I am 33 years old and live in the US and currently earning my bachelor’s degree in General Business and Communication. This are my emphasis areas. I visited South Korea in April and spent almost 2 weeks there. I loved it. I had a bit of a culture shock and felt a little out of place there because I looked really different than everyone. I think all this is mostly because of my anxiety getting out of my comfort zone. Although, visiting Korea by myself was a really big step anyway. It was my first time on a plane and my first time out of the country. I was born in Turkey because of the military so I flew from Turkey to the US but that’s it. Haven’t been on a plane or out of the country since birth. Lol Anyway, my point is, I want to go back to teach English. I am actually trying hard to graduate sooner than I wanted which is stressful but it’s something that will get me to Korea faster. I graduated from community college in December 2019 with my associates degree and now I am going for my bachelors degree. I’m currently in my first semester and taking 4 classes this summer. I want to graduate sooner which is why I’m doing summer classes instead of just fall and spring. Hopefully I will get there one day ❤️🇰🇷

I keep swinging back and forth between "I should do EPIK to get into Korea and just accept I won't know much of anything about where I will be" and "I will just do all the work/research on private schools/work with recruiters so I can pick where I am and be sure I'm not in a shady spot" I really liked the outline about the visa process (outside EPIK), its pretty much the same but hearing it was nice. It is testament as to how desperate they are for teachers when they only require z native speaker with a degree in ANY discipline. A school should insist on a teaching certificate. I've worked with graduates/tourists who walk into a school to 'teach' purely on the fact they speak English...and trust me, it shows. It will be hugely beneficial to you and more importantly, your students, if you have a TEFL certification. A reputable one, NOT an online or weekend course (useless!)

Thank you! This video really helps me a lot! I‘m not a native English speaker but I will find a way 😅 I‘m still attending university but I‘m studying to become a teacher (living in Germany) for English and Spanish, so I know that teaching is my thing 😄

Oh so it's basically impossible for a non-native speaker to teach in South Korea or maybe you need to have a certain degree or something..can someone explain how it is for the non-native speakers

I feel like it's pretty easy to get opportunities to teach in south korea if you are a native english speaker, but if you are not that is almost impossible... I really like your videos and I hope I will be able to teach abroad too in the future even though I am not a native english speaker.

Aw you posted this after I already found a position. I applied on company sites and with recruiters. I put in a preference for Busan but may be open to other places.

I'm an Indian and hence a non- native English speaker. I've done my whole education in English. But there's an agreement between India and South Korea (as mentioned in EPIK website) that Indian citizens also must have a teacher license in English. But still now I haven't found out which document works as the license and how to get one. I keep on searching various courses if that's equivalent to it.

Question: Are you allowed to have someone else live with you? Since the school pays your housing. I’m currently going for my bachelors and your journey intrigued me, but I’m curious if a significant other joins me if they’d be allowed to live with me or if that’s against rules.
@adriennehilll5 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of people doing this so I don’t think it’s an issue!
@HaileeAdelia5 жыл бұрын
I've done a ton of research on this, and it seems like it isn't a issue and it IS possible, BUT keep in mind that if you are both teaching that there has to be two job openings either in the same area or at the same school so it may take longer or narrow your options!

Ty so much!!! And I’d be the only one teaching since he isn’t and doesn’t plan on going to college. Ty for the info and amazing video Adriene

They won't prioritise putting you together. Most (even married) couples I know are separated by quite a distance. Most couples that live together applied to hagwons that would accept them or work at international schools (they do package deals with couples/couples with kids).
@KassieJane5 жыл бұрын
@@ameliarose47 Just wondering if you and your S.O is married. if he has no college education and no plans to teach, there's no way he can get a 1 year-long visa unless he accompanies you as a legal spouse.

what were some of the requests you demanded when deciding which school to teach? for example, did you demand to teach a certain age group?

I've been wanting to be a teacher for a really long time. Last year, I moved to the UK to go to University there and I just finished my 1st year of Uni. I'm studying English Language and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign language). Luckily for me, my university allows to study one year abroad for year 3, so I'm really hoping to be able to go to South Korea for at least one year to test the water and see how I like it there. Honestly, my hopes for actually teaching in Korea are high and I hope that they do come true! However, I am not a native English speaker :(
