Shoutout to everybody old enough to remember what a physical “b-side” was.

I loved that part of the song. "Time to play 'B-sides'" sounds like 'besides' but means something special to people who remember 45s. And I recall that this was a b-side song of another of their popular singles. I would have been so happy to buy this as a single, two great songs for the price of one!

I owned, and still have about thirty 45s. I listened to this song since 1980 or so. I had the Fire of Unknown Origin LP. It literally until 2020 or so and watching the video to realize that it was "b-sides" rather than "besides".

I remember one time years ago I saw BOC playing this song and Buck Dharma stopped playing his guitar to mime turning a record over with his hands while he sang that line. I guess that even back then they knew that many people didn't understand what he was singing.

@@tomgorman748 Regardless of how he meant it, aside from about 1% of their songs, BOC would not be considered easy listening. I think it's humorous how hearing a BOC radio hit gives both Brad and Lex the impression that all of BOC's songs are like this when the reality couldn't be further away.

Blue Oyster Cult (formed in 1971) often deals with the darker side of Science Fiction & Fantasy in their lyrics. They are described as being a Progressive Rock Band for Intelligent People. You will want to take a deeper dive into exploring their work from 1971 - 1981 (before their decline from line up changes). Blue Oyster Cult is a very talented Rock band that knows how to structure their songs. On top of that, their lead guitarist is Buck Dharma. It is rumored that Jimmy Page (of Led Zeppelin) was in awe and a little bit intimidated by two other guitarists. One being Buck Dharma, and the other was Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull).

The album that this song is from was recorded as a movie soundtrack. The group was asked to do one song for the animated film Heavy Metal, but after seeing an early cut of the film they wrote an entire album. The only song used for the film was the cut Veteran of the Psychic Wars. Which is a really good song and you should give it a listen.

This fantastic song was put to good, suspenseful, creepy use in the 2010 horror movie "Let Me In" (Chloe Moretz as a chilling child vampire). A film equal parts surreal, brutal, tragic, and introspective, this BOC song was played over a stretched-out suspenseful part as a haunting contrast to what was happening on screen...excellent choice for an excellent film. I only began to appreciate this song, and BOC's music overall, after learning guitar myself in my 20s. The main solo, and the shorter ones in between the final choruses, are simply awesome.

8:52 I wonder if Lex is talking about "playing to the band," where regular audience members don't get it but musicians who know about the technical aspects of music are impressed by what a particular musician is doing. There are some musicians who do crazy things with key changes and time signatures and such that make a song difficult to bop your head to but will make other musicians say, "man, how did he do that??? That's incredible!!!"

The great thing about BOC is that they have such a varied catalog. If you want easy listening try "In Thee", or "I Love The Night". If you want a more classic rock / progressive sound there is "Burnin' For You", or "Don't Fear The Reaper", or "Shooting Shark", or "Perfect Water". If you want a heavier sound try "Heavy Metal (Black and Silver)", "Shadow Warrior", "I Am The One You Warned Me Of", or "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars", or the entire Imaginos album.

I think you guys totally nailed it with your various comments about this song, it's all of those. I love how well the lyrics in a great with the song structure and the two are symbiotic oh, that's the art of writing a great song and arrangement. And yeah, I loved the reference to the famous Rolling Stone song in the second verse about time. Ain't no time on my side. The Rolling Stones song is, time is on my side. And it's got this insistence feeling of this guy is just on fire for this woman, burn out the day, burn out the night, I don't really care, I'll never have a home anyway and I'm just going to keep burning for you. And they are definitely Rock but yeah voice record has always had that smooth quality about them but you have to understand, this was a very loud band. If you want to get the full effect, why something so smooth can still be Rock, crank it up to your ears bleed in headphones sometime and you still won't get the feeling of being at one of their shows. You can feel the subwoofers punching you in the chest and also they were known for their laser light shows, which was cutting edge technology at the time. For something a little less smooth, and to me one of their greatest songs ever, check out Godzilla. It is so fun!

The thing that attraced my brother Ray (aka "Wizard") to BOC back "in the olden days" was the twin-lead guitars of Eric Bloom and "Buck Dharma" (aka Donald Roeser). We were working out the guitars to "Reaper" when Ray was killed when a druk driver turned left in front of his motorcycle. Rush was our favourite but we loved bands that had that multiple lead guitar sound. "Hotel California" is one that we worked on one entire summer when we were at school (#GoDawgs #GoZags) -

BÖC have done so many great songs, like. Then came the last days of may, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, Astronomy and M. E. 262 They have also done one of the best live albums, On your feets and on your knees

These two are just cool folks period. You'd want them at any party you had. Brad who's a thinking man who can have interesting conversations with, Lex would be bouncing around, being her usual bubbly fun self putting grins on everyone's faces. Just good company hands down.

This song is from the '81 album FIRE OF THE UNKNOWN ORIGIN, it was the last BÖC album that was really great. Don't get me wrong, they still rock, but they were younger then

Why I love this channel is Brad and Lex compliment each other well. Their angles are usually so different that they sometimes surprise each other. Very intriguing and fun. Great stuff for this rabbit hole app.

Brad said something about playlists or just listen to the album. That's getting at it. Albums were constructed to fit together. Great albums fit best, best songs, best structure, best relationships or moods. Blue Oyster Agents of Fortune is a great album. I would suggest listening to more of it (eg Vera Gemini)

It's not what you would call easy listening, but it's a pretty smooth, laid back track for B.O.C. Easy listening is like a synonym for soft rock, or really light R&B.

I think they were meaning easy to listen to in the literal sense. No the genre of easy listening. That’s like elevator music

Try "Astronomy", "Nosferatu", "ME-262", "Dominance & Submission", "Mirrors", "The Great Sun Jester", "The Red & The Black". BoC is severely under-rated and influenced MANY rock bands who followed them.

And in this song, they make a reference you're probably not familiar with, as it's from the day of 45 records, which were small vinyl records with two songs on them. The main release would be on the A side and would be the song that the record companies would push as a hit. The B side would contain a more throwaway track that was often used to just get people to listen to another song by the artist, to maybe get folks listening to more of their music, since they bought the 45 single anyway, right?

Highest charting single and album for them. George Martin produced album. More radio friendly album made for the movie "Heavy Metal' but never used but 1 song so released as a BOC album. You cannot categorize this band. Listen to "I Love the Night" "Golden Age Of Leather""Cities on Flame" "Then Came The Last Days of May" "Dominance and Submission" and a Jazzy song "Monsters"

Thx! In the mid-70s they played in Norfolk. Incredible light show! At the time I thought boc was psychedelic! Genre means what family does this or that belong to. In hindsight I now see boc as popular music or “Pop!”

Curious, do yall know what he means when he says, "time to play B-sides"? In to olden days we had vinyl records or cassette tapes that you had to flip over to hear the tracks on the other side. A-side and B-side. Artists usually put their best tracks on the A-side so B-sides were more eclectic and less popular. So you could says that taking time to listen to B- sides was the old version of what yall are doing here and listening to music you're not so familiar with.
