This video on easy make resin casting box tutorial, gives a step by step guide on making a box to cast Dioramas, or use for casting larger pieces without having to spend a lot of money on a silicone mold. I make a lot of plastic resin boxes to use both in my resin work and when I am making silicone molds. They can be made large or small and in lots of different shapes. The method I use here is the simplest I have found to create a plastic resin casting box.

Hi Ty for your video. Is there something I can spray inside the casting box besides a silicone spray? Would Pam cooking spray work? Ty

Good tutorial. Does this pvc bend around an object to make a mould.? I have a flat wooden heart I need to make a ledge around so I can pour my resin about an inch thick without it leaking. I have been searching online for what the plastic is called. I’m not sure if it’s pvc or polypropylene sheets.

Im using styrene 3mm sheets. Easy to cut and easy to glue with glue for plastic models. The extra advantage is that it can be filled with water to calculate the volume of the silicone. Plus if you are careful you can pull it apart and reuse the pieces.

@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts www.amazon.com/Styrene-Sheets-White-040-7-6/dp/B000ZVHCJ6 Here is an example. Styrene is the kind of plastic that scale models are made off. You can glue it with glue for plastic models, which melts and fuses the surfaces of the plastic, so you can be sure that its waterproof. There are also brands like Plastrut or Evergreen but these are marketed exclusively towards scale modelling and you will pay more for less. The best solution is to find a supplier that can sell you big sheets. Im getting 1m x 70cm 3mm sheets for about 5 euros in Athens.

@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Im making historical miniatures. Mainly ancient Greeks. I decided to give miniature sculpting a go last year, and what do you know.. I actually can sculpt pretty ok lol. It helps that I have an art background to be honest. Now the molding part is much harder to me. There are not alot of info for molding so small and detailed pieces and it has been alot of trial and error. I even made myself a DIY vacuum chamber to deal with bubbles.

I know this late, but for any one else looking for this answer, what I do is use foam board from the dollar store. You could use anything really, but what I do is cover it with clear packing tape. It's the same principle and works just as well. The silicone doesn't really stick to the tape, which has a huge extra benefit: you can lay down the sides of the box on the tape sticky side up. This way I can lay down what I'm making a mold of and have it adhere to the tape. I don't need extra glue or anything else. Which helps a lot in the fact I don't need to worry about silicone finding it's way underneath the object and having cleaner molds (especially if you're doing a two part mold).

Always struggling with different stuff to make a resin mold for epoxy. This is sort of thin/flimsy. I don't know if it would get out of shape when pouring.

By the way, a good trick for cleaning scissors when they start to get a bit sticky, use acetate. Sometimes people just buy new ones but if they are good scissors like Fiskars, you can easily clean them. I've been using the same pairs for over 3 decades and they are always sharp!
