@@TightWadDIY so I find this vid to be very good but there’s 1 problem. My microwave is nothing like the 1 in the vid. It does not mount onto the cupboards. It does not have the thing on the top above the cooking area. And it does not have screws on the top of it either. Using google lens I found it is a General Electric microwave. My dad says he bought it approximately 20 years ago. I found this vid hoping to see if I cud fix it myself for cheap instead of heaving it into the dump and buying a new microwave. Cud u direct me to a vid that wud help me with this type of microwave?

I then opened it up to see if any of the electrical circuits had blown. Thankfully, not so. I then thought it must be the fuse. You had me right up to using the tin foil. If there's a significant short in the microwave that "troubleshooting technique" could lead to the wires melting and frying the circuit board(s). Better to test with a multimeter and leave it at that. Why RISK bypassing the fuse, especially when you don't know if something is shorted out?

I made rice once. Ran it for 10 minutes. Wasnt done so ran it for another 10. At the end of the second run it tried to ring the done bell, and went black. Did all those things you suggest, and was about to unscrew the vent panel, when I decided a cup of coffee was in order. So I opened the stove top, lit the burner, and proceeded to boil water for the first or second time since we bought this rv. Standing there waiting to see if water boils faster by watching it, I fiddled with the hood fan and light switch. Turned it on and was startled to find the fan was blowing down, not drawing. A moment later I looked up and lo, the microwave was back on. I dont know what the connection between these events are: watching water boil, fiddling with the fan switch (bulb was burnt out on the hood fan, waste of money to replace a bulb that only lasts a week or two) . . or just waiting. I drank the instant coffee with great satisfaction at the magic of science.

Caution on using "insulated" tool for discharging capacitor. I bought a multi-head/bit screwdriver at a large chain hardware store. Tool looks like one shown in video. I notice one day (while I'm using tool in daylight) fine, raised print on black, "rubber" coated handle: "WARNING: NOT INSULATED. WILL NOT PROTECT AGAINST ELECTRIC SHOCK." Make sure it is insulated. Also, there needs to be somewhere for the charge to go. Resistors, and ground. More of a process, but probably safer. Thanks & Take care.

Second that. Some of these tools we're getting have a ton of carbon (charcoal) in the rubber. The plastic should be okay I would think. One would have to put a meg ohm on it to see, absent a rating ... I digress I have rigged up a 40W incandescent appliance light bulb in a socket with a couple of test leads just for this purpose. Well, I'll give this a try. My issue was re-heating up a couple of baked potatoes. Instead of 3min 30 seconds, I (apparently) hit 35min and went downstairs to talk to the wife. Yea, smoke alarms, and if anyone hear has charcoaled a baked potato, it's pretty intense, smell wise. So I have very a similar setup, verified source power with multi-meter, but no bueno.Don't know if fuse (likely) but it didn't trip the breaker. Even if it is the fuse, could also be the fan motor backed up with smoke, and even if this fires it up I may well be smelling charcoaled baked potato every time, which won't please the wife, even with a miraculous save. Likely out a $400 microwave, but I still got a chance right? Thanks for the vid. I'll update with outcome.

This is why I love KZbin and guys like TightWad! My microwave was like 10+ years old. Then boom, no power. Crap. I figure it's tits up, so, I pull it out and take it to a recycler. They wanted $5 to recycle it! Nope, I'll figure another way. Then I thought, maybe I should try and see what's wrong. So, I put it out in front of my garage for like a week. Today, I type in a few words, find this video, go out and do exactly what he says. Tested the fuse with a multimeter, no tone. So, I wrap a little aluminum foil and BOOM! No, not an explosion, Power on baby! So, I'm on my way to the hardware store and for $4.50, 50 cents less than the cost to recycle it, I'll pop in the fuse. Then I get to reinstall it. I guess that's my penitence for not checking KZbin before uninstalling it. Hey, saved a few hundred dollars!

Then the micro stopped working entirely. I suspect my door switch has gone south and that blew the internal fuse finally. Note that the 20A breaker is upstream of the GFCI outlet. GFCI Outlets are some times 15A. In my experience they are more sensitive to over current as well as short to ground. Makes sense, they are supposed to protect people from shorts around damp / wet locations. Annoying, but safer.

@@crazaholic1968 It could be a number of different things. Start by replacing the GFCI. If the new one trips again, check the outlets on the same circuit. One could have an issue causing the GFCI to switch off doing it’s job properly.

@@JackWilson327 it doesn’t trip frequently. Last time it happened when the old microwave died two years ago. Got the new unit and no issues so far until last night it tripped again. So I guess it was a random surge or something maybe? I tested the outlet using a gfci tester and it seems working normally. Not sure if I need it checked with an electrician. Outlet is not designated for microwave use. Just using one of the outlet On counter top which happened to be connected to a nearby gfci outlet.

When my microwave died there was a flash and a bang (or pop), after which it died completely. Took the cover off and looked at the circuitry but didn't see anything that looked like it burned, in fact everything looked okay, except it wouldn't power up. It might be the fuse, in fact that's what I thought but didn't know where the fuse might be. Will try what's suggested in this video to see if I can fix it.

Would have been nice for you show the discharge. Is there a spark or a pop we are expecting?

There shouldn’t be a spark or pop.

Thank you for your video. Question: Do you need to check power box (break panel) if there is power at the outlet?

KZbin hid the count of dislikes on all videos when Biden started getting massive amount of dislikes and very little likes on his videos. Media interference at its best!

Thank you for this video. Mine was as simple as unplugging it and plugging it back in 🥴But I live in an apartment so the ac cord is hidden so it didn't occur to me.

Sounds pretty easy. Except for the “could kill you” part. Loved the video but I don’t feel like you explained how to remove the power from the capacitor. Doesn’t “crossing the leads” require touching both of them at once with the screwdriver? Kind of like the way one would hot wire a car back in the day. Afraid to try this fix w/out a better explanation for this part of the process.
@TightWadDIY Жыл бұрын
Sorry Jerry. Yes you are crossing both terminals at the same time.

Our didnt have any power at all either. I replaced the fuse. The display lit up. I opened and closed door and it was still working. I pressed the start button which automatically puts 30 seconds and then starts up. It ran for 1-2 seconds and then turned. What should I do next? Btw I did see the fan turn on right as microwave started. Please help. Thanks

I have a GE microwave model PEM31SMSS that stopped working a couple months ago (after 9 years of light duty). After watching your very informative video, I really think I can replace the fuse myself if I can get inside it to determine what size replacement fuse to order. I can send photo if that would help. Sorry, I can’t provide the type of support. I’m not an appliance repair expert.

99% of all kitchen appliances plug into a GFCI receptacle/circuit. Always check for a GFCI receptacle fault after a storm, especially if a surge protector is being used. Most GFCI receptacles have a small light if tripped. Push the reset button on the receptacle until the click is heard and the light goes out. The GFCI could be a breaker in the main power breaker box or one receptacle in the kitchen that is in line with other receptacles. “Look for a receptacle with a little yellow light”!
@TightWadDIY2 жыл бұрын
Great tip. Counter top microwaves are probably plugged into a GFCI circuit. Over range or built in microwaves are almost always on a dedicated circuit and not typically GFCI unless it’s next to a water source.
