Yuuuuuuuuummm. I've also made caramelized onions in a slowcooker, if you want to get really lazy with it.
@marystestkitchen9 жыл бұрын
But I've been too lazy to go buy a slow cooker... ;-D

A savory dish is not complete for me without onions and if they're caramelized, even better! I store my onions in the fridge to minimize the cry whilst chopping :)
@marystestkitchen9 жыл бұрын
Veggietorials You know what? I think that's the trick! Cutting onions never used to make me cry. I thought it was odd when I heard that on TV shows and such. Then I moved out on my own...and onions started to make me cry; some more than others. I thought maybe because I was getting old and my eyes were more sensitive.... Now I remember, my parents would store onions in the fridge too!

Hello. I am a bit lazy, so the first time I did this I stirred every 20 minutes. Worked out well for me. Also many think the type of onions used is important. Sweet onions like Vidalia work the best for carmelization if available. Thanks!

+esquibelle I'm so glad you found a method that worked for you! :-)

These caramelized onions look great! A trick I've had success with is putting a lid on to help kick-start the process of breaking down the onions, and once they're soft enough removing it. The extra steam from the onions helps the onions soften reduce the cooking time. Hope this is helpful :)

Gregory Davis Thanks for sharing your experience! That's an interesting technique and I will try it next time. :-)

i push them in a pile, with some vegan melty cheese on top and then eat them with what i would put on a burger. ...i have that same kind of pan... if you want to get rid of the dark stains a little oil and baking soda to scrub, rinse, spray with vinegar and rinse again.
@marystestkitchen9 жыл бұрын
kokoro nagomu Mmm I'm going out to buy some melty cheese soon! Thanks for your tip. I have tried using baking soda and vinegar but not with oil. I'll try your method this weekend. :-) Thanks so much for your comment.
@ginduf9 жыл бұрын
make a paste out of the oil and baking soda and lightly scrub it with a paper towel until the discoloration comes off... you could use just oil and a paper towel but it takes longer and requires more effort. .

kokoro nagomu Thank you! I will let you know how it goes...or else you will see in the next video I use this pan :-)

They worked out really well. ;) What are your thoughts on adding a little sugar to speed things up? A tip to help with crying is to not cut the root end of the onion of until last as that's where most of the tears are stored. Oh and if you slice onions with a slice of bread in your mouth it helps too.
@marystestkitchen9 жыл бұрын
While tricks like adding sugar are fine, imo, the slow cooking method without any help is still my preferred method. It just has a particular flavour that I enjoy. Aaaand I have clumsily burned a pan by using too much sugar once. Ahaahahaha Thanks for your cutting onions tip. I used to use safety goggles when cutting onions which was the BEST solution that I tried. But when I moved homes, I lost them... I should get new ones... There's a hardware store only a few blocks from my place...
@disconouvo30379 жыл бұрын
ha ha safety goggles. Yup I hear you on the burnt pan. I'll slow cook some onions as I feel there is a recipe that will need them coming up lol

I make these in the crock pot. I add a splash of balsamic vinegar and a little salt. The great thing about it I don't have to babysit it. I turn the crock pot on high an in 2-3 hours it's ready. I do peek in a couple of times n stir the onions but don't have to worry about sticking or burning. on another note, I love to watch your videos. love how short they are but packed full of information n u are always so funny. thanks for the inspiration. :)

Hey Mary, maybe you should buy a knife like this: i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae360/chc_hmc/ChefsKnives.jpg I find these best for slicing thinly, quickly and precisely. They're very good for the chopping back and forth motion too. Especially if you use a sharpening stone on them regularly.
@marystestkitchen9 жыл бұрын
MsWannabeGamer What a beautiful photo of knives :D hehe Excuse me while I wipe my drool. Actually, I am trying to find a Chinese chef's knife which is what I grew up using; those do EVERYTHING with the right technique. The big one that I'm using in this video is of a similar but not quite.
