By popular demand here's the mastering session of the track "Hunting" by Lambstone that we've seen in our video "Loudness is not in Mastering: • Loudness is not in Mas...
As we've seen in that video, loudness is all about the mix, we have to create the potential for a mix to be loud with different techniques and processing like saturation, compression, limiting but in this video David shows us how to bring the track to a competitive level, with the required RMS for commercial release and how he adjust some small details with static and dynamic eq,
clipping and hard limiting.

It's my go to now for any mastering, and I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it. Great vid, I think you nailed the #1 thing about mastering which is that it's just for volume and translatability and is NOT for trying out random tricks or gimmicks that'll just screw up the mix. yes yes. it is all about getting your mix as good as possible. but! many mastering engineers are handed turds and we must polish them. sometimes we need to really breathe life into things. can you do a video on how to "fix" shitty mixes? fixing tonal imbalances and inconsistencies, handling kick+bass conflicts, etc., compression techniques to help compensate for drums being too loud/bad crest factors, even stereo imaging techniques for thin and stale mixes. thanks, i absolutely love this channel.

@mgmthegrand
@mgmthegrand 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Hip-hop is definitely different dynamically, but the "rules" still apply. Use them to taste and they work just as well. That being said, it would be great to see a tutorial where these tips are applied practically to a hip-hop mix. In fact if he could apply the same approach to a hip-hop song as he did with this song, where he does a tutorial with tips on preparing the mix for mastering, then a follow up tutorial like this one focusing specifically on the actual mastering, that would be perfect!

thanks again, Dave. I'd have a question, if you can answer me... Being highly impressed by that tiny -0.2dB cut in ProQ, I am so curious.: did you focus on the ENTIRE mix, when at a certan point that resonance stood out, or your way is to focus on some parts at a time, for example: focus on bass, on kicks, snare, hi end.... back and forth searching for something that needs to be corrected? Does this question make (any) sense? thanks a lot for this channel, really. 😊

Great video! Had a couple questions. When you do your first limiting to see how much limiting you need to get to preferred loudness, what amount of gain reduction would make you choose not to use a clipper? Hope that make sense. Last, for instruments in hip hop, r&b, and Ambient IDM type material, what Lufs or RMS do you aim for. Thank you for all the information, your mixing hip hop course was wonderful! The maximum gain reduction from the Pro L was 5.5 db, not 3 db. That's quite the difference if u ask me. I'm not saying don't make it loud since it's not my choice anyway. But 2.5 db is a significant difference especially in Mastering. Cheers David

Hi. Newbie here. How about a project that starts having some noise (like a tape effect?!) due to the master limiting? I mean I open the project and there is noise before I play the tracks. I can clear it off with a gate, but would that do?
@drumken
@drumken 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the reply! The noise must come from too much gain accumulated through plug-ins (like the limiter) I'd say. Is that 'hiss' sound I hear when I open the project, but don't feel like it's when the music plays. I will deal with it. Thank you! You have some amazing videos that helped me understand things!

Yes I have also noticed better results using two limiters to get less distortion. I use two different "flavored" limiters, usually transients on the first then aggressive or punch on the second, just taking off the last 2db or so.

Hello David! I have recently got back on your channel to re-educate myself. (I been busy with school, and haven't been mixing much. turns out mixing is like math. if you don't practice it, you'll forget it.) I want to know what's your take on "pink noise mixing." I think it looks like a great way to achieve a good volume balance, after being done with the EQ of course.
@ukcrydrytrywhy
@ukcrydrytrywhy 7 жыл бұрын
then setting the actual levels is a matter of taste after the first rough leveling using the pink noise? It'll be great if you do a video about how you do your gain staging!
@germangorchs9938
@germangorchs9938 3 жыл бұрын
@@ukcrydrytrywhy Hey! Just read your comment. My personal perspective is that you actually can use pink noise to do leveling for your starting point, but keep in mind that adjusting all the balance of the mix to the pink noise will make you mixes walk towards the same frecuency balance so you will have to go back to balancing again. I believe is really usefull to get started if you can't find great balance on the mixes but as time pases you will notice that pink noise is only usefull to get a quick static balance of the mix towards the aproach of the frecuency balance of the pink noise wich is really close overall to great sounding music. I know its been 3 years since you put that coment, but let me know what you think 3 years after lol. Cheers!

You were a lot in the red, and around -7 to -8. I've heard you should be around -13 to -16 in order to preserve dynamic range. Is it due to it being metal that you need to be so loud? My last song, I just touched ever so lightly the red in RMS, just so the dynamic range was preserved.

MixbusTV hey thanks for answering! I had a feeling it had something to do with the sound. I'm finding the crash cymbals in my most current production to be problematic...When I view the printed waveform they stand high above. If I just turn their volume down to where they don't do this, they don't seem to have enough emphasis anymore. So my rookie question: how do I go about taming these rogue transient spikes without them losing all their useful energy? Is a dynamic EQ the right choice? saturation? limiter on that channel? compression? something else perhaps? Learning and absorbing...

"never do X", "always...." etc. ---How to identify when I should stop mixing (Otherwise I just tinker in perpetuity) btw, your help on saturation made a world of difference. Much appreciated.
