So glad I stumbled across this - I’m in middle of a build and am using a Lifesaver, as well for water because of the filter. How did you connect the food grade hose to the tap on the Jerrycan? And once it’s in place and hooked up, do you just leave the tap locked in the open position and rely on the faucet to stop the flow of water? Really looking forward to your answer!
@adaptivetravel5 ай бұрын
Originally the hose we were using just pushed onto the tap barb on the Jerrycan and since it was made from silicone it gripped well and stayed in place without leaking. Recently as the hose had started to get a little mouldy after standing with water in it last winter we’ve replaced it for a new hose. This time we’ve used John guest push fit piping, again it just pushes onto the barb of the tap but you do have to warm the pipe a little in hot water to help it flex a bit in order to get it on, once it cools it grips nicely to the barb. We do leave the tap in the open position unless we’re not using the van for a some time and then we close it off but yeah always open while we’re using it. Hope that helps

Great to stumble across your channel. I’ve been looking at getting a van myself. My only hurdle is the toileting situations. Have you got anything in mind for what your going use? Or do you tend to use facilities on sites/public?
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
The toilet situation is a tricky one. We try and use public toilets/campsite facilities when possible but it's not been easy so far with a lot being closed and we don't always stay at campsites. We've got a portable toilet as a backup, it's not particularly nice or easy to use but has definitely been well worth having, Claire uses it more. A lot of people rave about composting toilets but they didn't really work with the space we had or with Craig's bowel care but may suit you depending on the sort of van you get and how you do yours. We think the benefits of having a van outweighs the toilet issues so if you really fancy a van, try not to let it put you off
@P100KLE3 жыл бұрын
@@adaptivetravel I’m not a para myself, but toileting in general is a ball ache isn’t it. Knowing me if I was transferring from the toilet and it not being fixed down securely would cause a bit of chaos should it tip over. I’ve thought about using an office/workshop stool on wheels for potential moving about inside so I wouldn’t have to bring the wheelchair. Not sure how your stability would be using one but it would mean getting up and down the narrow side of the bed.
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
@@P100KLE we did have that concern as well but turns out it's fairly heavy when the flush section is filled with water so it's pretty sold. You can also fix them down, we haven't bothered because it's stored securely during transit and it's less faff to empty if not but we have friends who've fixed theirs down. It's funny you mention the stool idea, that was our original idea for getting around too!! In the end it wasn't necessary since this van is small enough to just transfer from one spot to another but we do wonder about it for a bigger van which we hope to upgrade to in the future. What sort of size are you thinking of?
@P100KLE3 жыл бұрын
@@adaptivetravel well my current license would only cover me for up to 2.5t so would be limited to that. So similar size to what you have got. I’m looking at getting the bowhead reach bike.. have a look if you’ve not seen it before. So the van idea was to cart that around and be able to sleep in the van too. So would only be used sort of one or two days at a time. The toilet would have been something I wanted to get in because going au natural like an able bodied person in the wild isn’t an option and finding anywhere quickly in the Lake District where I live is near impossible. Yeah the stool idea would be my option I think.. I can’t transfer from the floor to chair with having weak everything 😂
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
Also very much considering getting a bowhead reach, it looks like a total game changer. Unfortunately with the way we've converted our van it wouldn't really be able to fit it inside anymore so that's part of the reason we want to upgrade to a bigger one with a enough under bed storage for bikes for both of us. That's pretty much the same reasons we put a toilet in too. Have a look at something like the porta potta 335, this one comes with a kit to fix it down to the floor. Funnily enough we're in the lake district right now. Any recommendations for things to do while we're here?

My goodness, you guys look dressed to be cold and wet. Why is the sink facing the opposite way from where you guys are in the van? At 8:20, you should have probably used plumbers putty on both the inside (female thread) and outside (male thread) to avoid leaks.
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's been raining/snowing/hailing incessantly until this last week but hopefully there won't be much more of that until next winter now! Not sure what you mean about the sink facing the opposite way, do you mean the rotation of the sink? Or the position of the tap? Or why it's on the opposite side to the fridge? Or something else haha? We did get some plumbers putty but we tested it without and it wasn't leaking so we didn't use it, not sure if it was a good idea or not but we figured we could add it later if it does start leaking.
@morgancalvi66753 жыл бұрын
@@adaptivetravel I was just wondering why the sink seemed to have boards in the back making it inaccessible from inside the van.
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
Oh right that's because that section behind the boards is going to be a cupboard (we'll be making it in the next video) and also at ground level the wheelarch is directly behind the sink so you couldn't really get to it from that position anyway. We want it to be like the "kitchen" area at the front and the "bedroom/living room" at the back
@morgancalvi66753 жыл бұрын
@@adaptivetravel How will Craig get access to the sink, was what I was wondering though because it only seems to face te door when you are out the other door and not inside 🤔? I guess if he has a cooler of water on he bed or something, it will solve that issue. Never mind 🙃.

The plumber's putty will also protect against rust and corrosion, depending on the pipe materials used.

hi this might be a better water pump than the one you're trying to use you can find them on eBay Sink Water Hand Pump Tap Double Action Camping Trailer Motorhome
@adaptivetravel3 жыл бұрын
We did consider that type of pump when we first started looking at options but we had 3 essential requirements: it must have a water filter, the water must be able to flow hands free without continously having to use one hand to pump it and the tap must have a pull out hose so it wouldn't really work for us, we'd rather sacrifice a bit of water pressure over any of those requirements. If we do find that it's too annoying in the future our plan is to use the hot water line (with more cold water) connected to a submersible pump going into a third jerrycan so that we can have a higher pressure for filling the sink but also having the filtered water for drinking but if we find it's not too annoying we won't bother. Thanks for the suggestion though 😀👍
