This was from 1972 from the "Demon and Wizards" album....one of my all-time favorite albums. Uriah Heep was an album band rather than a singles band. They didn't have many "hits", but a good one was "That's The Way That It Is" from 1983. That's one you might want to check out.

In 1974, RUSH opened for Uriah Heep. They were VERY influential influence at that time. Deep Purple formed in 1968. Uriah Heep in 1969. Both in London. Both are considered pioneers of heavy metal, hard & progressive rock. Deep Purple's drummer, Ian Paice, is on the list of all time greatest drummers that no one ever talks about. AMAZING! He's also a lefty, like me.

Yeah, pioneers for sure. As a wee lad of literally 8 or 9 ('72 or '73), I was given my first two rock albums: Deep Purple - Fireball and UH - Demons and Wizards. I'll always lump the two of them together as they were pretty much my introduction to hard rock and roll. They still stand as classics

@bobgorman… Correct!! ...Ian Paice is the greatest for me! ...The reason he stays out of the spotlight is probably because he's such a quiet guy. Most of the time, the more scandals someone makes, the more famous they become!! ... Ian Paice NEVER had a scandal, with drugs and the like! ...He still shows outstanding performance today (after 55 years)!!

@@JimGeigerMusic I'll agree inasmuch as even though I knew they grew a big regional live following early doors, I've always thought, once they got radio attention and a new deal, REO Speedwagon just put out mealy mouthed, middle-of-the-road, "Let's please the label execs, I just bought a house" crap. And it just got worse from there with MTV. *_Ridin' The Storm Out_* is the only song I'm willing to listen to now, and even that kinda sucks. I'm out after the first verse and chorus, with a bad taste in my mouth. Their '80s writing is eminently face-punchable.

Uriah Heep have a varied song catalogue and could be called (arguably) the first progressive metal band as their first album came out in 1970. Top tracks to check out the wide scope/style of their music: Gypsy (a heavy rocker from their debut album), The Park (a beautiful ballad from their second release, Salisbury), July Morning (an incredible epic from their third album, Look At Yourself), The Wizard (opening track from their fourth and most popular album, Demons And Wizards), Stealin' (probably the band's second most popular song), and Rainbow Demon (a strong deep cut from Demons And Wizards). Those songs are good starting points for the David Byron (vocalist) era of the band.

This is the magic of this channel. I'm 39, grew up listening to my mom's old Beatles records, and I thought I was pretty well versed in classic rock for someone of my age. I love seeing your fresh insights into songs I've known for ages - but occasionally you hit a song I didn't know. I was aware of the name Uriah Heep, but had never heard them until today, and I'm so glad I have. If I'd known of this song 20 years ago I'd have been playing it constantly. So yes, you're encountering new music because of your channel, but on occasion so are we - and that's the magic. Great job.

I'm 50, and still too young to have been a Uriah Heep fan back in their original days of the early '70s, but by the early '80s, I was discovering their music through the record collections of my parents' frienda. There are soo many great songs to get to from the early/mid 70s version of Uriah Heep: Lady in Black, Look at Yourself, Bird of Prey, Rainbow Demon, Gypsy, Firefly, Fallen Angel ... but they're just the path leading to their Magnum Opus of the day, a truly astonidhing tune called Salisbury. Salisbury is one of those songs that should be at the top of every 70s rock fans wishlist to hear.

@@johnstorton I disagree with Ken's statement big time !!! Now, I will admit that there was nothing that he played that I couldn't. But his style was very fluid and natural (unlike, say Emerson, as his stuff always cramped up my hands, fingers and wrists). But I grew up on Ken, Jon Lord, Wakeman, et al. I just really enjoyed playing his parts, and the snorting Hammond tone was always a blast to crank up !!!

Another in the collection was Woman from Tokyo by Deep Purple. Another classic of the era that brings back memories of playing records in my room pretending to be a DJ. Their best known song together with 'Stealin' but they have so much more in store, off the same album 'Demons and Wizards' from 1972 check out 'Paradise/The Spell' with an epic Pink Floyd-like slide guitar solo. For some real progrock 'the Magician's Birthday' or the 15 min. 'Salisbury' (1970). So many podcasters so just came across you guys. But as soon as I saw Uriah I had to listen. David Byron is one of the great voices in rock. Loved the Heep from 1970 their first 7 albums are super good.

Alex I appreciate your honesty-the thought you put into this channel is refreshing. Andy as well of course! Uriah Heep- Rush opened for them and one of the guys with the band nailed Geddy Lee’s slippers to the floor! Rush in the Farewell to Kings era-Kimonos and Marshalls

My very first concert. 14 years old, still many years away from my first high, my mind absolutely exploded. Watching this was a time machine. Thank you.

Love this song (for decades already👨🏼‍🦳) and it’s one of my favorites. Great album by the way. My most favorite Uriah Heep song is Lady in Black.

Heap on the praise, very underappreciated band of that era.

As mentioned before, UH is often compared to Deep Purple because of similar instrumentation and basically from the same era--heavy sound obtained by the heavy hammond organ playing the same riff as the guitar and sometimes the bass but UH has vocal harmonies--and lead singer Byron a different style. Byron is right up there with other vocalists of the era as far as talent, no back seat to Plant, Gillan, Daltry, better than Ozzie. For a UH vocals showcase do "July Morning" or "Circle of Hands". "Stealin'" is right there too and just general goodness. Lee Kerslake who passed not long ago is another under-rated drummer--he and guitarist Mick Box duel it out in the middle section of "The Magician's Birthday"--an extended track deep cut. Also one of the best rock and roll medleys you'll ever want to hear is on their 1973 live album. Lots of other good tracks as you've seen in the comments.

Thank you for finally doing some Uriah Heep! "Easy Livin'" is definitely a banger and I'm so glad you rated it A+! I would suggest "The Wizard" next...one of my fave songs ever. It's a bit softer than this, but it has some good social commentary ("Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts? For then we know we'd find we're not so far apart") "Magician's Birthday" is good, too.

An incredibly talented band that fit right into the heavy rock/prog sound I love so much (and is sadly too rare). David Byron had an amazing voice. You can't go wrong with any of their early stuff (thought their newer album Wake the Sleep is incredible). Some hidden gems of theirs are The Pilgrim, Magicians' Birthday, Suicidal Man, High Priestess. So many more to list...

Saw them mid-seventies at the Lakeland Civic Ctr. I was 14 and had no clue who they were but walked out as fan. Bought their albums the next day.
