Really nice - here’s a tip: whisk up the dry ingredients BEFORE you add the wet. That way you ensure everything is evenly mixed and don’t have to overstir.

My Mom used to make these when I was a girl. My sibs and I tease her, that she was not a particularly accomplished cook, but as she retorts (good-naturedly), "You didn't starve." This was one meal we always looked forward to.

Made this- Halfed the recipe and still came out with 8 cakes. COVID related substitutions I had to make- Grinded popcorn down for the cornmeal. (Coffee grinder and sifted until it was all fine) Vinegar and Milk for Buttermilk Used 2 really small local eggs Getting the temp right for the skillet was the hardest part, but happy with the results- Ended up with what I would call a cross between cornbread and a pancake. Very good, very filling, will make again!

I made these today and they were great. I used oat milk instead of buttermilk and they were still really tasty. My 2 year old is a really picky eater and she devoured these pancakes. I don’t think I can go back to regular pancakes 😆

We have a old recipe of adding into the batter just before cast iron pan cooking, frozen chunks of cheddar cheese and pre-cooked sugar sweetened crispy bacon. Referred to as "Loaded Hoe cakes" or "Drunken Hoe cakes"

Late to the Party; These are dated back since Early Slavery, this came across the water and was thought to be poor people's food, but of course like usual, it's now a hit. WOW LOL Just like all other life long skills that came, not from an institution but from true skills passed down. This really raise my brows when someone says that something initially started in the 1700's - 2000's. My Ancestors made this cake and when I was a small child going to grade school, teachers would look down their nose when you ate this type of foods and consider you poor, but now their children, grand-children, and great grand children are now making content, money, and wealth from taking this and other things and staking their claims. Sound similar to the Black Gold. I give you praise for liking it and presenting it as content, but please give credit where credit is truly due. Thank you!

Easy to do. My mom added 2 eggs and less meal. And they are called hoe cakes because...men and women chopping peanuts or cotton in the 18 & 1900s would make a fire at the end of the row and the hoe cake and sweet potatoes were baked in the coals on the blade of a clean field hoe made for chopping weeds... These hoes were almost 6 ft tall for a man with a blade 6x8 inches. Easily accommodating a cake. It would also be possible that foeld hands would carry a spider...a flatish cast iron pan which stood up on legs perhaps 1.5 inches long to sit in coals.

Maple syrup is the condensed sap of several tree species in North America so you can't really make it on your own in Brazil, but something like honey or a fruit-based syrup should be a reasonable substitute.

Now I may get some backlash for this comment. But, I HATE pancakes, but I tried your recipe (because I was curious about hoecakes because true blood mentions them, and I recently watched a video on the united states presidents favorite foods, and a lot of presidents seemed to like them). So, long story short, I tried them. And I'll definitely eat these, but NOT pancakes!!
