Alex, it is late on a Saturday night. I am a 74 year old male who has some back issues and struggles to get swing speeds with my nine iron above 65mph. This afternoon I was talking to my friend, a PGA Master Professional, about my lack of swing speed. He knows my swing very well and told me, again, I was losing leverage during the down swing, mostly in my wrist set. He told me before about flaring out my back toe which didn't help that much. I watched your presentation here and heard the technique of pulling the back leg back a little to give oneself more clearance. I jumped up and went to my little "indoor range", set up my swing radar and started practicing the swing with those adjustments. The very first thing I noticed was a definite improvement in the the swoosh sound being more in front of the ball and much more distinctive. After about 10 practice swings I turned on the radar. Swing speed jumped 10-15 mph with about 20% less effort(it got to 83 twice)! That made me very happy. Of course it didn't happen on every swing but the more I practiced the technique the more often it happened. Now, I have to take it to an outdoor range and see what the real results are, but I am very optimistic I will like the new yardage and hope it will carryover to my other clubs. Thank you. And, yes, I will mention the back foot back factor to my pro.

This is very nice to hear. More speed - less feeling of forced effort. Wonderful! Keep going and yes indeed, use things that work for you and don’t always apply what you are told. Results and feelings are yours

A follow up report. I went to the range today eager to put the technique to a real test with full swings and real golf balls and real flight patterns. I am happy to report there was an improvement however inconsistent...it is new you know. I still had a tendency to hold on to the club through the impact zone resulting in pushes. I don't feel like I am releasing the club as well as I did last night at the indoor range with electronic numbers. I will say, happily, when I did strike the ball properly, I was one to one and half clubs longer. So, there is hope. The trick is practicing. The old saying "Practice makes perfect" is a lie. Practice makes permanent...perfect practice makes perfect.

I think this is probably temporary. the key is how you allowed the club to stop and stay in the same position in the backswing because you felt less stress, due to a larger hip turn. key on that!

Hi Alex, I am 67 years old from Malaysia. I watched your video for the first time today and that's after watching many many other guys out there over many months. You are the only person out there who mentioned about brushing the golf ball like it's done in tennis. Made a whole lot of logic. Can't wait to go out to the range and try it as I have always been smacking the ball flush with no distance.

Great video! I am 71 and have struggled for years with coming over the top and hitting at the ball. I took a video of my swing 2 days ago and was horrified watching it. I started swinging a club in the livingroom while watching your video and amazed how free the swing felt doing what you said to do. Going to the range later to start working on this. Thank you for making this video.

I just discovered AOSG and really like what you've been saying. I'm an 80 y/o golfer who shoots anywhere between 79 to 99 (this season) on any given day. I'm still trying to regain some of my lost distance and tend to swing too hard and get the inconsistent results that you spoke of. This swing tip is so simple and I can't wait to try it in the backyard, the range, and on the course. Thanks for a great video - not too complicated but good simple advice.

Alex, I definitely fall under the category of rushing the downswing. It seems that my mind tells me "OK, you're at the top of the backswing so let it rip". I feel that this is the only way to increase my club head speed. A day or two after watching this video I decided to go to a heated outdoor range (it's January and I live in Wisconsin so it's quite cold) and just work on flow and smoothness in my swing while trying very hard to control that top of the backswing anxiety. I was surprised that my driving distance actually increased on average by 16 yards. The swing felt so effortless and I could actually feel the weight and mass of the driver head as I released the club. Incidentally, my swing speed went up about 3 mph. Thanks for the great lesson, it really does work quite well when I control my anxiety to want to mash the ball from the top down. I have to convince myself that the swing is a sequence in it's entirety rather than just from the top down, this was the key discovery for me. Smooth is fast. Thanks again!

Best instructor on You tube by miles Alex! Your explanations on ALL your blogs are easy to try out as you keep it simple and to the point! I - even at 70 years of age have always tried to hit the wee ball 300 yards off the tee and am sure many at my age have tried this throughout their golfing years! This past week I have created a shorter backswing with no white knuckles showing and just insuring I swing with the hips first towards my intended target with arms and torso following behind! We old guy's never had video tuition in our day's, so we are late learners in Finding a rare nugget like you who has taken and given thought for us old yins! I take my hat off to you Sir! It’s so funny man! When I was a young man my Grandfather (who was a scratch player) could easily outdrive me and hit towering iron shots. I was pretty strong in those days and could never figure out why I couldn’t outhit my Gpa when I’m 25 and he’s in his 70’s. I think you’ve finally explained it in a way my hard head can understand. I’ve got a few drills of yours memorized for the practice range and I’m hoping to see some real improvement. I normally shoot in the mid to upper 80’s and now at age 59 I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks you seem like you’re really passionate about teaching and sharing your knowledge.

Very nice. I like that you mention Harvey Penick….my favourite! Your instruction is worth trying. At 62 I’m getting a bit stiff. I have achieved better swing speeds slightly differently. I allow my hips to turn a little more by letting my left foot come off the ground so that I can get behind the ball. This has given me phenomenal results with my woods….I use a 3 wood to a 13 wood 😂. But I’m still trying to hit to hard with my driver with sometimes poor results. Let me try your method. Thanks Alex.

Alex, have enjoyed your videos this morning. Senior golfer here, single digit handicap. I believe I've come to my "game-changer" swing adjustment, similar to your keeping the club face moving longer in the backswing towards the target, but through a slightly different method....one I've seen tour players promote. That is, to begin the weight transfer towards the target BEFORE you have completed the backswing. This has been great for me, this "coil" action, allowing for my left arm to drop into the inside slot consistently at impact and with much more power ... would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks, Robert

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Alex, many thanks for your prompt response - appreciated. Yes, the video you linked captured what I was referring to as my new (and god sent!) coil move; and right at 7:20 of your video. Really amazed how the swing really flows so naturally and powerful once this pelvic move is made... the emphasis, for me, is (again) to begin the move as the backswing is in motion, before completion. Great stuff, your emphasis on simplifying the golf swing...

Very detailed and simple explanations like your video on coiling rather than turning. Coil is a word that suggests power better than turn. In addition I love your explanation of the split hands drill because it slows the arms up and allows the body and arms to synch, extend and the wrists to unhinge naturally. Hi Alex just watched your driver for seniors video from 2 years ago, looks like just what I'm looking for , it's a mental thing as much as anything for me as I do try to hit it that bit harder with Driver, off to the Driving range hopefully keeping my swing smooth and simple Many Thanks - Garry B in Manchester

I took a lesson yesterday from my PGA teaching pro. I am 75 with a very short backswing but I still hit driver 250ish, and 7-iron 150ish. Right handed, and I've been hitting fats and thins. Pro told me that, because of my too short backswing, I need to allow my left wrist to cup (which I've been fighting - trying to get the flat/bowed left wrist), and to set the wrists almost immediately in the backswing. Also, need to narrow my stance because that will make it easier to turn through to the front leg. Well, it is so hard to make that radical a change in the backswing motion. I may be able to get more lag with that cupped left wrist but my body just wants to transition in a huge hurry - and that hurry tends to make me hit/downswing (irons) with too much weight on the back leg - leading to more fats and thins. I'm Starter at my local GC and I see MANY seniors with a lousy pivot - or almost no pivot at all. I see almost NO seniors who swing with that "down and under" look on their downswings that the younger guys and gals do with ease. I wish I had learned the golf swing before I turned 50.

Never too late! But don’t get too bogged down in minutia. Good is a lot more reactive than most people allow it to be. Allow the weight of the club to swing rather than manipulate. But keep at it and enjoy the journey;)

Thanks, Alex! I think I got the same result yesterday by just feeling the right wrist go from extension to flexion through impact. The seemed to get the arms to be straight at the right spot and get me to turn through better. I think my tendency has been to hold the right wrist in extension through impact instead of releasing it.

You basically gave me a private lesson without having to pay for it. I am guilty of rushing the downswing and coming over the top. Every so often I hit a really great drive so that keeps me going but I would love to be more consistent. I’m 69 and rapidly approaching 70 and play 2 times a week. Thanks for the lesson.

Thanks, I gave your tips a try and hit “ straighter and with good distance”. At 65 ,my mind wanted to muscle the shots. The 10 o’clock take back was more than enough to get a 225 - 250 yd drive. Trusting the weight of the club proves to be the key to better golf, for me. Great video, thanks!🏌🏻‍♂️🎯

He's also had back issues for many years. Although I must agree that in his generation of players, he had the sweetest swing that every amateur wanted. He was, at 1 time, the longest driver on the tour when he was known as "boom boom" & that's when drivers & fairway clubs were still wood. The "Big Easy" Ernie Els has the same type of effortless looking swing, producing a lot of power. I'd take either of those swings eight days a week.

My issue is how to get speed where it needs to be rather than 6 feet before impact. I don't cast from the top & don't roll my wrists but get no woosh after impact so I'm obviously not building speed from the top. How is it done without pulling the club down & swinging too hard? I'm not purposely using only my arms.

I find the perfect backswing position at the top. I have spent hours standing still at the top and feeling the position. Because of this I never rush the downswing. When practicing I will often stop at the top for a second and then using the weight of my arms let the club drop down to the ball and accelerating through at the last second. Its a great feeling, it feels both effortless and very powerful all at once. I swing slow like tia chi to make sure I have no kinks that would cause injuries and zap power. I love hitting the sweet spot during this effortless slow swing and watching the ball carry 300 yards straight down the middle. Problem is that its too addictive that I dont spend enough time practicing putting lol.
