This is weird all around. Equal parts water and sugar makes a simple syrup. Not something you would want to add at the bottom of a cake. I think what you intended to make is a caramel. For that you would melt the sugar in a pan then once it is melted you add a little water The apple half with the skin and seeds is just 🫣. You could have done thinly sliced or even diced (peeled and cored) apples on top of the caramel and that would have been good

@@birdhead73 I've never done it but I've heard of people adding the simple syrup after the cake is baked to add moisture. She also could have used butter and brown sugar since it was an upside down cake but I agree, peeled and cored apples would have been best.
