The easy way to program the classic "hoover" rave synth - also known as dominator or mentasm - originally derived from the "What The" preset on the Roland Alpha Juno keyboard.
Ingredients:
1) Sub oscillator (triangle, or square)
2) A buzzy oscillator one octave above the sub (PWM square, or 2 detuned saws, or unison saws)
3) Another buzzy oscillator, another octave higher (as above)
4) Optional: subtle white noise (don't need this if you're using unison saws)
5) Optional: chorus (fast rate, medium depth, similar to vibrato which you can use as well/instead)
6) Optional: pitch sliding (can be portamento, pitch envelope, an LFO, or any combination thereof)
7) Dreadlocks (they help, honest)

Pretty good! I'm die hard juno, as you mention the alpha juno can do things that no other jupiter, juno, or indeed any other analogue synthesiser can do due to pwm and env mod. It remains my best analogue synth of all time. However, you created a work around which is impressive. Most hoovers these days are using a sample which I produced for future music mag when I wrote the review. Can always tell when somebody is using that sample because I stuck it through a Roland boss se 50, which added slight multi effects. Interesting video. Thanks!

Awesome, I'd love to know more! Where can I find your sample? Was it published on floppy or CD? I've contributed to Future Music as well (around ~10 years ago).

If only every tutorial for the synth was like this. It's incredible to have an explation as to why a certain knob is tweaked instead of "we set x to yy%..." the biggest of ups

The way you explain the synth process is helpful. You explain the nature of the sound & the origin + you’re transparent about the variables and you don’t just suggest an arbitrary setting to copy.

Thanks a lot! I was considering buying an alpha juno just because of this sound... But then I found this! Awesome, man! In the 90's besides the Gabber stuff there were a lot of jungle/breakcore records where you would hear on nearly every track a hoover combined with an Amen break, haha.. Greetings from Germany..

Really nice tutorial with some fun facts in the beginning, thanks! However, the break down of this sound is not entirely correct. The main oscillator is a square with pulse width modulation. The second is a saw, 1 oct above main, with pulse width modulation (which gives the original it's unique sound). The third is a sub oscillator, 2 oct below main, which is a square with a little bit of pulse width (no modulation). Top it off with some noise and chorus. That's how it's done on the alpha at least. :)

It's the same kind of sound but the alpha Juno only have rectangles waveforms for the sub and I don't remember if it used the square PWM but I am pretty sure it used that weird PWM saw that only alpha Junos had on the main oscillator.
@OwenTheGeek
@OwenTheGeek 5 жыл бұрын
You're right, I made a mistake! The Juno only has square subs, indeed. Also, yes, the PWM on the Juno is a little odd, but essentially non-critical to the creation of hoovery sounds. Thanks for your comment!

Good tutorial. Historical note, though: on the original Alpha Juno patch, it was done with PWM on a SAWTOOTH, which you can also reproduce with Serum.
@OwenTheGeek

Indeed, and I might be more concerned with those kinds of details if I was actually trying to faithfully recreate the original "What The..." preset. My aim was more to mimic the sampled/resampled "hoover" hits of later generations.
