With Macrium Reflect now killing off the free version of the software, there is a gap in the market for a new go to option for free and easy disk cloning and system disk migration.
Seems that Disk Genius fits the bill and is a low footprint program that doesn't bog down the system or nag you for registration or upgrades.
This managed to clone my Windows 11 system disk to another drive in just slightly over 1 MINUTE!
that is incredible!
Clearly your mileage will vary depending on the drives you use and how much data there is on them, but it seems that the drives were performing at full speed, which is often not the case in the "free" version of apps like this.
I am glad to find a good alternative to Macrium reflect free, and hope it works well you you to.

Thanks Mike, really easy to follow and just the right level of detail given the amount of options that the tool gives. Its a shame that the companies that make these keep dropping the clone option from the free option but I cant blame them, I cant remember ever upgrading to a paid version except maybe 15 years ago on a data recovery product. My own clone on an old PC took about 4 hours as I was copying about 500gb sata ssd to 2tb sata ssd via USB using the hot option.

What a great piece of software! Having recently manually moved all my games from 2x drives onto new 2Tb m.2 and then swapped drive letters around so steam / epic etc werent aware of any changes then this software would made it so much quicker and easier to achieve. I came across Disk genius recently when researching an M.2 migration from 500GB to a gen 4 1TB. I have been using Macrium for some time to do backups but as support is ending soon I was looking for an alternative. Being retired I needed a cheap option 😂. I can't believe how quickly DG did the clone and changed the boot sequence. WIN 11 and several games and all my programs done in under 10 minutes. Highly recommended. Thanks for the video it's covered some of the options I haven't explored yet.

Disk Genius worked perfectly. 1 tb ssd to 1 tb m.2 nvme (in an external USB 3.1 enclosure). 800 gigs took 30 mins. Did the hot method, surprised it worked as this is usually a problem when cloning.

Just so you know, if you have Macrium v7.3 free edition, it still works. Just disable auto-update. Although, you can still update it to version 8 before disabling updates.

Disk Genius Free works very well and has a ton of partition tools built in. Now that Macrium and MiniTool no longer support free transfers (cloning) it's a great program to have. PLUS it will transfer to a smaller drive as long as there is enough space on the target drive to accept the transfer. No more equal or larger drive size required message blocking the transfer, even the Aomei Partition Assistant I bought would do that. So Disk Genius Free will be my GoTo for cloning and monthly Incremental System Backups, cause it's easy to do. Thanks for the very informative video.

I Want to say thanks Mike. this honestly saved me when I was stuck installing a brand-new SSD in place of my old SSD. I followed the instructions and cloned my old SSD onto already installed HDD and from there onto the new SSD as my pc only had room for one NVME M2 slot. no joke I was stressing out trying to fix it on my own with other guides till I tried this.

Hasleo has a PE partition option for a recovery boot menu, tad annoying having a boot menu every boot however there is a BCDedit work around EDIT(1) there is a checkbox work around in Advanced System settings also I was too lazy to look 😫. EDIT(2) hasleo does clone & backup too tbf I have never used it to recover but cloning works

Hi, Mike. What I have for cloning is a Sabrent USB C Docking Station. It clones M.2, 2.5" SSD's, and 3.5" HDD. So, no software needed.

quick tip, if your old mobo doesn't have an m.2 slot, you may have an extra pcie slot available and can get an m.2 adapter for it. Even the 4x slot is capable of 3000/mbs. much faster than sata!

i use for years Samsung Data Migration. Free to use software that only work with Samsung SSD. I have 3 Samsung M.2 SSD'S and this software works perfect. It creates a snapshot "clone" of the current situation. 2 time's i needed the clone for repair. I make a clone every week, sometimes an extra clone in high-risk situations.

Cheers - I haven't heard of this one before. The big disadvantage most of these type of programs have is it will copy over the windows partition (great for backup only) and make it bootable, but forgets about (or won't allow) the other system recovery partitions to be copied as well. This seems to copy everything over. I'm keen to give it a try as I have a few PCs I'll be upgrading soon.

Macrium Reflect free is and will continue to be available and fully functional after 2023. It just will not be supported / updated. It continues to be the best alternative allowing for mounting and exploring backup save sets and is a great option if you cannot afford $50 per year per PC for the paid version.

I did exactly the same as you, but ended up with a cloned ssd drive that wouldn't boot (0xc000000e error on a bsod). I couldn't manage to repair the drive whatever I tried, and ended up re-cloning - the only difference being I used the automated boot option. It seems to have worked. I suspect the reason for the failure is pretty obscure and probably random. I'm not that much of a techie to know, tbh. Any comments welcome.

M. Reflect Free is still available to use but will not be supported after Jan 2024. The October Update is the last Update for the Free Edition. As I read it, it will still be usable as a "EOL" product. It's being "Retired" rather than disabled. A bit like "Windows 7/XT" as an example. But it is good to know that there are other great choices! In fact looks a lot better!! Thanks.

Please help. I had two drives to move over to one new m.2. Moved the first one with the os on it and it worked fine, but now there is greyed out "free space" that I can't choose as target for the second game/pics drive. I can't seem to find any clear answer. Does anyone know where I can find out how to use that space?

create a new partition in the greyed out space, then do a disk data clone

Hello, trying to figure out how to back my drive to an image file? When I try the backup feature it asks for a file to backup to, it doesn't create a new one?

So, a bit more explanation about where the DiskGenius Program is to be installed in the "Select Destination Location" would be appreciated. My laptop only has "Drive C" to select as a destination to send it. If I select any location in my old Drive C, will the "Warning" regarding the destruction of all files actually happen? I ended up choosing the default folder in Drive C anyway and the program successfully migrated all data and programs on my old Samsung HDD to my new Crucial SSD. Your video had me take on this task with complete success. Thank you.

I would have liked to have seen this performed using the WindowsPE option. I’m wondering if you choose that option is it best to install the software on a different hard drive than the one you’re cloning?

it uses the Windows shadow volume copy so it isn't a problem

Strange that DiskGenius v5.5.1.x won't copy to a new disk without a formatted partition. But once I figured that out, seems like it's working perfectly.

Hi Mike, many thanks for that. Would you happen to know if DIsk Genius will clone to a SATA SSD target, connected and powered via USB cable? I handle a lot of laptops so there is rarely an opportunity to connect the target drive to the mobo. Keep up the good work! 🙂

So after I tried every other software that I could find for data migration/disk cloning and having limited success (only being able to boot in safe mode for 10 min without win.explorer crashing)[about 12hrs+] I almost gave up on this task and was gonna go to the local tech place(last time had terrible experience so I'm honestly afraid to ever get any kind of computer service) .I decided to try one last time with Disk Genius not expecting it to work ,my system is an older laptop running m2 128gb with the OS on it and 1TB hdd, I bought a 2TB m2 and used a m2 adapter since my laptop did not have any extra slots ,after the rather quick migration (15 -20 min) I decided to not even try to boot the new 2TB m2 trough the adapter(USB C) but instead I just swapped the M2 inside the laptop ,disconnected the HDD since I heard somehow someway the system could get confused ,plugged it back it and here goes nothing - It booted faster than ever with everything working perfectly! Thank you brother ,you really helped out a lot of people!!!
