This is my first dormancy experience with VFT. I live in PA. I have mine in my basement. It stays between 35 and 47 degrees Fahrenheit. I also have 2 Barrina full spectrum grow lights above them about 2 feet away to replicate the sun being further in the winter, and have the timer on only for 8 hours to replicate less photo time. All the long leaved traps have died off and I have cut them all off, and they have grown short wide leaves since then. I only water them once every 2 weeks now. I do not let them sit in water. I also water them with cooler water as to not excite the roots with warm water. They all seem to have basically frozen in time. They do grow, but EXTREMELY SLOW. I have been watching one of the newest traps on a B-52 since early November. It is now mid to late January and the trap still has not started to grow the teeth. Also All the black and dying traps due to dormancy have stopped. I haven't cut any old traps off for over a month now. I hope this works and the 27 VFT plants I have come back in the spring. Now to look up how to get them out of dormancy.

Thanks for the video! I have a question about fungicide. I have seen some people recommend using a fungicide on the plants when in the refrigerator.... do you only need to use it if you put them in a ziplock bag? I kinda want to put the whole plant with pot in the refrigerator when it gets too cold for it to be outside... im new to plants and don't want traumatize it by unpotting ... do I still need to use the fungicide on him if he is just in the pot kinda free and open in the refrigerator? And do I need to somehow get him a grow light in there? I live in New Jersey so it definitely gets below 20 (f) for a month or so... I love your channel and thank you so much for all the information you provide ❤

@@liquidsilver1941 in general, keep the soil less humid than usual, but not dry. For Fridge dormancy you might want to keep some humidity with ziploc bags and add water when necessary.

@@DarkMoon3693 VFT don't need light under 5c during dormancy. Whether you keep it in a pot or without a pot during dormancy, it is recommended to repot every year. But according to the FlytrapStore owner Matt it is actually better to repot it every nine months. Edit: If you are good with your watering method, fungicide is not needed. Gently touch the soil if it's moist or wet. If you have it bare roots or sphagnum moss wrapped, even if the plant grow root rot you can just trim off the rotting part the plant will bounce back. VFT will always show signs of stress. If you want to add fungicide to your plants in a pot it won't hurt either. The choice is up to you.

@@DarkMoon3693 Thank you! And congrats on your plant I recommend using fungicide regardless if the plant is potted or not. Its an extra precaution, just to be safe (: Also, no light is needed in fridge dormancy.

hi so my method of doing refrigerator dormancy is putting the pot and plant itself in a plastic bag then just putting it in the ref making sure the soil is atleast moist. that part is easy for me but people recommend fungicide to make sure there are no molds growing. the thing is my family and i are saving and we cant really buy any fungicide. is this method okay even without using fungicide? please leave suggestions or comments!

Hello, im actually a new owner of a VT and have been growing them since the last 2 weeks. i have a few questions. (1) when should i start making my VTs dormant? should it be when its a year old? or when it starts to sprout its iconic look?. (2) how do i make my VT dormant when i live in a tropical climate and have a constant 20-35 celcius all year round? and i don't have space in my refrigerator, should i just look for a unused room with no sunlight? (not sure if it makes it cold).

Thank you for your tips and tricks! I live in tropical climate, and I have my VFTs in the garden under direct sun light, with about 9-11 hours of sun light. Can I put my VFTs directly into fridge, or should I put them under indirect sun light first and slowly reduce their "daytime"? But to be honest, the gradual light reduction seems impossible for me due to my working hours.
@venusflytrapworld3 жыл бұрын
It could definitely help, but most dont go through that trouble. You can just transition to the fridge immediately.
@jesusmalverde50642 жыл бұрын
Dormant flytraps will survive in a fridge. They do better with natural light year round. They don't always lose there leaves. In winter they just start growing a lower ground hugging trap roset of leaves so continue to photosynthesis all winter. You can also shorten the photoperiod without the cold. I've seen KZbin videos and articles about that. Apparently the shorter days are more important than the temperatures.

And what kind of fungicide do you recomend? Also how do you prepare them to go dormant, do you simply put them in the fridge whenever or is it better to decrease the sun light leaving them by window or something? And how long would you leave them inside the fridge? Can i put them in the fridge without taking the plants out of their pots?, help! im scared my venus traps won’t survive😞 please tell me what should i do

Generally, 3-4 hours is low for vfts, 6-8 is a minimum for them to stay healthy. Maybe consider a plant light to supplement lightning

Not a dormancy question but could I feed a trap a mealworm (of proper size of course) diet when it’s indoors. Like in the hot weeks above 100 F or when I’m not at home and prefer to leave it inside. Basically can I feed flytrap a one insect diet or does it need to be varied?

I live in Cedar City, Utah, USA and it snows heavily. I just got my first Venus Flytrap and I plan to put it in an east-facing windowsill, so it gets fairly chilly and gets a moderate amount of light. I keep the room humid (I also have Cattaleya and Phale orchids that benefit from humidity) but I will water sparingly. Does that sound OK?

New subscriber and new venus fly trap owner. I know that setting off their traps drains their energy, however, my curious kids set them all off and knocked the pot over in the water tray. So the pot was on its side in the water tray with about 1/2 of water with all traps set off over night. I didn't notice until the morning. Will it survive? Or how do I know if it will not survive? 😔

I thought about doing the fridge method or putting him in our outside storage.(there's a thermometer out there that keeps it from going below 40 degrees as where I live it drops below zero sometimes) But I read some where that they still need light even in dormancy. During rainy season the VFT will constantly get rain on and not much time for the water to go out of the soil before the next rainy day comes. Ps. Even if someone has a greenhouse or grow tent outside, eventually it will run out of space if the VFT is taken good care of.
