My wife and daughter needed an upgrade from their cheap Ikea desk, so I made this easy to build desk that's perfect for a home office or the homeschooling family! It has easy access to a hidden power strip, plenty of desk space, and a handful of drawers to keep you organized.

Way easier to build than you probably think! All you need is an entire shop full of thousands of dollars of tools! EASY!!!

Yes it is easier with tools 👍

the tools make it easier and faster to complete and more of a professional finish. you can very well still slap this together with the basic tools with more time.

This argument really isn't valid. I build an epoxy/wood table using Blacktail studio's class, and I didn't use a single power tool other than a drill. I had zero experience with woodworking, or furniture assembly beyond an Ikea bookshelf. I built it from an old apple tree that died winter of 2022. It came out beautiful and it's a solid piece of furniture. People have built furniture like this for thousands of years without power tools, and are continuing to do so. Saying it's impossible is rediculous.

clamps, circular saw, drill a sander (can literally just be sanding paper) are the only tools you would actually need to build a desk similar to this.

This is my dream desk and shop setup. My husband and I always wanted a shop like this however, he developed a rare degenerative and fatal disease. We always dreamed of working together in a shop creating beautiful furniture and such. Your family is blessed to have such a talented husband, father in their lives!

Although I'm proud of how it cane out,, my first desk, (and only so far), isn't nearly as nice as yours is Mike,. Great job as usual! It was also my first project after becoming disabled and being able to devote more time to what had always been a hobby since taking wood shop in the 8th grade a very long time ago. I used plywood that I had on hand, which was ¾" of whatever birch plywood THD sells, so it had a nice finish on both sides. There were some gaps between the layers, and since I kind of like the look of the edge of plywood, I had to fill in those gaps. It still made a really nice looking desk, although it's a little small for my needs. That's the price of using what you have on hand though, your project is dependent on the amount of wood you have. It doesn't help that I couldn't drive myself to get more, that's an unfortunate after effect of my surgery, among other things.

Thank you so much sir! Desks and tables are always fun projects, even better when you build them for people you know. I almost didn't have enough maple on hand to make a replacement desk after I cut the first top too short (Not sure I'll ever forget that lol). Thanks goodness I did or the ladies would've had to deal with the glue line 😬. Thank you for watching! Regards, Mike

How has the Delta Cruzer held up for you? How accurate has it been for you? Looks like it did a great job with those drawers! Thanks.
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike Жыл бұрын
I like it! It seems to have held its accuracy better than the Bosch, but angled cuts when the saw head is extended always have a bit of slop in them (this has been the case with every miter saw I've used, I haven't owned a kapex but am considering that as a "someday" upgrade). Thanks! The drawers came out great😃

WOW! Ambrosia Maple is a great choice for the top. Although you did not need to use a track saw to break down the plywood first to create the drawer boxes, what track saw do you own? The Kreg ACS2000 Adaptive Cutting System Saw Guide Track Kit since they sponsee you? Would you recommend it? Thanks!
@WoodshopMike
@WoodshopMike 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gary! Yes, the Ambrosia looks amazing but it's also difficult to pay attention to your work too lol! I do own the Kreg ACS and it's been a great saw. They did send me the system when it was first released a few years ago and I did a short intro video on it (kzbin.info/www/bejne/l56aeKibedV8a6s). Kreg has been a long time partner yes, but aside from that I would absolutely recommend the saw. Also just so ya know, I believe they're currently running a sale on the ACS (if not you either just missed it or it's coming soon lol). Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video! Regards, Mike

Question for you, do you think this build could support a quartz slab as a top piece? I have a beautiful piece of quartz that would fit perfectly, weighing about 250 pounds in total.

Oh man that was so painful to realize 😂 not sure what I'll end up using it for, but if nothing else I have a nice been panel to start from! I was kicking around maybe using it to build a dartboard cabinet from... If it goes into a scrap wood challenge, Kathleen will certainly beat me with the offcut I glued back on 😂

"it's easier than you think" is how you opened this... all you need is a jointer, a planner, a table saw, a chop saw, a pocket jig, a spray booth with all the spraying equipment, a band saw, a trim router, a table router and, many many clamps. But yeah, lol, easy 🤪

haha yea I hear ya, a 24" desk is shallow. My editing desk is only 24" and really wish the room was large enough for me to have made it deeper. Especially since I'm staring at a large monitor for hours on end!
