Escape the Ordinary with the Unsinkable Skiff! The Ultimate Car-Topable Boat for Adventures!
This week I made the rudder box, the tiller, laminated the wooden blanks for the foils, opened the center case slot for the daggerboard , prepared the hull for painting, applied 2 pot primer and a first coat of 2 pot paint.

So many great tips for boat builders. And so reassuring to see you also encounter various little hiccups along the way, like I guess we all do. (ie. glad it is not just me).

Hello Teo, as always it is very entertaining and educational at the same time to watch you build your Optimist dinghy on steroids (as i like to call the goose). Thank you very much and always fair winds, greetings from cold Germany

Two. I was not disappointed. More tips from a bloody expert. Mik will surely love the handy hints for making his already easy to build design even easier, if that’s possible. It is certainly easier for me to understand and less scope to go wrong. That’s always my problem. Thanks as always mate

Good progress again! I thought you might have tried some rabbet joints for your foils given that fancy new router, but if Europe is anything like Australia the bits probably cost more than the router itself!

I expect some else might have already suggested the idea but if you were to make the mast socket the same as the GIS you could use the GIS rig on quieter days. ??
@TheBoatRambler

I did think making it bigger for the GIS rig but then I thought I should keep things as standard as possible to start with. 😉

Teo, a great video again and this time it really hit home for me. I just came up from my garage after a 7 am start and great progress on my rudder and centre board. They are non standard parts from another dingy project that I will use for my first sail on the Goose. I can't make the proper parts until I get the hull out of the garage which I hope to do by next weekend. Anyway, after good progress in the morning, I decided to get the side decks prepared for the final top coat tomorrow. So I started the sanding and masking. By mid-afternoon, things were going well and then a little voice in my head said "go for it - you could get the top coat on before the day cools down too much". I was very tired, but I decided to press on. Out came the 2-part polyurethane, along with a tin of thinners. I prepared everything very carefully knowing I was tired. I mixed the 2-part paint and added a little thinners - things looked a little odd, but the thinners mixed in OK. I started the paint job and then something flashed through my old brain - Oh b*llocks ! that was Epoxy thinners I just used. I came up to the house very dejected, but watching your video cheered me up immensely. Keep up the good work>

@TheBoatRambler

@@marcus_k85 if you are reffering to the paint it was Hempel's one pot Hempalux 52970 black. Im going for lighter color because black will be too hot to sit on when exposed to our summer sun.

Center case is still a scary element for me on a boat (even on mine). Hitting anything hard (e.g. rock) with the centerboard will put tremendous load on the poor thing. So it better be stronger than the centerboard itself :D Nice trick with the file and tape, will remember this.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 6 ай бұрын
I might put a strip of carbon inside the center case to reinforce the impact point in the case of grounding.

It's a boat to be used and abused. I would not worry to much about negligible imperfections. My two cents worth anyway, and a comment for the algorithm to chew on. Looking forward to the next episode allready. Thanks.

Why dint you use single pieces of wood for the foils? Thans for all the great content! 👍👏👏👏
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 5 ай бұрын
Hi, a single piece of wood has a tendency to warp due to the grain. By using strips the warp is minimum and the grain on each piece would want to warp in different direction from the adjacent one, keeping it very stable and flat.

One more question. What brand topcoat did you use, I remember seeing it used on your cruiser as well, does it cure with a real good tough finish?, yeah and paint here is also expensive, I smiled at your "at 50 euro a can its good,..... my thoughts as well
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 6 ай бұрын
I'll let you off because I know you have so much to do on your amazing boat that you probably can't watch the whole video. it's all there 😁 All paints and primers I use are by Hempel. The two pot paint does cure hard. Even the Hempalux standard paint that I used for my GIS does cure to a hard finish although it takes like a week to get fully hard.
