My Audi A4 Quattro is a B9 chassis with one of the easiest oil change procedures ever! With a few easy tools anyone can change the oil on their 2017-2019 Audi A4 with the 2.0L TFSI engine. Using the Mityvac 7201 or a similar pump means no more jack stands, ramps, and definitely no messes. Just pop the hood open and 15 minutes later you're done!
Oil Capacity: 5.2L (5.5 US QT)
Recommended Weights: 5w30, 5w40
Recommended Standards: VW 504.00, VW 502.00
An easy oil change for the Audi A4 B9 requires some preparation. The following tools and parts were used for this oil change how to video, I did substitute a torque wrench as no one really needs that fancy of a unit to do this job:
Mityvac 7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus - amzn.to/2N8lHih
Castrol Edge Professional LL03 VW 504.00 - amzn.to/2LmxWWs (6x)
MANN-Filter HU 60123 Z Oil Filter - amzn.to/2LqAdji
Wera 8004 C Zyklop 1/2" Drive Ratchet - amzn.to/2NQk3RY
CDI 802MFRFMHSS 3/8" Torque Wrench - amzn.to/2LqBDKE
TEKTON 32mm 1/2" Drive Socket - amzn.to/2N64033
TEKTON 3/8" to 1/2" Adapter - amzn.to/34CF7RV
ECS Tuning Billet Engine Oil Dipstick - bit.ly/ES3138259
VibraWipe Microfiber Cleaning Cloths - amzn.to/2Lp0IFZ
Majic Long Neck Funnel - amzn.to/2NSzpFH
I am an Amazon and ECS Tuning affiliate. Clicking the links above and buying anything will result in a small commission for me. Those commissions help me make content and maintain the channel.

Dude great job! Agree, oil and plugs are beyond easy for this vehicle and many other Audi/VW 2.0 engines. I saw the dipstick. I've asked 4 dealers in Los Angeles. All put the kabosh on the dip stick. I was hoping an aftermarket dipstick was an option. It goes against everything in my bones to rely on a computer to tell me the oil level in the engine. Anyway, looking forward to many other reviews. Clear and simple. 2018 Audi A4 P+ Quattro

I did my B9 oil change at 1 year/15,000km with the oil pump method. Audi say 2 year/30,000km... They of course don't care if you have engine repairs after the warranty expires.. Note: I'm in Europe and my A4 B9 Allroad 2018 has no dipstick.. Save money and buy two 5 litre Castrol Synthetic oil each time (you always need just over 5 litres at each oil change and having some for top ups is a wise move.. Normally there is a 1 litre pack with your new car.. My 2.0tfsi has consumed zero oil over 27,000km.. More videos on the B9 maintenance would be good.. Thanks

Interesting that it's 2 years in Europe. They tell us 1 year here. I heard somewhere the euro regular A4 B9 had a dipstick, but maybe it was erroneous, good to know and thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!

my Audi B8 Facelift (2015) also hasnt a Dipstick (Europe).. But there are 2 ways that Audi offers. Normal oil change period (15.000 km) and long time period (every 30.000 km). Dont know much about the difference, I guess the long time period is for people who drive alot. But therefore you need special longlife oil. I have the 15 000 km period but I also use longlife oil from Castrol and its totally fine :) And its not normal to have a dipstick in the newer cars (at least in the audi cars you have to pay for it). But if you know how much your engine needs, its easy.

Great video. Very to the point. I'd be interested in more B9 maintenance videos (like the spark plugs you mentioned). In regards to pumping the oil out, do you know of any disadvantage of using the pump to remove the oil as opposed to letting it drain out? I know the drain plug can be annoying to get to since it's tucked away behind a bunch of plastic pieces, so I like the idea of pumping out the oil.

Hello, thank you for the great video!!! does the pump also remove the sludge build up at the bottom of the oil chamber?
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting and I"m glad you liked the video :)! There should not be significant sludge at the bottom of your pan if you're changing oil frequently. The pan will have hot oil in it and modern oils have detergents in them. The only cases where you see significant sludge is diesel oils that are not frequently changed as diesel is very dirty and diesel oil has much more detergent in it. The other case is petrol engines where the oil just doesn't get changed. Some people just don't understand it needs to be done. Sometimes you see a car with sludge in it because the oil hasn't been changed in 40K+ miles. If you're talking about varnish, the browning of the pan and other parts of the engine, then that is just normal aging. Ultimately the process doesn't matter, what matters is that you change your oil on time based on manufacturer recommendations or known best practices developed over time for an older engine (especially diesels).

The pump will not empty everything. I would recommend to do the hard way (classic way) and lift the car and empty the oil to make sure its empty.
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Max, it empties everything since the factory fill amount gives a perfect reading. The computers in these cars can be very picky with oil levels. Whatever milliliters might be left in the pan don’t make any difference when mixed with the huge volume of fresh oil. The most important part is maintaining the factory interval schedule per manual. Dealer service centers have been changing oil this way for a long time.

You can leave it in while driving, it goes to the oil pan like all normal dipsticks. They just don't include it because I guess they think people don't change their own oil anymore and the digital sensor will warn them if they run low so they don't have to check.

Hello, thanks for the video! Super easy to follow. I did have a question, my 2018 Audi A4 (B9) sticker says to use VW 50800 but owners manual and Audi online says to use the same one you are using in this video. Which do you recommend? 5w-40 or 0w-20?
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I believe 2018 was a transition year to 508 (0w20). To me 5w30 makes more sense in hot climates. As i recall in 2018 0w20 was factory fill and 5w30 is optional. I would recommend confirming with the manual in case you missed something or by asking audi support.

Is this the Ultra model with the B-cycle engine? AFAIK that's the one that is 190hp, the normal Otto cycle 2.0TFSI is 252hp, like the one in my video. The B-cycle engine as I recall needs 0w-20 oil with a 508 certification. So I would change it out.

Good question Tom. Primarily I prefer this method on vehicles which have an oil filter accessible from the top, especially cartridge filters like this Audi B9. The reason is that it is very clean with no real risk of significant spilling. Plus you don't have to take the time to lift the vehicle. If the oil is warm and it's parked level, you'll suck it all out very quickly. It's also how the dealers do it, it's easy, fast and there is minimal cleanup. Some cars that have side mounted spin-on filters work well too since the anti-drain valve on the filter should prevent a spill and the oil adapter/cooler its spun onto is higher than the pan.

Will it work for Audi A5 (F5A) 45 TFSI?
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Dawid, I'm really not sure as I haven't worked on that car. However, this method (pulling oil out of dipstick tube) is pretty ubiquitous, most dealers do this on most cars as it's less mess than the drain plug. The biggest advantage is if the filter is at the top, then you don't have to lift the car at all, but either way less mess.

@DmitrysGarage

Yea you can, it's just messy and takes longer. My way is how the dealer does it, they just have fancier pumps. These cars are perfect for extracting oil since they have a cartridge filter up top, it's my all time favorite design. I find it annoying that you have to lift most cars to do the most frequent maintenance task.

Thanks for watching. I can understand if you have no tools it would be quite expensive to get started. This is really geared towards DIY owners who likely have all these tools minus maybe the pump, since the other tools are pretty standard if you want to work on your car. The pump very useful for draining/filling all kinds of auto fluids and the cost of the pump can be offset pretty quickly if your dealer charges what mine does. Plus it makes the job so fast, don’t have to spend an afternoon sitting in a waiting room. Id rather enjoy a beer while the pump whirls away :). I do agree though if you’re going to have to buy the other tools its a big startup cost and unless you plan on working on your car its not worth it just to change oil.

Every audi service center here does it this way so I don’t know where you work. What’s your main concern with this method? The process is documented in Erwin in the factory maintenance docs so clearly it is an acceptable practice since Audi/VAG literally document it. The filter picks up debris and you can, and should, cut it open to spread and check the pleats for metal. This car has a massive oil capacity. You see how much oil you take out vs put in so at most you will miss a thimble full which given the capacity is completely irrelevant. The drain plug exists because not every car owner or potential service center can extract oil.

WARNING: this pump only takes 80% of the old oil, and leaves the really nasty stuff in the sump. Do not use a pump - use a lift and sump plug.
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely not true. The correct amount of oil goes in not 80%. A milliliter or two that it may miss are meaningless given the massive oil capacity, we’re talking tenths or even hundredths of a percent of total oil. This is a method that has been used for many years now on cars with this sort of setup.

How much oil do you think is left in there? Do you believe all oil residue is removed if you use the drain plug? This vehicle takes 5.2L of oil, which is what I put in and it showed perfectly full. It doesn't make any difference if there is 10ml of oil residue left in the pan. It's entirely insignificant. Authorized service centers for most brands of cars prefer to suck oil out unless it is easier to go underneath. I can tell you that all the local Audi dealers do the exact same thing I do with the B9. It makes absolutely no difference other than being much faster, cleaner and easier.

$107 for the might vac. $100 in tools = $200 thats 7 oil changes. I buy my own oil and filter and bring ti to a shop and they do it fro $30. Tat is WAY easier than dealing with dumping all that oil.
@DmitrysGarage
@DmitrysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Most guys already own some version of the $100 in tools you're talking about. Do you really not own basic hand tools like sockets and ratchets? An extraction pump is all anyone would have to buy, the Mityvac is the one I prefer to use, there are $20-30 no-name brand alternatives including electric ones. Similarly if you don't own basic hand tools for some reason, you can just go to harbor freight or northern tools and get them for next to nothing, they'll be fine for basic work like oil changes. This is also a ridiculously easy car to change oil on, you can do it faster than driving to the shop and getting in line. Plus you know you did it right. Also, dumping oil? WTF? Don't dump oil, just take it to the parts store whenever you know you'll be driving to or past one, they'll recycle it for free. Don't senselessly pollute by dumping oil.

Dmitry's Garage I don’t have any of the tools and when I looked up the Mightyvac it was $107 on Amazon. Also I did not mean I would dump the oil. I meant it’s a pain to carry all that dirty oil into a shop.

The mityvac is just one brand of extractor pump, it is a premium one that I enjoy using. If you don’t own basic hand tools then yea you’d have to buy them, but they’re cheap unless you want premium ones (like what I listed). A basic ratchet set with some sockets is $15 from harbor freight. A 32mm socket is $5 on its own since they usually dont come in basic kits. Then a cheap pump is like $20-30. You’re $40-50 all in if you go cheap. I think a basic socket kit is a must have for anyone, I bought my first one when I was in high school. As for recycling oil, just put it back in the empty bottles from your new oil. Put em in a cardboard box and drop em off when you know it is convenient (i.e. already going to or past a store).

It has a drain plug. This is much easier because the filter is on the top of the engine. You don’t have to lift the car, make a mess of dripping oil, and its faster. This is exactly how the dealer and modern service centers do it for any car that you can access on the ground. I wish all engines had a top mount filter, its a way better design.
