What would be a great idea is if your tea set was self contained for a journey or something. Like maybe have a way to secure the cup as a lid and then mount the whole thing to a bag on the go or something.

@@SkillTree my thought was to slightly elevate your Concho, and maybe adding to the spout form the outside by soldering a small lip. Then too wire loops on your cup. Loop one over the concho, then press the other over the spout! Probably not water tight like some are talking about, but a nice way to keep the set together!

Cool project man, Argentinian here. Just wanted to clarify some terms, because we really are a bit complicated. The drink is called "mate" not "yerba mate". Yerba mate is the name of the herb that is used for the infusion ("yerba" is an old Spanish word for "hierba", herb). The recipient from which the mate is sipped is also called mate. Anyways, as always, awesome content. Cheers from the south!

@Skill Tree the main concern related to the use of fully cured epoxy resin as a food container is identical to the concern surrounding other plastic items that hold food, BPA leaching. A hot drink does increase the amount of leaching compared to a cold drink but many containers also use plastic with BPA so if you are replacing a plastic container your consumption of BPA doesn't change. Additionally as this device would only be used a couple days per year the increase would not be a problem, mostly because we are constantly consuming BPA all the time and have bee since the 60s
@Taurusus

I love how it ended up! As you were making it I was just thinking how awkward it might be to drink out of (particularly for hot stuff) given the inward angle of the lip, so I think you made the right choice to pivot. I can imagine if you'd planned from the beginning to make the teapot, you could have sized the rings to kinda slot in together so your lid is a little more secure. I'm pretty excited about that scorch marker though, had no idea that was a thing, got some research to do!

Really neat little set. Those gourds are really versatile. I'm concerned about the metal rings you used along the rims, though. Unless they are food-safe you may end up with metals like nickel, lead, aluminum, etc. leeching into your drink. Also, your beverage may heat them up while you're drinking, which gets pretty uncomfortable on the lips (I know this one from personal experience with a camping mug I purchased a while back).

For getting the perfect circle for the twisted wire, wrap it around a pipe of the desired diameter a few times. After a couple wraps, the circles will be more concentric and you can get more in one go (similar idea to making the rings for chain mail).

just found your channel the other day and have watched a few videos so far, i love all these little projects and tidbits! one thing i will mention about the epoxy not sticking is that you did sand the aluminum but not the gourd! should always lightly sand both surfaces, especially organic type stuffs as stuff like the gourd has that waxy/woody outer surface that's meant to be non-porous, it's almost like trying to glue something to glass!
@jakeaurod
@jakeaurod Жыл бұрын
A good idea, but I have a couple observations and suggestions. First, hot liquids make metal hot, which can feel uncomfortable against one's lips. Second, using two metals, steel and aluminum, might create a unwanted galvanic reaction. Third, if you wanted to make a pitcher, maybe leave the upper part of the gourd so that you can tie handles in the neck like you did with the water bottle, and; fourth, you can carve a spout. Fifth, you can create a set of cups by using the tops of several additional gourds, and; sixth, you can use the bottoms of those additional gourds as jars with lids of cork and/or wood for holding dry herbage for teas, tisanes, and tinctures or other sundry items.

so awesome and fun as always!! of course i have some thoughts on the functionality/practicality(feel free to ignore lol): Gourds will eventually decay, polluting your water, even faster so with hot liquids. maybe one could seal their gourd with preservatives of some sort? i know it was cured, but i wouldn't want to drink hot tea out of that without at least a filter. There's not a lot of insulation in a gourd, so your drink likely wouldn't stay warm for too long. not much to be done about that though, i think. using a scorch marker probably compromises some of its integrity(what little it had) so it's good you didn't do too much of it the cup and pot don't seem to fit snug together, so you wouldn't be able to bring a drink on the go, and definitely not heat over the fire, but it is a lovely home set.

Bro. As much as I love when you plan something out and then execute it, watching your idea evolve was one of the most satisfying videos I’ve ever seen. I’d still love to see you do a gourd where the top part becomes a cup that also seals to the main body. Perhaps an internal neck that slides into the mouth of the smaller cup? And attaches to the larger vessel, but can still be detached. Just an idea. Also, on your leather projects, have you ever thought of edge lacing? It looks super clean and adds strength and durability to the edges. Keep leveling up, you.
