The Nikon Webcam Utility is still only a beta, but it is a very good beta. I couldn't find any bugs, and it works great on my Nikon Z6 and Nikon D850 cameras.

For those who are having a problem with the camera going off or goes to standby every 10 or 30 mins try to go to custom setting, the one that looks like a pencil and goes to C Timers/AE lock, and then go to Standby timer and monitor off delay go to live view, mine is c2/c4 and set them to unlimited or infinite

I just tested the nikon utility on my macOS Mojave 10.14 with Nikon D7200. Worked perfect! Nikon D7200 wasn't explicitly listed. Glad that Nikon came up with this utility plugin and I don't have to pay sparkocam.

I used nikon software in my d7200. But there's a noticeable lag and bit of heating issues. Do you have the same issue? Also not getting full quality, looks like 240p

It shows me a black screen with a text that says (webcam utility). My camera was in automatic mode. Solved setting in P. I do not know why but works in this mode. I hope it helps, I was frustrated until I saw someone with the same problem and other person brought the solution.

@@risingbeings Hi, it was a year ago, but, that was all. My camera was in automatic and the screen was black. I turned off everything and tried again with my camera in P (programmed automatic, I have a reflex, Nikon D750), and it worked.

Thanks for this, what are the settings on the camera (Nikon D6)? I've DLed the Nikon webcam utility, plugged in the D6, not seeing an image on computer (OBS or Zoom), in fact in OBS I'm getting a Nikon Webcam Utility logo, no live capture from the camera. Per other's comments, I have the camera set to Mode P, and have it on Video: LV. Thoughts on this?

Great tips. Thank you so much! This is so cool Nikon added a beta version to allow users to stream or use their camera as a webcam, but hopefully they can add support for higher resolutions. I still get black bars because the resolution currently maxes out at 1024x768. EDIT: I'm also using OBS, and apparently holding ALT and left clicking allows users to edit the black bars out.

I read in one article that if you do recording into your PC thru the apps, your Camera will not over heat for long period of time. Use a dummy battery so you don't have to change battery during recording. I haven't try this on my Nikon D500 but it works on my Sony A6000...just an fyi.

one other tip, if you use a z series camera, z 6 & 7 more so, you can add the MB-D 10 battery PACK, adds two batteries, giving you twice the battery life, it is small and it's only function is to hold a battery, no buttons, so the form factor is very compact, especially if you want to put it on a small tripod ball head! Importantly it allows those two batteries to be "hot swapped" that is, there are two doors, so as one goes down, you can still shoot as you change batteries, as the second one is on a different group, which the camera switches to automatically when they become exhausted.

Using a capture card is probably a better option for a number of people, because while people are working from home and considering using this as a webcam then most likely they will be using their work laptop and its a hassle to install the drivers.

Thanks. Useful video. The native Nikon utility is much better than the Sparkocam software that I have been using until now- distinctly higher resolution. I'm using the F1.8 Nikko Z 35mm and the autofocus is perfect - silent and fast to follow my face. The Nikon Z6 connects via USB-C not micro USB. All the camera functions work in real time - so changing aperture changes depth of field etc. I didn't notice much lag. It only sends the clean image, I couldn't see how to send the display function - such as settings and microphone levels etc.

This worked right away and gave a good picture, but I cannot figure out how to set the camera exposure and it is not doing auto focus. It seems to be all automatic. I had to manually focus. I am using a Nikon D500.

Great Video! Thanks a lot! "It's not a Canon or Sony, so you don't really have to worry about overheating here." 🤣🤣🤣 That's true. The Z6 and Z7 are great cameras and I never had a problem concerning any overheating with Nikon cameras. With the Z-series lenses focussing is much smoothers as with the D-series lenses and there is not so much breathing and they are a lot more quit. For video with autofocus I prefer the Z series, for video with manual focus the D-series is fine. And for photography both series are great cameras.

I have a Nikon Z5. I’m hooking it up to my MacBook Pro brand new computer. I’m getting a signal with the camera but I cannot get any audio to work on my computer USB Yeti mic,. I’m using PowerPoint as my recording slideshow with narration and WebCam style video. Question, do you know if PowerPoint works like the programs you mentioned? I know that the computers working when I go to the FaceTime with the in-line camera and the in-line mic on my MacBook Pro it works, but when I hook up the Nikon Z5 and my yeti mic, I can’t get no audio in PowerPoint .Thanks from Chris Samardizch.

Doesn't work for me either. Nikon D850. Just shows the Nikon Utility logo. The camera "freezes" some of the functions when i use the USB. Can't start the videorecording or use the LiveView screen. I've set it to video on the back, i've turned the auto-shutoff timer to infinity. Tried different USB ports, same problem. I use a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with macOS Big Sur 11.1. Is it a USB problem?

I'm using d5300 the webcam utility works with obs but at smaller resolution 600x400. In obs I had to scale up the webcam utility output. Which makes the image slightly distorted. If I use capture card its perfect. I want to use the nikon web utility so that the the pop out screen on my nikon can be turned off.

Totally unrelated to this video, but can I ask a question about your desk chair. I have the same one (Ergochair 2) and my arm rest does not slide backward, only forwards. I set it up as instructed but for whatever reason, I can't get the arms to reach anywhere close to the back rest. So essentially, my elbows don't have a rest unless I lean forward. It's annoying because in the product photos the arm rest goes pretty close to the backrest so I'm wondering if there is a way to slide the seat or backrest closer to the arms? I know, suuuuuper random but this drives me crazy.

Make sure you are using a quality is cable and plugging it directly into the computer instead of a USB hub will help. Also decreasing the resolution to 1080p should help instead of trying to use 4k

Are compatible cameras listed somewhere? I have a D5500 and all it does is displaying the application Logo and my camera screen keeps flickering when trying to start the video. It does let me select the camera as a video sources, so I'm not sure where the issue is.

On their webcam utility download page under system requirements it lists officially supported cameras. Unfortunately they have the D5600 not the D5500. Hopefully it will support more cameras in future releases

I have a desktop, not a laptop, but I am guessing there is no charge going on via that cable. Also, there is no need to set shutter speed, just to put the camera in movie mode and turn it on. It really drains that battery ...

It did the same for me. Finally, I made it work like this: you should set it into only one of the following modes while your camera is turned OFF: M, A, S, P. Connect your camera to your PC with the USB cable. NOW, you can turn ON the camera.

I was using my Z50 for a zoom meeting & after about 30-40 minutes or so, my image in zoom changed to a static image. I did have it on auto. Thanks for the tip on that. Any ideas as to why the video may have changes to a static image? It looked like time had stopped?

I would also use a cheap webcam for work meetings, but this is a much higher quality for people who want to stream live video or only occasionally need a webcam. I hadn't thought about the longevity before.

Hi there, I know this is an older thread. I'm trying to set up multicam options in OBS using the nikon z50 and z6. The Webcam utility seems to only lallow one camera use the software at one time. Is there a software work around for this, or have I missed something really obvious? It's not a big issue, I'm having to resort to using a HDMI video capture stick on one camera to enable multiple set-ups, which just means more wiring and clamping down.

Mine works fine as long as you use screen capture. In fact I have no card and no lenses yet. Just opened display/screen capture and video capture device. I have only NVME drives though so the drive speed may affect the recording

It can stream for more than 30 minutes, or if you record externally it can go longer than 30 minutes. That limit is only for recording internally

The settings are limited currently, that is the only video resolution it shows for my Z6. Hopefully this will be one of the things they change in future. One thing that could help is to change the color range to "Full", other than that I stick with Device default, because I want it to use the settings I set in the camera

Since this is still the beta version, there will be future updates that hopefully will include more camera capability. It is pretty disappointing how few cameras this works with

my camera seems to stop while I was looking up the setting and filter in obs, I haven't started streaming or anything it just it stops and freezes the frame

@@SanaraGtry to go to custom setting, go to C timer/AE lock, then go to standby timer and monitor, go to live view, mine is c2/c4 and set them to unlimited.

Doesn't work on Discord but for Skype it is ok. I just need to plug in my headphones with a microphone to include the voice. Or does the utility support voice too?

I ended up using my headset through my laptop for my voice audio and it output everything captured on my screen.

My nikon d5600 immediately stops live view when I plug in the usb. I followed the instructions above. Is there a setting I'm missing?

I've been struggling to figure this one one out and I found out about this after purchasing a capture card. The only thing to figure out now is how to manipulate the settings on the camera while the camera plugged in. Are we able to do this at all?

My Zoom says Beta Nikon, but I don't see the video. What do you have to do to the camera? Does it have to be on and on a certain setting?
