Having enough clean water when you are out on your overland or camping adventures is essential, but what’s the best method to store, filter and dispense it? Well I’ve been using carrying this LifeSaver Jerry Can in the back of my Jeep Gladiator that has a built in water filter and pressure pump for the last several month and I think this is a solution you may want to consider. In this video I’m going to give you my opinion on the pros and cons and at the end of the video I’ll give it a recon gear score. #jerrycan #overlandgear #emergencyprepardness

Excellent review but I think you’re being extremely generous on the 6 out of 10 for price. There is no way you can justify 300 for that especially considering it’s already showing signs that it won’t last more than a couple years. If it was extremely durable and a lifetime product I could see $300

@@devilshaircut9 I completely agree if your in another country where viruses are a concern. If that water can even filters for viruses. Sawyer s3 filter is much cheaper if viruses are a issue. Here in America that’s not an issue. The sawyer squeeze is only $30. Much better option. Set it up as a gravity filter at camp and your set. So yes $300 is way to much

@@jeffthompson8835 This is my first video on this channel but he doesn’t explain lifesaver very well. The life saver filters go down to .015 microns and are designed to purify very very contaminated water. Think muddy flood water filled with human waste. For normal over landing in the USA it is overkill but where the bulk of their products go like natural disaster relief or where communities have no access to clean water they work great. Their largest unit filters 2 million liters and is meant for remote communities. The jerry can also isn’t bad considering it’s 5-6 cents per gallon of water. The S3 is $1.29 per gallon. I found it for 79.99 on amazon and only has 400 uses out of a 20 fluid ounce container. Now I am biased since I’ve been a fan of their products since I saw the founders’ ted talk many years ago where he drank water filled with poop on stage using his products lol. Edit: spelling

I like convenience as much as anyone, but one problem with “all-in-one” type products is that if one feature fails, the whole system fails. I’d personally rather have a quality stand alone filter system and a separate container. The pressure feature is nice, but gravity works well too.

With the primary purpose of this unit being water filtration it actually is a good price when compared with other systems on the market. I've tried many different filters over the years and for high capacity daily use this fits the bill rather well. As for the spigot, I rotate mine to the inside of the can, creates far more protection while in transit.

I have had a lifesaver jerry for about 5 years now and with all the crap going on now it is proving its worth over and over . Here in Scotland and thanks to stormy weather i was recently without power for 9 days . Everything went down including the pumping station and i because i bragged about the lifesaver when i got it (folk dont forget ) i became the local water pumping station for a few days until bottled water deliveries were made . Kettles , containers pots , i was filling the lot for neighbours ,no electricity required .Could i have done that with a Sawyer ,not a hope in hell and I know now that many of my neighbours have went and bought a lifesaver jerry or lifesaver cube . Yes its pricey but what price 100% fresh clean drinking water when you need it and i know in just a few days mine paid for itself multiple times over .

Brad: LOVE your channel and have been looking forward to these kind of reviews! I would respectfully suggest the following criteria for your reviews for consistency and so that others can make more appropriate comments, possibly based on their own experiences... VALUE: can you find a similar item at a lesser price/are you getting additional features when compared to similar items at the same price point? DURABILITY: how likely are YOU to break it? How quality are the components? RELIABILITY: how long before it breaks itself? WEIGHT: how heavy is it compared to similar items/ is it worth having for the extra weight? SPACE: how much external/internal space does it take? POWER: How much power does it use? Thanks again so much for all your hard work!

Hey Brad, love to see the evolution of the channel (been following for years, possibly since ever) and evidently you’re continuing to produce very carefully crafted content so thank you for this. I’d have just one suggestion on the Recon Gear Score (RGS) I think it’s better to average it out to 10 which is a number more appropriately geared (pun intended) to reviews. I think we all are used to scores based on a 0-10 scale. My 2 cents. As always keep the good content coming.

It's got a lot of nice features. Now we need a company that will price the item commensurate with the actual cost to produce it while still making a reasonable profit, so like the $100 neighborhood. Once LifeSave has some competition they will either have to stop price gouging and price the item appropriately or fail and let the more reasonably priced company put them out of business. Competition is a wonderful thing for the consumer.

Brad, I think you're spot on with 6 of 10 for the price. If I translate that to price you're saying it should be $180. Given some knowledge over costs of good water filtration cartridges and then considering the can and other accessories, I agree that gets it up to the $180 mark...no higher than $200. They will likely sell many more at the $180 mark.

The key with the Lifesaver is that it will remove viruses. The other water filters out there will not. When you are in a situation that requires you to drink water from an unknown source, I trust this water filter. Everyone talks about how Berkey Water filters are the gold standard but they do not filter out anything below 0.2 micron. The Lifesaver will filter down to 15 nm (0.015 micron). You can get a smaller unit for $150, it's called the Lifesaver cube. I own a Jerry can and just purchased a cube this week.

I checked this out awhile back when it was on sale at REI and like it's functionality. But for that much money I can have redundancy with all same features for less. Plus a water purifier as stand alone vs filter. Mil Spec water can, small air pump, few other parts and fittings would cover the ability for portable plus sprayer. As a plus most could be stored inside of water can until needed. Known heavy duty, can be sanitized with bleach.

the one thing that you didn't get into at all is the major points it should score on it's microfiltration. there are many corporate videos as well as foreign aid departments that go into great detail on the filtration membrane being the best available period. it filters much tighter than the smallest known virus or bacteria, this sets it apart from many other portable filtration solutions out there. Great video and glad to see it in use on the trail out there but definitely pricey!!!

I wish you would Re-Visit External Fuel containers. My Rotopax have ALWAYS dribbled fuel over my car/ME/my clothes and the spring loaded locking mechanism never seems to work. A good Brad suggestion would make a great episode or partial. JUst came back from Death Valley and got stinky from fuel spilling so apologies if I'm a bit heated

I would really appreciate seeing more reviews by you, I respect you opinion very highly, and would love to see many more of these types of videos, here or on E3. I just purchased a Joolca sink, water heater, and electric pump with all the necessary hoses and fittings for $400. I am curious what you would score the JOOLCA system at, considering the high score you gave this jerry can with a pump and filter at $300. Just for water storage. Understandably the JOOLCA requires 12v electricity to run the pump, and the filter on the JOOLCA is just for sediment. (I will need to add a much better filter to match the jerry can filter you have just reviewed). I don't know of any plastics that are indestructible, so most are fairly durable but will show abrasion, and will show wear. But my concern would be when it gets cold how easily will it crack. So please do a review on the JOOLCA sink/heater/tub system. Thanks for all you do.

This LIFESAVER jerry can has a 20,000L filter in it. That is 5283gal of filtration. You cannot find many house filters with that capacity for less than $100, and most of those are not for portable systems nor do the remove viruses, bacteria, or cysts. The filter alone is what you might want to emphasize on this product.

Is it possible to screw in the spigot facing to the rear so it's safe during transit, then rotate it to it's proper position once at camp?

Brad, can you just turn the spigot to face away from the opening when it's stored in the truck while on trail ? That would help protect it.

Yep, 100%. Lesson learned, don't travel with it sticking out!

Unless the spigot is indexed to only fit on one way, you might try fitting it facing towards the handle to protect it during transport.

Exactly, I've started rotating it so I don't break it again.

Can't you simply loosen the water spigot cap and rotate the spigot 180 degrees to protect it when not in use? At 8:00 you state in my experience plastic hand pumps usually fail. You can’t fault this pump if it hasn’t failed just because you think it will. So, I think you were unjust on quality score? The price seems high, but you get all this in a all-one compact package? Good review though. Thanks

for 300 it should come Rhino lined. with extra filters and orings since the rings fall off so easily . awesome product for an all in one solution. i like it.

The cost is in the filtration and convince, If I lived off grid absolutely. also great for a bug out situations. For weekend trips probably not.

In an emergency situation this is every bit worth the money. There is no messing around with the same size can and pumping water in from say a Pure or Katadin. Brad since you first used it I keep going back a looking. Christmas list item........

Built in filtration and pump is a big plus, price is a little steep but it could be a Lifesaver literally. So for emergencies and SHTF scenarios I would say yes it's worth the money. Would I purchase one? Probably not, I have water purification gear that is much less expensive and much more portable.

Be careful with the can, the micro filtration is good when you use pre-filtration, if you use no so clean water you will clog the straws and will end up with no water at all, also the carbon should be before the membrane and not after, also the amount of carbon filtration is not the greatest, activated carbon works on contact time, and it looks like you have about a 1/32" in thickness, normal carbon filtration normally runs in a 2.25"x 10" filter, which gives you 1 year life, also once you use the filter carbon will tend to create bacteria, if you keep the wet carbon for a few months you can introduce bacteria to you final water out of this unit, hope it helps and enjoy the outdoors.

After more research and after I ordered a unit, I have come to the realization the UK is not supporting US markets very well. Its very hard to find information, spare filters and accessories. This is not a cheap unit and the US customers deserve a better business model.

Maybe Not for garden variety camping, but as part of your bug out/survival gear? Absolutely! I have 2 of the 40,000 gallon versions in my emergency preps. Clean safe drinking water can be lot harder to secure then it seems. What’s your family worth?

Wondering if anyone has tested the @dometic Go Hydration jug and faucet with the @camelbak Reservoir Filter Kit? Seems like a perfect match but am wondering if the flow rate of the filter affects the performance and functioning of the faucet.

Just a small critique. You should mention if you received the products for free for review. That may skew your ratings especially on cost.

For the regular guy the price is out of bounds. I also prefer to keep clean water and the filter separate. Even placing clean water in the jug it is contaminated as soon as it enters the jug with the filter inside the jug.The average Joe can build a plastic jug for around 100 to 125 dollars. Around Bend Oregon out!
