I am a 60 year old woman, beginning golfer, with a double left arm shoulder replacement. I wanted to learn to play with my husband. I cannot even begin to express my thanks for this video, it helped me tremendously AND immediately. Watching it, it just made a lot of sense. I appreciate your thorough explanations and demonstrations. Thus was just beyond incredibly helpful!

Your teaching is the easiest for me (71 years old) to understand and follow. It' s truly good lesson for the senior ! I can tell without any hesitation that you are surely the best of the best instructors and teachers !! ( i just subscribed ) [memo] 비록 even if taking a closed stance, let my shoulder be parallel to the target-line (볼의 비행방향을 결정/좌우하는 것은 발/힙의 정렬선이 아니라, 어깨의 정렬선이다. 왼팔이 goes up 하게 하고 중력에 의해서 falls down 하게 하면 된다. gravity를 이용하면 된다) - 그냥 swing up and down 하게 하면 된다. - leading foot 인 왼발을 백스윙 때에는 떼었다가(off), 다운스윙 때에는 그 자리에 다시 붙이면(on) 된다.

77 years old and am hitting the ball with all the clubs better than I ever have done....Final piece of the jigsaw is that it has made me complete my body turn with my back facing the target which simplifies the correct downswing movements... Will recommend your video's to anyone wanting to take their game to the next level. THANKS SO MUCH...

I'm 67 and always getting hurt playing golf...shoulder, knee, wrist, elbow, etc. I'm on the hunt for a swing that's easier on my body. You've given me fodder for thought and something to practice on. I'm a firm believer that even though I've not yet found this easier-on-the-body-swing that I can replicate consistently, it is out there waiting for my discovery. Thanks for this video as it - and others - confirm my belief.

Possibly the best video I've seen for my senior body. I've been on the sod for 50+ years and the body is worn. Three key things in this video are the right foot back, the upright swing and the left raised foot. I would add a bit of a flare to the left foot forward. Brian Sparks swing is smooth but doesn't illustrate clearly these positions. Eager to try these tips once snow melts.
@WeeWillyII
@WeeWillyII 5 жыл бұрын
Reason I mention left foot flare is because of meniscus knee issues. The left foot flare aids in a better follow through for the knee challenged crowd.

Hi Van, I've just discovered your excellent videos and subscribed. I caddied for you at the European Tour event at Pula, Mallorca in 2004. I was teaching there (still am) and you arrived on the Wednesday with no time for a practice round and no caddie and all of the local caddies already taken. You played very well, easily making the cut and we went round with Ollie on the Saturday. I was highly impressed with your game and you only hit 3 bad shots in the 4 rounds, all 3 of them going left. All 3 times you were immediately able to make the appropriate correction and you didn't hit 2 bad ones in succession which is one of the hallmarks of the quality player. That would be a good topic for a video: how to bounce back after a bad shot and avoid those score destroying bad patches. All the best with your coaching career and I hope to see your name on a leaderboard again, maybe in a few years on the senior tour. Regards from Mallorca

Paul Kelly hi Paul! I remember you and Pula very well, tough little golf course. You did a great job and helped me out of a tight spot. Van Phillips Golf thanks Van I bet you do remember even though you've played thousands of tournament rounds. I've talked with tour players who have an amazing memory for details. You didn't say much during play but you you did comment on Olazabal. As you say his lazer irons were fantastic but he duffed a 9 iron on the 5th and left it well short. To add insult to injury while he was lining up the 30 odd yard shot he had left Marcel Siem whacked a 300+ yard drive up to his heels. He was fuming and knocked it well past and took a bogey on a short par 4. He then went birdie, birdie and that's when you said to me that's the difference between the great players and the rest of us: they can take a negative and immediately turn it into a positive. He used his anger and frustration to energize his game. He was a lot like Seve: he showed his emotions and played with tremendous intensity. I remember him cursing when he failed to hole a 20 yard chip by about 2 inches. He fully expected to hole it...

Really excellent points. However, one failing older and less mobile golfers have is actually getting their weight forward; they can plant the lead heel but the body hangs back and they hit fat and/or scoop. Even if you shift to the trail side then back to the lead side hoping the momentum of the swing of your arms will actually move your body forward you may still hang back. The great advantage of using your lead shoulder to control your lead arm (rather than the hand or arm itself) is that it will automatically tend to move your weight forward (try it, it may not work for everyone but I know it works for me and I would guess many others). You just have to make sure you keep your lead shoulder/arm moving; if you swing through with your lead arm then your swing low point will be brought forward, hopefully to in front of the ball. If you stop moving your lead arm when you get to impact then there'll be a train wreck.

Hi Van - from Hawaii, a big mahalo and aloha for posting this. It works. What I found I really have to be careful of, is taking the club to the inside, using this set up. I found myself twisting even more than normal and kind of injured myself doing that. Taking the club back along the shoulder line is imperative. The key you gave, is "no muscular effort" - keeping everything loose and soft. When I do that, the "fall in" happens naturally and all that downward momentum transitions to a long, buttery strike. Great stuff. I've also found that the set up works well, in miniature, for pitching and chipping.

I am returning to golf after a break of around 25 years, boy has the equipment and my body changed! (67 next birthday) I was a decent 12 handicap but now struggling to find a repeatable swing groove. I have 3 iron shot faults to overcome, pulling left, hitting out of the toe and skulling the ball. I am looking forward to giving this set up a good go to see if it kills or cures! I should add that my 40 year old Ping Eye 2 black spots are being retired in favour of a new set of Calloway Rogue iron and woods with softer shafts. I really did feel like Bertie Wooster with the old set!) good job I left the plus 4’s at home.

Carole Bolton I have tried some hybrids. I was given 3 Adams clubs: 4,3,2. To be honest I cannot even contact the ball with them. I generally top or toe 100% of the time with those clubs. The shaft may be much to stiff, or I am! I have a 40 year old 4 & 5 woods which I can more or less guarantee to hit off the ground ok. I used to hit a 1 iron 200 yards dead straight. I do plan to try the Callaway Hybrids again once I have this pull/toe/centre strike issue sorted.

Van, I just watched your video for the first time...I'm 79; you're saying to drop the right foot back 4 or 5 inches if you're a right handed golfer. To get a better back swing, however, when you hit the ball it looked as though you moved your right foot back 1 inch certainly not four or five inches

@vanphillipsgolf6651
@vanphillipsgolf6651 4 жыл бұрын
Sean Coxe hi Sean and thanks for your message. Pain must always be respected and if you have severe arthritis in the left leg then moving aggressively into it is not a good idea. Without seeing your swing I can’t give specific advice, however in extreme cases where it’s very difficult for a player to hold weight on the forward leg then moving the ball back in the stance a few inches with all clubs relative to your normal ball position and then staying very centred to even favouring the back foot a little bit through the ball (downswing) is an alternative adjustment that you might find enables you to play with less pain. This is obviously a compensation move but we can always only swing within the limits of our body’s range of movement👍

A friend of mine will sometimes aim down right side the fairway, pull his right foot back and hit a nice draw. I asked him why he doesn't do it all the time and he's afraid of how it looks. Should I give him a slap? ; )

I have almost came to the realization that I might have to just do range work, after I now have turned 69 and my flexibility has in my estimation, has reduced by 30 or 40%....I think I will practice some with these pointers and see if I can keep the ball in play, which may give me a few more years of frustration although enjoyment on the course.

Peter Flaherty hi Reg firstly I would get checked out by your doctor and secondly it sounds like you may be forcing things. That’s why I emphasise to use gravity and fall through the shot and only add muscular effort if you physically can.👍

Thanks Van. I infer from your answer that the lead and trail arms (and hands) should work together? Neither side dominates?
@vanphillipsgolf6651
@vanphillipsgolf6651 5 жыл бұрын
Gary Oltmanns downswing is less than 1/4 sec so it’s impossible to really not use them together, however as a feeling it’s good to focus on independent lead arm speed in transition and get it moving Asap👍

Van, I watched, and studied your video last week. Practiced once on the practice range and then played a round. Wow! I'm hitting the ball further and more accurately than anytime prior. I seem however to be putting more stress on my lower left back. Any tips would be appreciated. Many thanks

Sophia Siciliano hi Sophia I’m glad it helped your golf, however it is very unusual to get low left back pain as a right handed golfer (assuming you are?). Without seeing your move it’s impossible for me to say what might be contributing to it if at all. Make sure you have a neutral pelvis position at address and do not have too much lordosis (arching of lower back), get checked out by a doctor and swing within yourself until it gets better👍

I thought the same thing with the differences being the closed foot stance and the more vertical lift. I think these differences could make the swing more effective and repeatable for me. I will be giving it a go.

How do I get the hips to turn through impact if I start so shut. Blown out left knee. But not flexible either way.
@vanphillipsgolf6651
@vanphillipsgolf6651 2 жыл бұрын
Clearing the hips is overrated through impact. If you look at X2 world long driving champ Joe Miller for example, he hardly clears at all at impact and generates 150mph club speed. If you need release on the lead knee joint through impact you can do a walk through technique, by simply allowing the rear leg to walk past the front leg like Gary Player used to do years ago. This will relieve any strain on the forward knee. You must swing as your body dictates and always seek medical advice for any pain. No advice can ever work for all people all the time 👍

Just wondering on point 3. Is it ok for the lead hip to raise a bit. My wife , on her backswing, goes pretty vertical bit raises the hip up to help her get back. You don’t seem to do that.
@vanphillipsgolf6651
@vanphillipsgolf6651 5 жыл бұрын
Tom Miehl hi Tom, it’s more functional if the lead hip goes down slightly in the back swing, but it is way more important to get a bigger range of motion than to be technically perfect so if your wife achieves the range with a little hip raise that’s fine. Fluid motion is more important than ‘positions’👍

Hi Van, This was amazing....I've tried it several times and increased my driver distance noticeably with little effort!! However, I struggle with my irons and can't seem to get control of where the ball goes--I seem to cut it and it goes right or pull it and flies left. Any suggestions as to what I am doing and how to correct it? I love it and want to continue with it because I can see the difference in my increased distances when I do connect. Irons are a struggle, though.
@vanphillipsgolf6651
@vanphillipsgolf6651 4 жыл бұрын
char s ball start direction is nearly all club face orientation at impact. People are way too focussed on body movements mostly and never actually practice controlling the angle of the face. So do just that and go to the range with an experimental attitude and for 50 balls do nothing but try to consciously open the face through impact (slice) for 3 balls, then try to close it (hook) for 3 balls until you have finished all 50. Before each try do a slow practice swing and feel/watch what needs to happen with your hands to either open or close the clubface at the impact zone and also what it feels like to come through square to the target. If you practice this way consistently and stop trying to hit it straight every shot when you have no clue at the moment how to control the face, you will learn to be way more skilful👍

@@vanphillipsgolf6651 Thank you, Van! I tried hitting a few balls as you suggested before my round this morning--until it started to pour! But, you're absolutely right-- I can feel the club face angle a little better and it has helped! I will diligently practice this. Thank you!!! I'm really pleased with the results--quite effortlessly and with quick noticeably, positive results. How about any tips for short putts? Is it purely mental?

Fredrick Beckman hi Frederick, as we are making generally small swings for chips and bunker shots and generating power is of no use, then no, these changes in this video are for full or 3/4 swings where range of movement (power generation) is the main concern. Check out my website where you’ll find loads of great short game videos👍
