Going into winter many people are confused about dormancy and whether their plant is dying or not? Is it? Well let's find out!

This is SO helpful! Thank you :) I noticed on one of my plants, that got mites before going dormant, one of its traps was deformed. It was labelled 'dionea mix' when I bought it, so I thought it could just be a weird cultivar thrown in there, like the alien one, as no other traps were like that - but I think now it was being that badly affected by the mites!

Doing the fridge method you mentioned me trying out. My flytrap doesn't look like yours with that many leaves most have died off but it doesn't look completely dead like some of those pictures either. The center still has a few new leaf sprouts that never fully grew out and it has a very small bunch of baby traps growing off the side. Nothing has either grown nor died since I've placed it in the fridge. Looks like its in suspended animation now hopefully its gone dormant and not nearly dead

I also find it’s kinda normal for the plant to make some wierd deformed leaves/traps near the end of dormancy. After dormancy it should grow back as usual, if not, somethings up (probably the soil)

I'm new to this. I got my Venus in Dec and growing on kitchen window sill. It has grown 3 new traps. I'm now learning it's supposed to go into dormancy. So do I move it to a colder room and how often do I add water? I gave it a meal worm for food and those traps are now turning black. So did I kill it? It has three little ones that look good. I feel so bad now.

So what's the difference between these plants and other perennials like hostas or daffodils? They die completely to the ground in winter and coming bouncing back in spring. I'm creating an outdoor bog garden and expect the plants in it to go through the same winter sleep.

Water Prop Babe I treat with azoxystrobin before dormancy (if you’ve seen the “crazy growth boost” video of mine, since it is a fungicide. Typically people use sulfur. That won’t do anything for algae or pest moss on top of flytrap pots. For that I just remove the top layer of sphagnum and replace it.

I’m very busy and have hundreds of plants I’m growing (if not thousands at this point) so I leave them for weeks, potentially the whole winter and just spray with fungicide if any mold outbreak happens. I would expect a normal person with a few plants to remove the leaves every 3-4 weeks. Usually there’s only 3-5 black leaves per month if you don’t let the work pile up.

Will the tap water that was left for several nights kill venus fly trap?
@TheBonsaiJungle
@TheBonsaiJungle 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. That just concentrates the minerals even more. You have to capture what evaporates, not the stuff that’s left behind. That’s why distilled water works because the steam that gets caught and cooled down back to water has almost zero dissolved solids while the water left behind in the still or the pot has all the junk. Just imagine the minerals like big ass rocks still in the container because they function almost the same. You gotta separate the water from them, either with a good filter or liter distillation machine.

I rescued 2 Venus fly traps from a Walmart. They were both packed tight with sphagnum moss so I decided that I would repot both of them. They look really floppy but I don't see any yellow leaves. However one of them is not eating and I was assuming maybe it was still in dormancy. If in fact they are dying, can I still rescue them or should I let them go?
@TheBonsaiJungle

Kim Szalay they plants being sold from stores were kept too warm to be dormant right now, and also in poor conditions (like low light) which makes them unhealthy. The best thing for those plants right now would be to get them under strong LED growlights.

It can mean a lot of things. Most of the time it’s journal shedding if it’s just one or two leaves. If there’s more it can signal a rot issue, or hard water damage. Hard to tell without pictures or a detailed history of the plant over the past two or so months.

I have a healthy Flytrap entering dormancy right now. I keep it outside on a window sill that gets a bunch of direct light. Where I am, DC region, is starting to get kind of cold. Can you put it in the fridge? or a garage? If brought inside your house the temp change is going to heavily influence it to start growing again. If you don't mind DIY set ups you can seal off a window with a insulated box and crack it open a slight bit to keep the flytrap colder than room temp.

@@masonholly1056 Here's what *I* do: For VFTs, in mid - October once the plants are well into the start of dormancy I drain off excess water from the pots, hit them with a SULFUR based fungicide and place in zip lock bags and pop them in the fridge for 3 - 3 1/2 months. I occasionally check them (once a month) for fungus and hit with the fungicide if needed. Late winter around February 1st I take them out and clean them up, repot any that need it, hit them with SULFUR based fungicide again and place in a south and west window and some under florescent and white 'daylight' LED lights until night time temps. regularly stay above freezing then slowly acclimate them to full outdoor Sun. I've been using this method for 13 years with no losses.
