We adopted our 5, sold our big house in suburbia, moved to an old farm on 26 acres. We now raise rabbits, sheep, chickens, pigs and grow much of our own food. We all learn at home and our kids ferment, preserve and do many wonderful things with our food. I agree 100%. Best life ever!!

You give me confidence to take on my mess. We moved to this house four years ago and the grape vines were lying on the ground, and had been for awhile. The first year we brutally chopped them, and had no fruit at all. Probably didn't leave any knuckles! I love that term. I'm ready to give it another try--though I'm still afraid! lol We are in WA, so it's time to do it, but not too late. I didn't prune last year at all due to the lack of fruit the year before. The vines are no longer on the ground, but they are seriously twisted from who-knows-how-long on the ground. I'm taking some cuttings this year to start a fresh area (better suited) and plant grow them up an arch.

My neighbor has wonderful grapes growing over his fence into my yard, and I wanted to prune them in a way to both control the foliage, yet have lots of grapes. Thank you excellent video, I’ve just planting 3 🍇 few months ago they are doing well. I was wondering about pruning when I ran into this video and subscribed. But how does one get them started to get an established branch since the beginning or when? Do you have a video for planting or when do I first prune, do I prepare a main branch immediately or until when? Please advise, I noticed the plant has several small branches not just a main one but I’m not sure if too young. You are correct in saying the technical wording and drawings are confusing to a person like me. So I was about to give up,
@57Vlada2 жыл бұрын
I am glad you did not give up Martha. As for when to prune new seedlings, I would suggest to let the new plant get established during the first year. You can start pruning during the second year when you can also choose which growth to nurture and which to remove to form the plant....I hope this helps. By the way, I am glad to have you with us on this channel. Cheers, Vlada

My grapevines are young and I allowed the vines to get a little wild while the roots and cordon is establishing to give them plenty of energy from the leaf canopy. I'm using the lower cordon style and training the new growth to the top. Today, I saw buds forming and went over and hacked off all the recent growth leaving 2-3 buds near the cordon and tied the vines to my support with a tape stapler.. Overall, I think your explanation of pruning grapes is easy to understand.. I'm also working on regenerating a 50 yr old vine by cutting it back hard to establish the framework lost from decades of neglect.

@@julientobyfullmer7230 I used a tall container and potting soil. 4 cuttings per planter. watered them 3 or 4 times a day. it was shaded area. I also used sand in a cut of gallon jug. Great video. Thank you for not using excessive technical, advanced terminology. After all, people who seek advice are on this site because they are not experts. Experts who understand deeply technical verbiage will not be on instructional sites. I spent time in California acquiring real estate used for developing easement and rights-of-way for utilities from Mexico to Canada. In dealing with vineyard owners and growers, I made every attempt to learn growing techniques. Now retired, I am growing muscadine grapes, which are native to my area (southern Louisiana). Many sites bombard viewers with technical terms that are, of course, foreign and/or confusing to beginners. Now retired and owning acreage, I have time to devote to growing fruit trees, grapes and lots of annual vegetables as well. My intention is to grow several grape varieties as my skill and knowledge increases.

Hello Vlada, I'm in the California foothills about 45 miles east of Stockton, CA, about 37° north latitude. I have 5 grape plants with abundant vines. They were pruned terribly when I bought the house, the garden worker just cut everything down to the stump. I didn't even know there were grape plants ( 10-15 years old) due to the fact that the grass was so overgrown that they were invisible to the eye. I have since let them grow as is, after a less than normal rainfall winter season. I had plenty of new growth vines re-establishing them selves. So, I bought some pressure treated 4x4 beams, in order to run galvanized cable across the 40 foot length if the 5 plants. I ran two cables through them for the whole length, drilling holes in the posts so the cable could be tightened. I harvested about 4 bunches of these varietal table grapes, that's all. My question is: it's late October now, there are still leaves on the vines. When should I start pruning them in the way you demonstrate here. The average rainfall here in 18-20 inches a year. It does not show here and the soil has a lot of copper ore and some iron, as it is kind of orange. I hope to get some better abundance of grapes this year. The temperatures here now are upper 60s/ low 70s..at night in the 40s. In mid-winter the temperatures drop to the 30s. Once in a while we have a freeze. Thank you for a reply, my name is Frank

Hello Madame good day and compliment of the season. I am happy to have watched your video and I love it. I just planted six plants of seedless grapes and I seriously need a tutorial like this right from the basic information you can give me as a beginner. Thanks so much for your time.

Thank you Vlada! So happy to find your video, easy to follow and to the point. I live in Arizona and our climates are different but I wanted to ask you when is the best time to start the pruning and also what type of fertilizer do you use & how often do you fertilize?
@57Vlada Жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your note. I would suggest you start pruning you vines at the end of February, early March. As for fertilizing, I usually do compost in November or December and 30-30-30 fertilizer at the end of April. I hope this helps.

😁..."Grapes are sour"...as soil of our country isn’t good fertile soil for cultivation of sweet grapes. However, nice to see your video & informed many things on grapes farming. Also good to see your channel banner depicting "Pinot Noir" grapes.
