I LOVE this series so much. Just as a tip for any LARP alchemists or healers... if you LARP with people who frequently neglect their electrolyte intake (looking at you, shield wall...), get some vials and pour a couple flavors of those sport drink concentrates into them. Now you can plop a splash into some water to rehydrate your patients and it looks cool while you're doing it. I used these to create healing potions that fighters could bring out on the field with them.

Even more extra! Add a pinch (really, a little goes a very long way) of edible food glitter (the same stuff used in cakes and bakery) and they'll give the impression of swirly magical potions! Totally edible and absolutely cool. You can also use water, food coloring and edible glitter to make a simple potion of staying hydrated that doesn't look like simple water
@christinegallo4983
@christinegallo4983 2 жыл бұрын
Another option is the powder kind, and maybe throw the glitter in with the powder so you don’t even see it glitter until it’s in the water, it’ll look even more magical

i literally have bandoliers of "Rejuve potions" when i do LARP, just a sports mix in a vial with a little water prepped each day. literally just hand one to whoever needs it (I always get the vials back, really good group), to just drop into their water bottles, or slam back for a quick top up.

I recommend either Tailwind or if sugar is not good for you Ultima Replinish. Both are balanced electrolyte replacements. Pedialyte is great two but it is premixed not a little vial you can add to water.

A great price hack, especially since it's fall now, is going to a local orchard. Many of the ones that sell their own gourds, will dry out the ones that aren't pretty and sell them for super cheap.

Great bottle! I know you were looking for a non Emerson breaking way to have hot liquids too, you should look into making a kuksa. Its a fully wooden cup usually used for tea or coffee. Sealed with a hardening oil like tung oil. Really can get creative with the designs too!

You might try making a traditional porron to go with it. It's a kind of drinking vessel with a very long, skinny, bent tube at the top so that when liquid comes out, it pours in a stream. This allowed multiple people to drink from the porron without touching it with their lips. Traditionally it's used to carry wine, but you can really put anything in it.

@NoJusticeNoPeace

@@s7121n9s It's usually hand-made from blown glass, but it ought to be possible using a gourd by making a curved spout at the top the same way smoking pipe carvers do the stems for churchwardens (the type Gandalf smokes in the LoTR films), gluing together long, thin strips of wood and then steaming the curve into it.

Ha! I’m literally smoking a Calabash Gourd Meerschaum pipe while watching this. Didn’t plan it. This just popped on my feed. Good luck. It’s no easy feat making an ebonite stem for it even if you get a meerschaum bowl already made. You’ll need a cork lining fitment and a mortise/tenon area for the stem. Most use a lathe to get a stem like that made. Love to see it though. The rocks is a cool idea for cleaning out the insides.

growing more gourds and the pipe project sounds really cool. Back in college my friends and I would use pomegranate juice bottles lol. I don't know if we knew what the gourds were or just couldn't get them but a good spray paint and some spackle to bulk it out and give a little better finish. Was a good way to make something passable when we all had no money and only a dorm to work in lol

The flat leather is liable to conform to the bottle's rounded bottom over time. To alleviate this, cut out a majority of the center of the leather, leaving a ring for the bottle to sit on. This will act like an infinite number of adjustable feet to keep it stable.

I was reading Paraffin wax lasts longer and doesn't leave a possible beeswax aftertaste! That said, this all is the perfect eco-friendly solution, especially if you leave out the leather. I've also heard of ostrich eggs being used! Though I'm unsure of the longevity or weight. Can't believe I've been sleepin on this possibility. More than half a decade and the best eco-friendly solutions I could find were stainless steel waterbottles with a slight hint of unfavorable silicone. This uses none of that, the leather can be left out, and looks so much cooler. I love it. Glad I stumbled upon this

I covered an empty plastic water bottle with scraps of leather (using E6000). The leather acts as an insulator - I fill the bottle with water and put it in the freezer the night before, and take it out before I leave. It slowly melts all day, and keeps the water nice and cold. If I drink all the water and there's still ice I just fill it up again. I made a holster from other leather scraps, with a belt loop, and a leather tie to keep the top of the bottle in place. But now I want to try making a gourd bottle.

I’ve always wanted one of thease since seeing How To Make Anything’s video on it. Tried growing some gourds myself, sadly due to unexpected weather patterns with me being a newbie in gardening it didn’t work out. RIP lil calabash. Anyways, good thing to note Calabash is poisionous so don’t eat the gourds once you’ve got them growing XD. Lots of things over all time have been made with them so plenty of crafts to do!

calabash is eaten some places! just be careful about growing conditions (over ripening) or improper storage conditions (temperature swings / high temperatures) which can increase cucurbitaicins, and maybe avoid drinking the juice specifically. Some cultures even cook with the leaves and seeds (Burma for example uses the young leaves and stems, Korea uses the flesh in baksok and bak-goji).
@KvisTwig
@KvisTwig 3 ай бұрын
also! growing tip, though specifically for the blight known as powdery mildew… I've been using potassium bicarbonate (the sodium in regular baking soda / sodium bicarbonate burned my plants and can make soil too salty for anything to grow in) to control it. It isn't necessarily preventative? but it does seem to help clean the fungus off the leaves as I spray 1 teaspoon per gallon on the plants every 2-3 days. of course this is just one (of many) option(s) if you aren't keen on using an "inorganic" fungicide (scare-quotes because i took chemistry and understand that the term organic refers to carbon based compounds, perhaps it would be better to say food safe / less potential environmental effects?)

Tip: If you want to see if the inside is clean and clear of debris, instead of running a finger in, which only tells you how clear it is down to your finger, you could use a torch to light up the inside, and see if it's clean. Maybe putting the torch on the outside of the gourd will light up the inside? Of course if you want to be "authentically" SCA, you could use a candle and a mirror to reflect light into the gourd.

I don't LARP but we do Halloween and keep adding accessories. Being diabetic with a mild aspartame allergy I tend to bring my own mint tea (sweetened with stevia) to parties and events. Our most common theme is something magical like brownies, fairies, elves, and even wizards this year. Now there are other things interspersed but I an say over the years those have been the most revisited and thus we have improved accessorizing. While it is late for this year you have inspired me to add a "bottle" to use and fill my horn or mug depending.

This is a really cool project, but I'd recommend if you're ever doing this in the future you should make the base out of wood and dish the bottom surface out. That way if the surface you place it on is uneven (like the ground, if you're taking it on LARPs) the dished bottom will prevent it from rocking around even better. It's a trick you see on the base of some chairs and a large variety of drinking glasses.
