Just got a John Wilson rod and a decent reel can’t wait to get the rest but didn’t have a clue. Thanks Bill this video helped a lot. Still a bit clueless but going with my pal who goes next week in our local park, might not be much just want to learn then get some big boys 😉👍

I bought some Drennan starlights once and they were terrible, lasted about two hours and were expensive, the cheap Chinese ones I bought off eBay lasted all night and were a fraction of the price. In fact the next time I went nightfishing weeks later, they were still glowing! Food for thought.

I always believed buy what you can to get started and then slowly move up the ladder, when you can. Just go have fun and catch some fish.

TheBelroyal Hi I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I have to say that in some ways fishing hasn’t changed much since I was a small boy fishing with a garden cane and a cotton line. The very first video in my playlist is about really simple fishing gear for beginners. Rubbish quality video but good content. The biggest change in fishing is the materials have improved greatly and in real terms the gear is much cheaper and much better quality than it was when I was young. In a way with the rise of the pole we have gone back to a stick with the line tied to the end, it’s just the stick is longer and made from carbon fibre! Tight Lines

Hi bill love your videos keep them coming mate I have a question or two I have purchased a 13 ft drennan vertex float rod it’s a lovely rod today I was on a small commercial venue fishing for nice roach bream etc and what ever comes along I was rigged up with a waggler 5lb main line down to a 4 lb hook length and I hooked into a big carp it was running me ragged lol all over the lake it eventually went into the margins round a bend into snags and broke me off I didn’t want to pull into the fish to much of fear of breaking the rod as it cost over 100 pound so I’m asking would the rod break if I applied pressure on the fish ? Would a cheap pellet waggler rod be better for this type of venue ? Or what would you recommend any advice welcome cheers

You can apply a surprising amount of pressure before the line breaks, if you're using the recommended mono eg 2lb to 4lb (slightly heavier eg 5lb is OK) the rod won't break playing a fish. Drennan rods are good quality, the wall thickness, taper and ring spacing are well thought out and tested so no need to worry about the tip breaking - it is effectively protected by the overall action of the rod and slight stretch of the line. If you are targeting smaller fish on light tackle and hook a big carp you are unlikely to land it especially around snags. Judging the appropriate tackle to use given the venue and what you are likely to catch is an important aspect. Light tackle produces more bites, it sounds like you can persevere with your float setup but if there are many bigger fish and snags you should move to heavier gear.

Hi Bill. I noticed you didn't mention Drennan double strength line. I use it all the time, you get the strength say, of 5lb line but half the diameter, so a diameter of 2.5lb. It's good for my winter fishing where I want a low diameter hook length but need a bit of strength in case I hook into a carp/chub or F1. I would strongly recommend it, what do you think?

Clive Bindley . Hi Double Strength is a great line but I would not recommend it for beginners because of the lack of stretch. I tried it when it first came out and used it a lot but you have to be careful with it. Martin Bowler said on one of his video’s that he wouldn’t even put split shot on it and tied hid hooks straight thru’ to keep its strength. I now only use it occasionally and mostly use it for hook lengths for finesse situations, mostly I use Supplex and Supplex Fluorocarbon for hooklengths but I’m experimenting with Xtra Tough as well. Mainlines for me are Supplex or Floatfish and good old Series 7 which is very reliable and cheap! Tight Lines.

Hi Bill, I have been using Drennan double strength for over 5 years and have never had problems with " lack of stretch ", I use it as a mainline and make up hooklengths with it. I catch fish ranging from small silvers to carp up to 14lb. I also put split shot on it with no problems. I suppose it's a case of each to their own, and use what you are confident with. I have used Supplex and I do like it. but mainly I use double strength.

Clive Bindley . Hi I agree that having confidence in your tackle is very important. We all have our own preferences, let’s face it there are a lot of guys still out there still using split cane rods and wouldn’t touch glass fibre or carbon. Mind you having grown up using a cane rod they are welcome to it! Tight Lines

Well I am old school in certain areas of my fishing tackle, I still use a centrepin reel which was made in the '50's ( Gypsy D'Argent made by Grice & Young ), and I still like to use porcupine floats which I paint in brighter colours, neon yellow or orange. .I also have one or two rods from the 90's, but cane rods? No thanks, i did have one but didn't really enjoy using it
