Maybe use a fine brush for a bit, at the end, for details in the foreground. The light on the water and in the sky is beautiful.

Joe, thank you again. Getting more excited for brushes to arrive. What are the seven colors Ron favors? I can see my traditional palette isn't going to work well with these brushes so will set one up on butcher's tray. (rescued from garage so it is authentic)

Thank you! After 30 years of painting in watercolors and many failed attempts with using different hake brushes, I have purchased a set of Ranson hake brushes. Just watching demo’s while I wait for them to arrive. I’m really trying to loosening up and branch out into new ways of painting. I have invested in an insane collection of professional brushes over the years, not much room in my large studio for more brushes but, I’m excited to experiment with these simple brushes! Not sure if I will utilize them with portraits, lol.
@joemenzaart2 жыл бұрын
Portraits will be tough but I’ve seen it done. The big brush fast and loose approach for me is very enjoyable. I can use most any large brush but the RR is my favorite.

Joe, thanks for showing how you mix your paints on your pallet. It looks like it is new. Do you clean your pallet before each painting? I certainly have gained a lot of experience from your videos as using the hake brush is a new technique for me. Thanks again, Roger
@joemenzaart4 жыл бұрын
I don’t clean it necessarily but I will use my brush and clean it up to get a grey color from old mixes. For my color wells I spray with clean water and drain.

What are Ron’s 7 colors? I just got his Big Brush Watercolor but haven’t read much. I began watercolor at the beginning of the pandemic in the US but don’t practice as much as I could. However, I find watching instructional videos on KZbin sort of a meditation in itself.
Hi everyone thank you for all the views on this video I hope I make Ron Ranson proud. This is an older video I have learned much since.

Hello Joe, I’ve just started watercolours (3 months) and really like the Ron Ranson style. I’ve tried to emulate your painting but with poor success. I don’t have a hake brush - I’m just using a wash brush so wondering if this is the problem. Also, for the foreground, do the colours need to be straight from the tube to get the strength? Thanks in advance. PS I’m on the RR FB group but until I get something approaching reasonable I’m afraid to upload it!
@joemenzaart5 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrew! Don’t be intimidated to post in the group we have all skill levels there and it’s a very encouraging group! The hake brush, for me, is key to this style. If you watch artists like Alan Owen, he uses the larger mops. To answer your question, as I move down the page my paint volume increases and my use of water decreases. I do use paint straight but the hake always has some moisture on it. Once you get a hake you will get how the moisture is as the hake holds a lot of water. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching. We’ve had several discussions in our group and I’ve mentioned the ways to pronounce it in other videos. Because Ron Ranson himself and others on you tube have pronounced it as “Hake” most of us say it that way. And as a big Hockey fan it’s less confusing lol.
