@@TightWadDIY so I find this vid to be very good but there’s 1 problem. My microwave is nothing like the 1 in the vid. It does not mount onto the cupboards. It does not have the thing on the top above the cooking area. And it does not have screws on the top of it either. Using google lens I found it is a General Electric microwave. My dad says he bought it approximately 20 years ago. I found this vid hoping to see if I cud fix it myself for cheap instead of heaving it into the dump and buying a new microwave. Cud u direct me to a vid that wud help me with this type of microwave?

I then opened it up to see if any of the electrical circuits had blown. Thankfully, not so. I then thought it must be the fuse. The other night I dismantled the bottom panel, the door and the handle, and the control panel along with the circuit board in preparation for my new parts shipment. I had to replace the handle and the control panel assembly because the touchpad had some contacts fail and the bottom of the handle broke. After cleaning everything thoroughly and removing all the grease and gunk build up, I reassembled everything and now my microwave acts like it’s cooking. The interior light comes on, the timer counts down, the turntable does not rotate nor does the magnetron work. Ideas? GE with exhaust fan ducted to the outside. If the main fuse is blown will anything even come on? If the thermal switch has gone bad will everything I just described still function? @@crazaholic1968 If the GFCI continues to trip after the micro is out of the picture then, yeah, it's probably time to replace it. They do fail over time. If not, then something else might be wrong with the micro, of course. I'm here 'cause my micro was tripping a non GFCI breaker. Then when I plugged it into a GFCI it began tripping that. Then the micro stopped working entirely. I suspect my door switch has gone south and that blew the internal fuse finally. Note that the 20A breaker is upstream of the GFCI outlet. GFCI Outlets are some times 15A. In my experience they are more sensitive to over current as well as short to ground. Makes sense, they are supposed to protect people from shorts around damp / wet locations. Annoying, but safer.

@@crazaholic1968 It could be a number of different things. Start by replacing the GFCI. If the new one trips again, check the outlets on the same circuit. One could have an issue causing the GFCI to switch off doing it’s job properly.

@@JackWilson327 it doesn’t trip frequently. Last time it happened when the old microwave died two years ago. Got the new unit and no issues so far until last night it tripped again. So I guess it was a random surge or something maybe? I tested the outlet using a gfci tester and it seems working normally. Not sure if I need it checked with an electrician. Outlet is not designated for microwave use. Just using one of the outlet On counter top which happened to be connected to a nearby gfci outlet.

Hi all, just a question regarding the fuse. We in the UK have fuse within the plug. Do us devices not keep fuses within the plug? Thank you
@TightWadDIY3 жыл бұрын
It’s not common to have a fuse in the plug. I’ve only seen that in Christmas lights here.

When you say cross the leads on the capacitor do you mean connect the 2 leads with the screwdriver, like a short? It looked like you just touched each lead a few times but didn't connect them
@TightWadDIY3 жыл бұрын
Touch both at the same time with the screwdriver. Use caution.

my microwave looked like the one in the picture. I didn't have to take off control panel. I just took off the two black screws at top of black plastic vent. It just slide and tilts. easy ( control panel didn't need to come off). Next I took off the two little silver screw to vent or fuse cover.. Took cover off Replaced 20 AMP AGC fast blow fuse and that was problem!!!!!! thanks for the help from the video!!!!

This is why I love KZbin and guys like TightWad! My microwave was like 10+ years old. Then boom, no power. Crap. I figure it's tits up, so, I pull it out and take it to a recycler. They wanted $5 to recycle it! Nope, I'll figure another way. Then I thought, maybe I should try and see what's wrong. So, I put it out in front of my garage for like a week. Today, I type in a few words, find this video, go out and do exactly what he says. Tested the fuse with a multimeter, no tone. So, I wrap a little aluminum foil and BOOM! No, not an explosion, Power on baby! So, I'm on my way to the hardware store and for $4.50, 50 cents less than the cost to recycle it, I'll pop in the fuse. Then I get to reinstall it. I guess that's my penitence for not checking KZbin before uninstalling it. Hey, saved a few hundred dollars!

Appreciate it! my microwave lost power when I tried to pull out the plastic latch (mechanism that keeps door closed) thanks for the advice on the fuse hopefully its just that.
@TightWadDIY2 жыл бұрын
A broken door latch will definitely cause it not to work but shouldn’t cause you to have no power at all.

Thought the microwave was dead but at 2:40 when you pulled the door the light came on ? Or was it from your camera ?

We had to reshoot that part of the video due to camera failure. That was filmed after the repair was completed.

I'm not sure how I blew the fuse but this helped me fix it! It was a different configuration than mine, but it was enough to help me find the fuse. Thank you very much. My door switch on the top seems faulty too, but I'm not going to worry until it completely stops 😂.

Really helpful as our MW went down w/ no power anywhere...! Checked plug outlet/breaker & all are good. Our model is only 3 yrs old & appears to be a newer version...? Taking the panel off & checking the fuse, it appears to be fried. I do not see a capacitor up front like your demo. Tin foil wrap the fuse & it powers up :>) I have a 20 amp fuse but there is no voltage rating on it. Putting the fuse place & the MW powers up. Question being, is it OK to use the fuse I put in as a replacement since there's no voltage rating on it?
@TightWadDIY2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend getting the right size fuse. You want it to blow so other things don’t get fried or catch on fire.
