The wear effect on the wings is really convincing. I'm going to give this a try. I'm building the Tamiya P-38G right now and this looks perfect for it.

Sweet! I'm grinding along on the old Monogram 48th scale B-26 but I'm adding engraved lines, resin nacelles etc. And recently I found newly produced Flak Bait' decals the last missing bit🤗

nice. The 1/72 version is a little tricky with aftermarket...

Interesting method..... but do we need to see you in the big picture while you are demonstrating?

Need, no. I figure out is more engaging.

This method seems like it gives you better control than hairspray/chipping fluid
For wanting to do masking for your own markings later on, have you tried masking those areas off with tape before applying the grease? Curious how big of a buffer zone you would need to avoid paint lift from masking. I am a big fan of hairspray chipping, but this seems like it might be easier/faster.

I have not tried taping off. That could be very wise. I started the masking for insignia and did not have much issues. A good clear coat helps keep Everything together for the next phase

In the words of Mike Rinaldi, “no chip is too small”.
