfmcR-ES0eQIolvNwXMTmqXBqTJqZ7durMgZ7pQalWa4_MDtjyfjYUUg606c1zew0zg4XHgS-AN6qazk2ePKMk.AE76-vKs0y7ab9PDhBU-FVNd60VVrJldF3GDTVcv-Ak&dib_tag=se&keywords=svideo+to+av&qid=1726027463&s=electronics&sprefix=svideo+to+av+%2Celectronics%2C142&sr=1-16 And by following the diagram of the 3.5mm female connector, you can adapt it to use the S-video output from your camera, Hope that helps!

Does is record all the icons through the DVR?
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 3 ай бұрын
No worries, the icons from the Mini DVR don’t get recorded in the final video, so you’re good there! 😊 You do have the option to add a date stamp if you want, but I’m guessing that’s not what you’re after. However, one thing to watch out for-while I’ve tested a ton of cameras, a couple of them didn’t output a "clean" signal, and the camera’s menu got recorded in the final video. Luckily, that’s been pretty rare, but it’s something to keep in mind!

Can it fit in the tape compartment?
@AUSTORMCHASERS
@AUSTORMCHASERS 3 ай бұрын
Seems pointless as you’d have to eject it each time to start/stop recording.
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 3 ай бұрын
It could technically fit, but I’m not sure it makes much sense unless the tape mechanism is broken and you’re looking for a more compact setup. In that case, you could place it inside, but the issue is you’d need to use the DVR’s buttons to start and stop recording, which would mean constantly opening and closing the tape compartment. I’m actually working on a project where I’m integrating the mini DVR internally into an old Fisher Price camera. I’m planning to solder the button terminals to external buttons for easier control. It’s going to be a bit of a labor-intensive (and maybe even pointless) project, but it’ll definitely be fun! 😄

Makes no sense to bybass the Analog Tape.
@MaxVegaKun
@MaxVegaKun 2 ай бұрын
I totally understand your point! However, at least to my eyes, the "look" of VHS tape is preserved quite well with this setup. While it's true that it’s not 100% identical to recording on actual tape, when you balance the convenience this method offers with the final result, I still think it's worth it. Using original retro cameras gives a more authentic feel compared to applying a filter in post-editing. For me, it's a good compromise between modern convenience and keeping that vintage charm alive. 😊 It is also especially useful if the tape mechanism is unreliable or damaged. It allows for a tapeless setup that still retains much of the retro look and feel of the footage. That being said, if you’re a fan of the full analog experience, I respect that too-there’s definitely a unique quality in sticking to the original medium. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🎥
