Easy Quest 2 Controller Teardown & Assembly (Quest 2 Drift Fix 2023)

​ This is an Easy Quest 2 Controller Teardown and Assembly procedure. I walk step by step through the entire process needed to disassemble the controller down to the circuit card level and then reassemble the entire controller.
This tip filled procedure might provide you the information needed to successfully disassemble and repair your defective or broken Quest 2 controller. These may help you repair drift, rebuild the transducer, replace the joystick, fix sticking buttons, defective triggers, broken controller rings and other problems that can affect your controller.
This procedure will show you how to completely disassemble the handle, so disconnecting and connecting the main circuit board ribbon cable is easy. 09:20
Most of the video is recorded close up, so you can get the best look at the work being done. At times, I'll use a magnifier to provide an even more detailed view for the work in progress.

🛑 Couple of Cautions
It is possible to damage your controller during teardown and reassembly. You shouldn't do it, unless you're willing to accept that fact. If its not working and you fix it, that's great. If its not working and its still not working when you're done, you're not any worse off.
ESD or electro static discharge can damage electronic components. I wear an esd strap and work on an esd surface during this video. You should take similar precautions when performing your repairs.

Last night my left grip button completely broke. Using your video I was able to safely disassemble the controller, find the broken piece, superglue it and troubleshoot to modify the guide post for the grip button, and ultimately fix my controller. 2 hours of work was a heck of a lot better than spending $75 and waiting a week to get a new one. I used this video to replace the transducer for my sons oculus controller. Wow , thank you, we did manage to fix it and your instructions were great. The only criticism I have is the ribbon cable. So I’m a non experience with electronics or taking things apart , it took me a good little while to figure out what switch I was flicking to release the ribbon. A close up or even a better verbal description of how to do that would have been great. That and dropping a screw ( which stuck to the trigger magnet and I was searching the floor lol) was my only 2 hicupps in the whole operation. Learned a lot and loved all the tips. That's great to hear. I'm hoping more folks will chime in when they replace their joysticks. I swapped in two transducers from different vendors on Amazon and didn't have trouble with either. (They look identical, same part number, etc..) I'm guessing they were made by the same manufacturer, but you never quite know til you get a batch of folks reporting back.

I was absolutely terrified doing this, i may have taken a drink at 3am and spilled a bit of water into my right controllers thumbstick, and it believed it was permanently being held down, meaning that button was inoperable and drained battery about 3x faster, but i could still use the thumbstick, i finally caved and decided i needed a new controller and saw a replacement kit, was terrified, but you got me through it way easier than expected, and I am overwhelmingly thankful to have it back again fully functional!!! thank you so much, it was still a daunting task due to my own nerves, but it went incredibly smoothly and with the video was a lot less nervous and difficult than i thought

The best video out there on tearing down the quest 2 controller. Managed to replace the stick on my left controller, and wouldn't have been able to do it without this video. Some of the screws were hard to remove, and I had to be patient as I was starting to damage the screws, probably because the screwdriver that came with the kit wasn't the best quality. Really awesome tutorial! There were a few things I struggled with like how hard it was to take off the back of the controller with the "rolling motion", but I was able to install it just fine! And I don't know if it might've been something with the transducer I got or what, but it was a little bit offset from the center according to the system. Not drifting through, just a bit offset. Luckily I could easily fix that by increasing the dead zone and I'm good! So yeah, thanks for this tutorial!

To everyone struggling with getting the ring screws out with the t5 bit in the kit: The problem is the ring is in the way of the screwdriver, so you're coming at an angle. The only way I could get them out was to take the bit out of the driver, hold the bit with needle nose pliers and turn with those (while supplying force into the screw from the back of the bit with your finger) If you have an angled screwdriver with or that can fit a t5 bit, use that. Otherwise, it's the plier + fingers

The issue was that the ring screws are definitely smaller than T5 on my controller (maybe T4, but I didn't measure), and the kit I bought only included 2 T5s. My own screwdriver kit I've had for a long time only goes down to T6. I took a metal file and lightly filed the edges of one of the kit's T5s, and then it actually fit into the ring screws. I call that a win.

I watched another video yesterday to change the joystick of my left controller. Yours is a bit more precise, though I managed to do the repair. I knew that the bigger ribbon cable was covered, but I didn't take it off. The way you show it, makes it a lot easier to connect the cable again. I forgot to make sure dual ribbon cables were on top of the circuit board before screwing down then made another mistake, not rechecking buttons after reassembling so had to go back and remove circuit board again lol. this helped me a lot to get my right controller working again. (slight corrosion on one of the connectors, fixed by gingerly scrubbing it with isoprop. really wasnt as finicky as i feared. lol great, detailled video!

Great help thanks. Quest 2 left thumbstick suddenly failed for left movement. Happily I had just bought spare thumbstick transducers for my Quest 1 ( A much more difficult task to replace I think). No problem getting black top disk off, found only 2 tiny dabs of black glue. On reassembly the joystick worked but left hand tracking was well wonky. Dived in again and found the antenna strap was at a slight angle at the left antenna connector, Put it on properly this time and now all good. Thanks

Really helpful video, I followed it to disassemble the joystick and then followed the ifixit tutorial on how to open up the joystick housing and cleaned it off. Now the controller is fully functional without drifting.

Nice! I had a noisy drifty controller, and all I had to do was pop the black circle off, pop the black thumb stick of, blow in it and wiggle it a few times. Good as new!
