I actually prefer the "facing kings" approach. Put your rook blocking the file the king can escape from and make your king face the other. When they move directly in front of your king, deliver a check with the rook.

There’s another method where you cut the king off and use opposition to push the king to the back rank. Way harder to stalemate with that one.

Finally I won after using your method!! I was less on time and I had 2 rooks and a knight. I just kept the knight and one rook to a corner and did exactly this with the second rook. It took some time I had 1 minute left in rapid. The king escaped a few times from the cage. Make sure you are not doing checkmate with the rook before that final checkmate obviously. And finally victory after long series of draws and stalemates.🎉🎉🎉🎉😂

I prefer an alternative method where you use your king’s coverage squares to make it so when you check your opponent’s king with your rook, their only option is to move backwards towards the edge you’ve selected! Sort of similar to a latter mate with 2 rooks.

The thing where you move the rook only when kings line up is so much easier for me brain lol

It can actually be done much more safely (i.e. never accidentally blundering your rook) by actually keeping the rook far away from the king. Draw a line that the black king cannot cross. Force the kings into opposition and then give a check. Each time this happens, the black king has to move closer to the edge of the board. Continue this process and the final check will be checkmate. It's not as quick, but it's much simpler.

or you push the king to the i.e. H line, and canon sits on the G line not allowing he king to get out. place your king on the i.e. F4. when opponent king gets to H4, you check with the cannon and its a checkmate.

I use similar but different method. I make a dead line with rook and use my king to deliver a check forcing king to move to another rank by rank, which eventually forces king to stay at the corner. Then checkmate.

That's not how I was taught KR vs K, but I suppose this is the more efficient way. It's also slightly more complicated than the simpler version, even if the simpler version requires a bit more moves.
