The spark gaps act as simple pulse switch to connect each of the charged capacitors in a series, increasing the voltage base by the sum of the number of spark gap connections in the series
@jonathonhaberkorn2337 жыл бұрын
Not a mystery of physics. Just charging in parallel and discharging in a series.
@mxcollin956 жыл бұрын
Can you please explain why you have those gaps at each capacitor? I’d like to understand how this works but haven’t found any videos that clearly explain what’s going on. Would really appreciate some insight on exactly how Marx generators work.
@rafayqayyum39885 жыл бұрын
@Mathew Schau I think it's more simple. Like capacitors charge in series first and when they are all fully charged or enough charged to make current jump the air gap between they let their voltage out. So all of them shooting voltage at once
@godparticle38334 жыл бұрын
@@mxcollin95 it charges the capacitors in parallel which means it allows them to allow current through and charge in unison and once they are charged enough the voltage jumps the spark gap and because of the way the circuit is wired it discharges them in series adding there voltage together creating very high voltage and it does this in pulses

I want to build a Marx generator with 3.7dcv input voltage and 4kv output voltage
@asdqwe4468 Жыл бұрын
Step up your 3,7V first. I wouldn't go much beyond 10 stages in the Marx generator so step up to around 4kV. But that's still very low for a Marx generator. You can build 4kV power supplies without that. Rectified output of neon transformers or flybacks will do easily.

I came to the video to find out the physics part of why it inceaases the spark gap increases voltage to the next capacitor..:(
@benjaminshields94214 жыл бұрын
Capacitors store charge in an electric field by having two plates spaced apart from one another. The wider the surface area of each plate, the more charge it can hold. If capacitors are in parallel, it acts like a capacitor with a ton of surface area on its plates. In other words, it stores a ton of charge. The important thing in a Marx generator is how the ionization of air temporarily makes a normally very high resistance gas into a very low resistance one. In other words, it acts as a short when it arcs. The spark gaps serve to be a catalyst for starting the ionization of air, and also ends up pushing enough current and charge to short the next spark gap, so on and so forth until you jump the final arc.
@dougfoster4454 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminshields9421 yea but that doesn’t explain why it increases the voltage. Capacitors should only charge to the voltage of source right?
@benjaminshields94214 жыл бұрын
@@dougfoster445 I guess I forgot to explain that while writing how a Marx generator works. When a capacitor is charged, you can view it like a very quick release voltage source. So, the same principles apply. In parallel, the sources (in the real world) output the same voltage together, but in series, the voltages add up. If you connect both positive ends of two AA batteries to one another, and do the same for the negative ends, you would read 1.5 Volts across. But, connect positive to negative, and you get 3V. Let’s apply that here. The capacitors charge in parallel, all to the same voltage. If you got your gap length right, it’ll jump that first spark gap. If you look at the circuit diagram, you can see that this puts the first two capacitors in series, as the spark gap acts as a short(ionized air from earlier explanation) and the 1Megaohm resistors are effectively opens. So with these two capacitors in series, they now have double the voltage of the source, which is enough to jump the next gap. Now these three caps have three times the voltage of the source *if measured from one end of the first capacitor to the other end of the final one*. You keep doing this addition process until you hit the voltage you want.
