The boat is really coming along and looking great, it's not about the screw ups but how you fix them. Well done for being honest, that helps us beginners. See you soon

One small improvement - the tiller should be clamped so that the two ends that will glue to the rudder box are best if they are clamped parallel while the glue sets up. I'll have a look at the plan - maybe I need to add something. With the group builds of 10 boats here in the philippines we just clamp to the made up rudderbox while the tiller glue sets up. After rounded then glued to the rudderbox.
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
Hi @MichaelStorerBoatPlans I did clamp it parallel while building the tiller. Later when I glued the rudder box to the tiller and clamped it I checked and it was parallel, so in my case I didn't need a clamp. I should have highlighted that in the video. The first pic on the plans shows the tiller clamped to keep it parallel, so adding a note to the plans would be great.

Teo I recall that you put some extra bulkheads in those side tanks so hopefully that will reinforce the unglassed joint in the bottom of the hull? Maybe without that you'd be in trouble but you have surely lowered the stress along that long joint by those extra bits of plywood inside.
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
Hi Jason, Michael Storer explained that the glass tape is important mainly if you use bad plywood as the top veneer might delaminate. They had that problem only in some boats in the Philippines after a few years of racing. so I should be fine!😁
@jasonstork96067 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler Yeah I agree if that's the only problem then you have it covered with good ply, plenty of epoxy coats and the end grain is hidden inside the fillet. Should be fine.

I had always been so supportive of people using closed cell foam in larger boats with cabins ( the insulation + positive buoyancy ) so the best thing I learned from this series was again to think. closed cell foam really does become a detriment to small skiffs. it's too much weight; and far too much weight, in proportion, once one realizes it is unnecessary. ( due to the lower inertia )
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
Hi Eric, I have always been against any kind of foam in small wooden boats. It adds unnecessary weight and it ends up absorbing water promoting rot! Design the boat with separated watertight compartments and it should be fine.
@RulgertGhostalker7 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler ah yes, the wood...that would be a primary reason also...i have never designed for wood, and feel very stupid now for doubting another designer... designing is the continuous process of thinking about what one is designing...but it is good to have this documented with it, so builders understand why Not to.
@RulgertGhostalker7 ай бұрын
@@TheBoatRambler I stopped short with only, what was it, two weeks into my skiff design? .. because it's production composite. and to the point now where I am thinking much more about the tooling than the boat itself.

@@TheBoatRambler and then there is such the slimmer chance that it will get made, being a production prospect ... it's better to stop, and wait for interest, so I can proceed under team feedback, and verifications, in such that case that it is.

I had good results using a foam brush to apply varnish and then tipping with a brush. Just do small areas and keep a wet edge. Worked well on my Tartan 34c cockpit
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I get good results with brush only, just need to deposit varnish in different spots before starting with the long strokes. On my GIS It looked like glass (on horizontal surfaces ofc 😅 )

No eye protection, no mask when routing…I guess he’s immortal. Or at least he’s never seen a router bit shatter. Or looked at the list of chemicals used in the production of plywood…🙄☠️
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
There you are!! I was wondering when you would show up and tell me off for something! I missed you buddy! Welcome back. The router has a polycarbonate protection all around. But you should know me by now! I wear masks only sometimes, often forget hearing protection, wear goggles only if I’m grinding, rarely wear life vests, I build awkward boats and I choose to do a bunch of other unspeakable things. I’m certainly not immortal, I’ve been around for only half a century and already have a lot of parts missing including a bit of my right lung, a kidney and some other spare parts so I don’t think I´ll be around for another 50 years. But I will have as much fun as I can for the next 49! 😁 According to YT statistics, I’m sure I said this before, 90% of my viewers are over 40, we are all grownups, no one here needs me to tell them that they should wear safety gear! Cheers, Teo

How much does this boat weigh? Can one person cartop it?
@danielpatterson45797 ай бұрын
Possibly, but I think the weight is 125lbs, so it'd rely upon having a well tuned cartopping setup (just picking it up and putting it on roofrack would not be a one person job for most people).
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
I have not weighted it yet but I was aiming for 50Kg/110lbs. I should be possible for one person to cartop it depending on how you chose to do it. That is certainly my intention.
@TheBoatRambler7 ай бұрын
The boat is built mostly using 4mm plywood so I hope it's under 125lbs! 😉

@@TheBoatRambler I’m sure you’ll figure out a good system (the flat decks actually allow it to be rolled on from the rear using a pair of suction kayak rollers); I just didn’t want that person to think it wouldnt involve some thought of how to do it (unlike, eg, a lightweight kayak)
@montrealpaddlingandboating64827 ай бұрын
What about a nesting or modular version of this boat that would consist of 2 halves that are attached together before sailing? I'm sure one person could cartop each half which would weigh around 60 lbs?
