Wow! This is doable! The pochade boxes are really expensive, this is a great idea!!! Thank you, Malcolm ❤️

I made one from an old wooden cutlery box. Ripped out the inside liners. Separating the lid from the bottom and attaching it to the tripod using the top as a panel holder is ingenious! Thank you!

This is fantastic and so helpful! I’ve tried lugging the heavy one around. Not doable. I’m definitely going to try this. Thanks so much. Plein air painting really is a beautiful journey to explore, try things and improve your art ❤

I have now uses a 9x13inch baking sheet as a pallet with strip magnets on a metal lid. Pallet paper (8.5x11) drops right in. Seals ok. I do not like reaching in to the paper pallet held by small magnets. Like much better using the metal lid opposite side to the magnets to mount the paper pallet, and this fits in the box. The baking sheet I use as a side table. I bent the lid to do this but for this design a simple flat piece will work. To hold weight add a leg to the side. Reuse the old hinges attach to the end with the handle. Cut it so that you can use bull clips will hold it to the side of the box with the rim on the top edge of the side wall and the side of the sheet against the side of the box bottom. The leg swing out to the middle of the sheet and a magnet attached to the leg grabs the bottom. The magnet also holds the leg to the side for transporting. This could be your means of holding the stuff in the bottom and the bull clips could be part of holding stuff when closed.

I've used the Guerilla 8x10 cigar box for years, but the older Guerilla tripod is heavy and I want something lighter. Your setup with the separate panel holder and lighter tripod is a great idea. I've actually thought about getting a traditional paint box; I'm still kicking myself for getting rid of the one I started out with years ago.

Thank you Malcolm for this! I've never painted outdoors(except from the terrace😊) and I would like to ask you something - How you pack and transport the finished painting that it doesn't get damaged?

I use wet panel carriers. Basically a box with grooved sides that the panel slides into. They can be made too. Another simple way is to use a spacer on the corers of each panel. Pile the panels up wet side facing inwards and use elastic bands to hold the pile together. The spacers keep the panels from touching.
