Baking soda creates a neutral solution (essentially water and salt) because one is an acid and one is a base. The fizzy reaction may help break down some dirt, but once it's done fizzing you're basically using water to clean. There's no disinfecting properties anymore. You should use water and baking soda to scrub, rinse and then use vinegar over that. Mixing them makes them useless!

Yeah I scrub with a water and baking soda paste for the abrasion and then rinse with vinegar for the fixing and acid. Rinse with water. Works great.

They use the fizzinng reaction to physically lift surface dirt. But i only use bicarb and vinegar together to clean drains. The fizz pushes hair and grease, seperates it and breaks it up inside the drain. Works very well.

I've eliminated all my junk mail. I wrote to my news paper company and had them stop sending me weekly coupon ads. I've called companies and have personally told them to take me off their junk mail list. I have emailed companies. When a company sends out junk mail with a return envelop you put the junk mail in the envelope. Write on the junk mail "take me off your list". Write the same thing on envelope on the front and back side. Then out your address on the envelope so that they know who wants off their list. Mail the envelope and the company gets charged for the postage. It's how it works in the USA. Plus, their online companies that also claim to take you off their list. I don't remember their names. I did that too. I rarely get mail anymore and I love it. I feel less stressed knowing that I don't get mail often! Another tip is to stop buying paper towels. You can make them out of fabric or you can just use rags. Also stop buying napkins. You can DIY them! You should make a video on DIY napkins. Easy to make. Stop buying plastic wrap. You can use glass jars and containers instead. Stop buying little plastic bags and little paper bags. Sometimes, I go to the store and they give me a little paper bag. I save those paper bags and I reuse them when I need one. If I shop online and the item comes in some sort of a bag, then I save that bag and I use it to put trash in it. Even if the bag is small. Another great tip is to save bubble wrap. When I got married a lot of my packages came in bubble wrap. I saved all my bubble wrap and I actually used it to wrap my Christmas ornaments in. Money saver! Another tip is to make your cleaning products. Put them in a glass spray bottle. I prefer that over the stainless steel. If your clumsy then go with stainless steel. Another great tip is to save old socks. If you have one sock that doesn't have a match or one sock with a hole in it, then save it. Make a rag box. I use old socks for cleaning or dusting. You can stick your hand in the sock as you clean. Old shirts make great rags too. Old towels and sheets also make great rags. Old sheets also make great drop cloths when you paint a room. Old pillow cases make great rags as well. I store all my rags in a basket. Last tip is to shop farmers markets or find CSA boxes in your area. In the US you can have fresh organic fruited and vegetables delivered to your home from local farms. I plan to do this. Hope you like my tips. These things I do now make me feel so less stressed out. I feel light weight off my shoulders. I'm really into simplicity right now. I may not be like Zero Waste Home or Trash For Tossers but I always try to be good to the environment. Check out those two things I mentioned. They give me ideas to live my own less stress life. I do it the way I want too.

Also good tip, bring your own coffee cup! I don't drink coffee but I do drink a whole lot of tea and chai lattes, so bringing my own keep cup is really good. I've never had anyone tell me they couldn't do my drink in my cup, but I have had a few confused looks. Ultimately though, you've just gotta ignore it and be confident. You don't need an expensive KeepCup brand glass and cork cup, a cheaply thermos will do just fine. I have a $2 plastic one that I keep in a stubby holder (the things used to keep beer cold) because it keeps the heat in the cup and off my hands. Yay for helping the planet!!!

Also if you don't want to use plastic cups (bc in the long run it's still a non compostable material) there are new coffee cups that are made out of bamboo. This helps bc bamboo is actually the fastest growing natural resource and is 100% compostable. Cool about bamboo is that you can still put them in the dishwasher. When you don't want to use the cup anymore you can easily break it into pieces which are indeed compostable. Some goes for normal dishes as well :)

I cloth diaper my kiddos, use cloth menstrual pads, made my own wool dryer balls, buy most of my clothing at the thrift store, and make lots of DIYs using repurposed materials (you can see the tutorials on my channel). Feels good to know I'm doing a small part to be kind to the planet :)

Something you can do with clothes that are too worn, like jeans, to donate: Cut the salvageable fabric into strips (1" to 2" depending on the weight of the fabric), fold those in thirds, (If you like things neat, you can sew the strips) and then either braid the strips and then sew into an old-fashioned rag rug or crochet into a floor mat. They're washable (if the original clothes were) and can be customized to fit whatever space you need. They also make great beds for pets.
@teapotlizard
@teapotlizard 7 жыл бұрын
true! my great aunt has made loads of rugs this way. and i made a few toys for my dog and my friend's dog as well (by just braiding a bunch of fabric strips into a really thick, strong braid), and even sold a few. and my mum always cuts old worn-out t-shirts etc into squares to be used as cleaning rags. :)

If you're not very good at sewing or don't really need any of the projects above, you can always donate clothes that don't fit but are still intact to charity! Somebody else will be very grateful for the T-Shirt you didn't want anymore :) another tip is to check clothing lines like H&M whether they offer an opportunity to recycle old clothes! Recycling jeans works pretty well 💚

Keegan Ders zero waste is where you recycle or reuse almost everything right? Quick question: how do you do toilet paper?
@1985homeslice
@1985homeslice 7 жыл бұрын
oreo luva actually there are 5 R's with zero waste. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. The idea is to create less trash going into the dumpster by avoiding things that need to be thrown away all together. It's also to limit how many products you are recycling as well because you are using higher quality products. As for the toilet paper thing, I either buy toilet paper made from bamboo (because it is better for the environment to produce) or just buy individual rolls wrapped in paper that I can recycle. I hope this helps you (:

If you don't like using animal fats than fabric softener is also a no go. Dryer balls. They'll be your new best friend instead of dryer sheets also. Also things like using flannel squares to clean and wipe stuff up instead of paper towels. Menstrual cups instead of tampons or pads. There are a lot of really wasteful paper products that cannot be recycled. Cloth diapers are also coming back into popularity.

Yeah! Hey guys here's some ideas if you want to make a second video. 1. Diy Beeswrap to replace seran wrap (if you haven't heard of these you can find them online, I make my own and they're the bomb) 2. Menstrual cups + reusable pads (could probably do a diy with the pads) 3. Soap nuts for laundry or bulk laundry detergent (it's not just food products in bulk) 4. Most Starbucks give you 10 cents off if you bring your own cup! 5. Metal to go containers and bento boxes (might even be able to diy cute designs on one)

What recipe do you use for your beeswax wraps? I've seen a few floating around
@fairyfreak1
@fairyfreak1 7 жыл бұрын
Be careful with soap nuts! They're actually not good for machines and can void your warranty. They don't have any surfectants (I think that's what they're called) so the soap and dirt can't lift off your clothing. Eventually your clothes will feel filmy and dingy because they're coated in dirt. I recently had to strip my clothes to get all the scum off and the water was black 😭
@1985homeslice
@1985homeslice 7 жыл бұрын
Wendy H First I make sure I'm always using 100% cotton and then I grate the beeswax directly on top. I sandwich the fabric between 2 pieces of parchment paper, set my iron on the highest setting and iron it until every area is completely coated with the wax. I like to repeat on the other side, just be careful because if it's hard to bend then the beeswax tends to just flake off.

Freeze your own veggies. Stock up at farmer's markets or farm stands so you know they are all local, then cut them up and blanch quickly, put in a tightly sealed bag or dish (reuseable vacuum seal bags are amazing) and freeze. You get super fresh veg all year that is local. With fruits you can skip the blanching step and just cut and bag them to freeze for baking or smoothies.

Also I use Dr bronners as a body wash, to make laundry detergent, and to clean my home, and it works great for all those things. Omg love this video. It is so great that you are spreading awareness about this. I just thought I could mention that lush is another great store for soaps and other cosmetics they are 100% vegetarian and mostly vegan (they have honey in a few of their products that is why they are not 100% vegan). It is really good for shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap because they offer solid options so you dont need to have a container. However they do offer tins made form metal for their solid products so you may reuse the tins and not have to through them out. I do really like this video I just thought that I could mention this if you wanted to say something about this store in another eco-friendly video.

just a liiiilllll comment... recycled fabrics aren't really "the most amazingly sustainable fabric ever." The energy used for the recycling process is extremely high, (frequently from non renewable sources) and often more than what's required for regular fabric production. Also... these fabrics aren't biodegradable, so we still have the issue of how to discard them after their lifecycle. There's no perfect solution in the fashion/production bizz, and i really truely looooved this video! We need more of THIS and of women like you!!! Im a designer and constantly rediscovering what sustainability/eco truly means through my brand, so this video touches close to my heart

Thank you for this video, I often watch DIY videos and the product is useless and/or wasteful and I appreciate you all making an effort! Another VERY easy eco tip is just to bring your own coffee cup/jar/thermos when getting coffee or drink when your out. We think coffee cups are paper but they are plastic lined and really hard to actually recycle. Also some places will discount your coffee if you bring your own container!!! 😊 Also stop supporting fast fashion, it is one of the major contributors to world wide pollution. 😊 😊 😊

*bamboo toothbrushes and DIY toothpaste* are great eco-swaps for plastic/garbage that no one is able to recycle! the thick hard plastic in toothbrushes and metal toothpaste tubes are never recycled are creates lots of waste in our environment. Also *buying your teas in bulk & using a metal infuser* is so much better (and cheaper) than prepackaged, individual tea bags or filters (most of which contain plastic or plastic lining)

I use a water filter on my home tap and a stainless steel refillable water bottle and a worm farm to eat my compost (no smell and gives you free fertiliser for your plants and garden, they don’t like citrus or onions). Organic vegetables can be home delivered all in a cardboard box. Don’t forget to wash tins and plastic that go into your recycling as they often won’t recycle dirty containers. Beauty products can be purchased in glass or aluminium and you can make your own makeup cotton remover pads or use a face washer instead of disposable cotton pads. Buy an eco ball instead of laundry detergent, great for those of us with sensitive skin❤️✨

I'm so happy you made this video!!! I hope more people start caring more about the environment. I actually didn't know other places you have to pay for plastic bags! We don't have to pay for them here and I feel like that's why so many people use them

My all purpose cleaning spray is 3/4 water, 1/4 white vinegar with just a few drops of essential oils. I use it to clean my kitchen, bathroom mirrors, table, my daughter's highchair, and never have to worry about chemicals in the air that could hurt her little lungs!!

Awesome video! One tip I've adopted lately is bringing my own Tupperware to restaurants for leftovers. Reduces waste and keeps food fresh :)

I keep a pitcher by my kitchen sink and shower to fill with water while waiting for it to become hot. I then use that water to water houseplants and outdoor plants. I use cloth napkins, they are easy to throw in with the laundry.

Oh my god Dr. Bronner's magic soap is my ride or die soap! I have eight bottles of it right now. If you'll read about the company you'll see they're beyond awesome! Plus I use baking soda and viniger to clean like... everything. It's genious.

Yessssssssss. Loved seeing this side of your channel and lives! Sometimes KZbin culture can be so wasteful. Would love to see a series around this from you both. We are so lucky to have bulk barn in Canada... also, a collaboration with the Toronto Tool Library would be sweet or other zero wasters like Alli Cherry from California.

One way you can reuse single use plastic bags when you end up getting them is by turning them into plarn. There a plenty of tutorials on how to do this and I personally like to take my plarn and make bedrolls for the homeless out of it. The reason plarn works so well is it’s very light weight and with plastic it insulates and there’s no chance of bedbugs with a plastic roll. You’re not only reusing single use plastic but you’re helping the homeless :) and it’s really fun to make

Use Dr Brunner's soap in a used foaming soap dispenser ....inch of soap and the rest water. Also adding glass garden marbles keeps it from falling as much. A little goes a long way.

BulkBarn doesn't save you money... it gives you the option of zero waste, but you're paying more on average then 'nofrills' or other budget grocers. Living Zero Waste and eco-friendly isn't a trend it's a lifestyle! Love these DIYs, keep it up ladies! Cheers from the 519

Good point, but many bulk options outside of BulkBarn (e.g. Costco!) can save you money as well as excessive packaging that comes with smaller budget items at places like NoFrills & etc.

Biene Wal I agree, there are just not enough zero waste options overall. Costco sells Eco toilet paper all individually plastic wrapped and then the whole bundle was wrapped again, insanity. It's all about supply and demand!

MeredithPlease Feel that! We really need to revolutionize how we think and use products. And making eco-friendly/zero-waste efforts affordable, too, will help that. I'm an obsessive upcycler, though, so a lot of packaging gets reused in my art/journaling, at least.

I love this video, I've been trying really hard to be more Eco friendly recently (i was raised by mild hippies so I've always been aware, but lately I've just been doing *more*. I love seeing popular KZbinrs (and any social media people) raising awareness on things like this, especially ones like you two who don't necessarily have their main "thing" being helping the earth (apart from your thrift flip series). But yeah, I love this video and I love that you're making the average joe more aware. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

OMG I loved this video! I actually went vegan two years ago due to my environmental beliefs, and I was always hoping someone with a platform would make it more known to the rest of people that it can be cool and easy to be eco-friendly! It makes me sad too when some people think its dumb to recycle or hate using paper bags or glass containers and say stuff like "I'm not about that green life" and try to laugh it off -- so basically, I just really loved this video haha. I hope other people catch on to the message of this video!
