Third of many more pike videos coming in 2024. As many of you know I’m trying to raise some money for Muscular Dystrophy in memory of a friend Simon Mirfin. If you have a few quid spare please donate via the justgiving link below and I’ll keep the videos coming.

In this video I go simple, and show you that you don't just need all the expensive heavy pike combos and massive lures to catch plenty of pike. Keep it simple and have some super fun!

Good video to show beginners you don’t need loads of lures or expensive kit, nice one Paul 😊

Absolutely mate. We do make it hard for ourselves sometimes. Most young kids don’t have the cash to buy all the fancy rods and big lures but this proves you don’t always need to.

Wow !!! Bet it feels great being back out and about & like you’ve never been away from the Bank …. Love this video buddy and you just couldn’t stop catching them Fish. As if they knew you had been having a break for awhile and you deserved every fish that you caught. That just wets my appetite even more…. I was hoping you might’ve come across a big stripey along the way. There’s always next time. All the best to you and the family buddy and have a great New Year and keep catching them my lad 👍😍👍🎣

Hi John. I'm sure i'll bag a stripey or two from there soon but think i'm off for a look elsewhere next. If i was just fishing for myself i'd drop on here and see what else i can find but that would be boring viewing i reckon. All the best for the new year matey have a good one!

Thanks for coming back online you’ve helped my lure fishing massively with your advice on the channel. That was a mega session I’d have caught 1 fish and moved on but interesting to see the potential of a pool like that holding multiple catches. A day like that would have been the highlight of my fishing year 😊

Cheers buddy glad the videos have helped. Yeah certain spots can hold plenty of pike. My record is 33 pike in 2.5 hours from one peg (different place to this one) so that gives you an idea. That’s a freak session though buddy but can often be like in this video if you find a similar spot. Also, never walk away from fish!!

Jack- tastic! Good to see you having fun Paul. My last session prior to Christmas was similar: fished for Perch for 4 hours and had 11 Pike ( up to 8lb) and a 4lb Chub but not one Perch. Great fun though on light gear. A happy new year to you and yours 👍

Nice Paul that's some good sport that mate great little christmas session. A few months ago i kept getting the treble up here, pike, perch and chub but just recent;y it's flood after flood and i haven't hit it in conditions similar to back then. Springtime hopefully may throw up some nice perch.

Enjoyed that Paul! You've caught more better quality in that one video than I have in the past couple of months, really struggling to pick up a better fish on my local Trent and mersey canal, other than jacks ranging from 1 to 2 pounds im not seeing much else. Anyways its inspired me to get back out again tomorrow!!!

Cheers buddy. Hope you have some luck getting a few better fish. Can only catch what’s in front of you bud. Sometimes if I’m going for the bigger fish I just go with big lures and either blank or catch something chunkier. Just had work if you’re out and don’t catch at all.

Hey Paul. It's private on this bit at this side but luckily i work here so thats why i manage to fish it. It's also not as good as it used to be. The hydro screw has changed the flow and it's no longer a slack spot this side.

Hi paul, can i ask why you use a lighter braid than the trace?
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 5 ай бұрын
Hi mate. I usually have them somewhere similar in breaking strain. Sometimes it’s the trace other times it’s the braid that’s stronger. I actually try and have both strong enough to bend the hooks on my lures. That becomes more difficult to do on the lighter strains though. On super light rods I’ll be fishing for perch so may have a 6lb trace in 8lb line. The trace is there to stop the odd bite off from pike. But I’ll change the 6lb trace often. On my light rods, like my perch and jack pike rod. I may have 15lb and 10lb trace for mostly perch fishing or it may have 20lb trace if I think I’ll catch more pike. Reason in This instance that I have a tougher trace is for when I’m catching more pike. A light trace does a job protecting against teeth but if you catch loads of pike then go stronger and be safe. Eventually a 10lb trace will snap on a jack thrashing around in the net and so on. On my heavy rod I’ve got 80lb braid and 100lb trace. But I’ve tested it umpteen times and when the braid snaps it snaps at the knot so I lose a full lure and trace to a snag. If I had a lighter trace, the trace would snap but I’d still lose everything I’d just save myself a swivel! 🤣 Hope that makes sense. Just a few of my thoughts:

I wonder if I can ask you a question I normally fly fish for trout I live just outside of Glasgow and I have vouchers for the Glasgow Angling Centre a big shop it sells game ,sea,predator you name they’ve got it so after watching your videos I want to get into pike fishing as there’s plenty of venues up here that hold big big pike like Loch Lomond and loch Awe and my mate he fishes a loch and he’s catching ones round about the 10-15 pd on dead bait but can I ask what would you recommend Rod wise that I could spin the kind of lures you were recommending in your video small ones and the big ones and maybe use dead bait if you could help me out I would really appreciate it so tight lines and a happy New Year.👍🎣🥃🇬🇧🔔

weight. As the rods are designed around casting a set range, which various loads from super tiny 0.1g to huge 300g lures. As a guide, in this video my rod is 7-21g and in reality I can cast a little less say 5g lures up to the 21g. This allows me to use soft lures from 2cm to about 6cm depending on jighead weight. I can also use spinners like size 3 Melos and I can use lots of cranks/plugs from 5cm to about 9cm. You will want a 2500 size spinning reel to go with the rod and something like 15lb braid and 20lb trace. No need to spend silly money, a rod for £50 and a reel for £50 will be very decent. Savage gear, Abu, Daiwa all do rods in this price range: I’d try and get a 7-8ft rod over a 6ft rod as you’ll want to be able to cast as far as possible when fishing lakes. Then just grab some tools and a net/mat and get out exploring and see what you can find. The places you’re buddy fishes hold pike so start there. I hope that helps a bit buddy.

For some reason I missed start of my message off. Silly me. So basically lure fishing rods are designed around casting a particular weight…. Add that but to start 🤣

Wonder if you deadbaited that area youd get the bigger girls?
@riverpiker

Years ago it was very good on dead/live bait. They built a hydro screw on far bank and it has changed the flow. The big pike don’t show as much these days but they won’t be far away. I tend to use this spot as a fun spot as it’s private access. At minute it’s in flood but if it runs off nice for weekend me and Neil might end up looking chucking a few baits out and casting lures round. 👍
