All though you use flannel fabric, i In a way these quilts remind me of the Chenille Bedspreads that were so popular back in the 50's and 60's. Ive always been very fond of the chenille bedspreads with all their fluffy patterns. My gramma used them for years. I want to make a very large rag quilt as the top layer of my bed dressing. I think it would fabulous used this way. I have a queen size bed with the 18" deep matress. I love to layer up my bed with many blankets, quilts and bedspreads that coordinate and compliment the color scheme. I think I will make pillow shams to layer the top layer quilt as well.

I love the idea of not having to cut squares. I have made several rag quilts but I want to give this method a try. I want to try the larger one. How many yards of each layer do I need to buy?
@TheCraftyAuthor5 жыл бұрын
Taianne Newkirk - I purchased the WIDE flannel from Joann’s and purchased 1 yard of each. It made a perfect throw size rag quilt. If you’re going to purchase regular flannel and piece them together, I’d recommend 2 1/2 to 3 yards of each. Happy quilting! 😊

@@TheCraftyAuthorAuthor, thank you for the quick response. I know this is a dumb question. I am new to quilting. How would you piece them together?
@TheCraftyAuthor5 жыл бұрын
Taianne Newkirk - That is not a dumb question. Here is the link to the first video I made, that has more in depth instructions. This quilt has no piecing in it. I suggest starting smaller when you’re first starting out. Get the hang of it and then move on to a larger project. Here is that link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4PYmop9rZZqqrM

I want to make one of these with 100% cotton with batting. Will this method work with this fabric and the batting? Thanks so much!
@TheCraftyAuthor5 жыл бұрын
It would work with cotton and batting, however, I’m not sure about using this method with batting. I haven’t personally tried it yet, but would like to. I think it might be a bit tricky though. I’ve only used batting with squares that I have cut, quilted and sewn together. 😊
@ninablackman87525 жыл бұрын
If you want to use 100% cotton batting on a rag quilt you have to cut the batting smaller than the fabric squares then quilt it in the middle of the squares to keep it from shifting. If you include the batting with the seam then snip it the batting probably would not do well in the wash. I made a rag quilt with 6 inch squares and used flannel as the batting so I did not have to quilt it. (Three layers of fabric.) It turned out well. If you wanted to do a big square like the tutorial, just use three layers of flannel. The middle layer could be white or a complimentary solid color.

I’ve made about 15 rags quilts of all sizes and shapes. The best technique and easiest on your washer is to dry 1st, wash and dry. This 3-step method is way easier on your washing machine. (Use old, clean tennis shoes or tennis balls in the dryer.) PS I had a friend who ruined her washing machine because of rag quilts. There were too many threads on the loose, ha.

Hi, if you wanted to monogram the centerpiece, how you you go about doing that?
@TheCraftyAuthor5 жыл бұрын
Anna- It might be a bit difficult to monogram the centerpiece due to the method used on this rag quilt. However, if I were going to attempt that, I would make the folds where I want them and then choose the center point on that front piece of fabric. I'd put stabilizer on the back of the center square and then do the monogram. You would then put the quilt together just as I have shown in the video. I hope you are able to do this. If you do, please share pictures because I would love to see it! I think you'll just have to play with it and give it try! :). Happy Quilting!

Okay can you use a zig-zag stitch when your doing the 'No Cutting Squares' ?? Thought, it would workout well for the edges.
@TheCraftyAuthor5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer- I haven’t personally tried the zig zag, but I’m sure you could. I would just make sure that you shorten the stitch a bit so that it will be a little more steady. 😊

How wide is this quilt and will it fit a twin bed? Thanks so much for this video, I am looking forward to trying it.

This quilt measures 40x60. I don’t think it would fit a twin length wise. Please make sure that you use the WIDE FLANNEL or plan on piecing to make the desired size. 😊 Happy quilting.
