It's always good to review the basics. Some people forget that it's the SOUND that's important for determining whether to use "a" or "an" and not the head letter of the noun. This is really the trickiest part of it for some students, but it becomes easier with practice. It works with some adjectives preceding nouns as well. An honest person. (aw-nist) A European villa. Nice one, Gill!

August 20, 2022 - After trying to get my question just right for Google search to answer my question regarding the use of "a" and "an". Google search finally offered this video along with some others. Thank you to Gill for very clearly explaining how and why those words should be used. I know a lot of people wish they had her as their teacher in school like I do.

Thank you for the lesson! It's so insightful. I've just seen a video by a native English teacher and unfortunately, she uses letters to determine what article to use, which is misleading. It's all about sounds and whether the noun is singular, countable, or uncountable.

Thank you for the nice video, even though I still have a little question about the use of ‘a’ and ‘an’. What happens when you have a noun which is an acronym? If SS stands for ‘source separation’, is it ‘a SS method’, or ‘an SS method’? Thanks again Cheers!
@engvidGill6 жыл бұрын
hi Raul -- it's 'an SS method' because the letter S is pronounced 'ess', so it begins with a vowel sound :-)

The rule for "a" is also applicable for abbreviations of let's say organizations as such Organizarion of European ......Associations? an OEA office or an OEA office we should write?
@engvidGill3 жыл бұрын
Hi - yes, if the first letter of the abbreviation begins with a vowel sound, eg an ATV ..., an ECG ..., an IPC ..., an OEA ..., you say 'an' when speaking it, so you also write 'an'. The exception is the letter U, because it's pronounced YOU, and the Y is a consonant sound, so you would say/write 'a US Navy uniform', etc. I hope that helps :-)

Do people also say 'a' as [ei] before a vowel in such a special case? I'm not sure and deciding the next word in my speech, and I'll say, like '[ei]… entity' (still, I write it as 'an').
@engvidGill3 жыл бұрын
Hi - "an entity" is pronounced with the N - it sounds like "un" - "un-entity" :-)

It's crazy how often you hear people using these words incorrectly and I pick up on it every time and also some people only use the word a and never say an when its necessary
@gardensofthegods4 жыл бұрын
For whatever reason it just drives me nuts when Americans or English people who have lived there for at least several generations do not know the difference between when to use a or when do you use an .... it irritates me to no end to hear people say something like that is an beautiful car .... how can they not tell that it sounds really screwed up ? And it drives me nuts when people sound as if they're talking like a four-year-old when they say something like I want a apple . I'm not talking about foreigners and I'm not talkin about people whose family has only been here for a short time . I don't know why this irks me so much but it really does .

When it comes to letter 'U', many questions arise in my mind. The letter U is starting with a consonant sound /y/ . Then why it is said as a vowel? And we say U is a vowel but for University, we say it starts with a consonant sound /y/. Why is it so?
