This is an excellent video! I'm a 77-year-old ex-golfer. In my younger days I played to a 2 handicap but was always plagued with inconsistent putting. Twenty years ago I was involved in a motorcycle accident that shattered my leg, but worst of all ruptured several discs in my neck and lower back. Swinging the clubs caused excruciating pain, so I had to quit. Just last week I dusted off the clubs and took a few gentle practice swings and found I could swing with some discomfort but not the debilitating pain I experienced in the past. Now I'm looking forward to getting back out on the practice range and eventually the course. I've looked at dozens of KZbin videos on putting, from Tiger to Shiels to Meandmygolf and all the others, and they all had really good points and tips, but none of them were as straightforward and "relaxed" as this one, giving us great information in an informal pleasant way and showing us great routines to establish in order to dial in our putting technique. You put a lot of information into a short video, and hit on the most salient points of a good putting stroke. I'm determined to practice these suggestions religiously inside until this severe inclement weather passes by and I get a chance to get back outside. My goal, if my back continues to hold up, is to shoot my age on a long par-72 course. This video will help me reach that goal. Thank you!

Aiming for a "shoot my age" is too stressful. Hit average drives and do excellent chips and puts to get to 90, not 72
@timlillard390 Жыл бұрын
@@briancowley1954 Hahahaha. Shooting my age is a goal, not an obsession, and honestly not worth stressing over. I doubt, with my physical issues, that I will be able to break 80, although breaking 90 is a realistic and attainable target. I have shot many rounds in the 60s in my younger days so the concept is not foreign to me. I’ll let you know how things look when I get back on the course.

It's great watching these videos. It ensures me that I'm on the right path. That being said... I think the best thing for any single person wanting to get better at putting...take your time. It gets extremely repetitive. To the point where you get ancy and want to keep moving on or trying something new. Learn to be slow and really focus on what is happening when you go fast or slow. I promise if you go half the speed you normally go, in practice... you'll sink A LOT MORE PUTTS! Thx Danny. Cheers to this season! Love the one - two - three routine. I know that I think too long over putts. The old mantra of "think long, think wrong" really applies here. Will take these tips to the course next time I play. Your routine reminds me of my grandson's play (he's almost 4) and how he just walks up, lets his body line itself up and when he swings, the putts either goes in or comes very close. He does not fret the miss, just swings again and sinks it.

I was a scratch player but a terrible short putter all of my like. So at about age 65 I took it on. I spent about 200 hours under a 7 foot string to the hole and I FINALLY learned how to putt like a touring pro. It was very frustrating to learn. The most important thing is you have to understand the stroke. For the most part it is not what you think because of the tilt on the shaft. The people who manufactured "the Putting Arc" had it right, and that is why every touring pro has used one. But then it is more than just that. Once you do have a good stroke you have to learn to allow the putter's own momentum to control itself. A big flat topped Super Stroke grip really helps with this and that is why tour players all use it. And when you get the putter controlling itself very little else is important. That's why many tour players move all over the world as they putt today (unlike before). And this is why Ben Crenshaw wants the club almost falling out of your hands. And it is why Tiger and literally all tour players today "release" the club. You are releasing the putter to it's own momentum alone. They never explain that. And with a proper stroke it is then ALWAYS square to your target at impact. Then Tiger's "right hand only" drill is ultra important. It teaches you to go under with the blade and not around as you go through the ball. That is why he practices this way constantly. (I can now make 100 in a row from 6 feet with my right hand only just like Tiger.) Advice... Build a putter out of square wooden stock and rest the square shaft on a stair step as you stroke. This is the easy way to find out what a proper stroke really is. You will most likely be VERY surprised as you watch the blade (made out of wood). The people who manufacture the Putting Arc also sell an added clip on device to show you the same thing. When the putter glides unrotated on a single tilted plane, it will appear to your eyes to open going back and close going through and be swinging on an arc. But you are not manipulating it one iota with your hands or arms. That is what you see. It's almost an optical illusion. Then when released it is always square to your target at impact. This why all tour players make virtually everything short these day. It is not a God given talent, it is a learned skill based on scientific facts. But if you don't learn how a stroke actually works first, and if you won't then release the club to it's own momentum, you are wasting your time like I did all of my life. Hitting against a stiff left wrist is why all of us back in the day were horrible putters including most touring pros. And Dave Pelz didn't actually know his own ass from a hole in the ground. But guys like Tiger, Crenshaw, Stockton, and Stan Utley did. Especially add Michael Breed to that list too. Breed can actually tell you how to then increase your chance of making short putts by 50 percent. And it works too. All the new "young guns" use that technique. Me too. I think Fowler and Spieth are the poster child's of that method. Watch the "lift" as they come through the ball. That is NOT about good roll. It's about aiming a little right and closing the clubface down EVERY TIME by lifting at impact on a tilted plane. Remember Nicklaus's "bread and butter" fade on drives. Same thing in reverse on putts. And putting great Stan Utley has said, "I have no problem with a player hooking the ball into the hole". The chances of making it increase by about 50 percent due to an increase in the margin for error. It is one sided only.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, much appreciated
@mesillahills4 жыл бұрын
My main breakthrough came from a young touring pro hopeful named Robert Pounds at Picacho Hill CC in Las Cruces, NM showed me something. I later slipped him 100 bucks for this one. I never realized that the alignment/angle of the blade to the target when stroking the ball on a single tilted plane is highly dependent on the distance of the putter blade from the ground. THIS IS CRITICAL !!!. If you hold the blade really low to the ground well through impact is stays aimed at the target much longer. But the young gun pro's today don't necessarily do this. Many to most of them "lift" abruptly at impact. Same rules apply. The blade closes when lifted on a tilted plane. THAT"S BECAUSE IT IS FURTHER OFF THE GROUND. So if you aim at the right side of the cup, AND LIFT near impact, the entire width of the hole is your margin for error. (Utley's - hook it into the hole). But if you aim at the center of the hole and don't lift while keeping the blade low and square, your margin for error is only one-half the hole (each way to the hole's edges from center). These guys aren't lifting for good role as we all have believed forever. They are lifting to reliably close down the putter blade face every time WITH CERTAINTY and thus create a much larger margin for error for themselves (the entire width of the hole). By lifting they are never going to miss right even through they aimed right.. And it works once you know how to the properly stroke and how to release the club. But keep doing that Tiger Woods right hand only drill like he does all the time to this day. The tendency of the right hand is to want to go around CC after impact. You have to drill it into your brain to go UNDER, not around, and stay square with the blade to the plane instead. This gives you a really consistent stroke. Like Tiger does, I do about half my practice strokes from 6 feet and in with the right hand only. You gotta burn that in. Like real estate, it's ROTATION. ROTATION, ROTATION..... not. And straight back, straight through is the curse of the world. That is 100 percent arm and hand manipulation which never works. Making a putt is 100 percent luck. Some days you are lucky, and some days you are not. Don't brag after a lucky day because there is a tomorrow.

Great video Danny and one of the few good videos I've seen on KZbin on the subject of putting. Because there are so many different putting style types, grip methods, putters (equipment), philosophies etc. putting has, in my view, become the "orphan" of golf instruction. There's lots of good stuff on driving, fairway woods, hybrids, iron play (long and mid) as well as wedge play but there's surprisingly little on putting, particularly putting technique. This is quite surprising since we clearly use the putter more any other club in the bag. In fact in a theoretical perfect par round on a par 72 course 36 strokes will be puts and only 14 will be drivers assuming you use the driver on all par 4s and par 5s. Additionally, statistics show that of those 36 strokes 18 will be under 6 feet. Danny, I really think you could do a great series of putting videos with additional topics like: square to square putting versus open to closed putting, blade versus mallet putters, putter grip types, putter loft, green reading, lag putting, mid and short range putting, putting drills, etc. Thanks again for all the great content!
@DanielMaude4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment Paul and Im in complete agreement with you. There just isn't enough emphasis on putting here on KZbin. The REASON not enough golfers seem to want to watch them. Take this video, 2 days after publishing it it sits at 25k views. A usual video of mine focused on the irons or driver can be easily 5 times more popular. One or two unpopular videos and KZbin seem to reduce how often they show your videos. It's a tricky balance to get right.

Thanks, Danny I have tended to use a face-balanced putter. I also use plumb-bobbing to confirm what I can see. From your instruction, I check my line by rotating my head and looking along the line with my dominant eye, when my eyes return to the ball I am ready to go. I think I may have to make sure I get my legs and head steady (every time) I putt and let my body swing my arms.

Good on you for focusing on putting speed. That is the key to 2-putts. If you get the speed right, the second putt is typically straight uphill. BUT the issue with most golfers is *not really knowing* how fast the green is--especially as it changes throughout the day! That's why the best putters more less *intuitively* gather green-speed feedback from each and every putt they make--even from breaking putts! What they're unconsciously doing is explained in my book, *Comprehensive Keys to the Green* . Once you understand how to make adjustments from putt to putt all the way around the course, speed control comes naturally. :__)

I like the tee peg options. I prefer to putt between two marks ( like walking through a room and missing the furniture) rather than putting over a specific point. The specific point seems too easier to miss slightly; putting between two points can be a little bit more forgiving. Good for confidence.

Lots of info in this video Danny. I use the technique you describe of just going with instinct like you're throwing a ball to someone. Just take all thoughts out of your mind and feel free and just putt. Putting is the best bit of my game and this helps me a lot. I will adopt your first tip though as never consciously think of this and also i tend to just aim at the hole instead of a target closer to me so will put this into my routine also. Start the season next weekend at a new club so excited to get started. Your driver tips from last week certainly helped me last night on the range. So fingers crossed for a good year. Thanks as always Danny my divorce is nearly sorted so will be down to see you as promised later in the year 👍

Great video Danny. Very helpful and a sructured approach. To add my contribution I find that staring at the hole for at least five seconds before striking the ball helps a lot with distance control and the guessing game.

I've been enjoying your videos, Danny. Appreciate the way you explain things! Could you make a video on putting grips? I know there are a few different philosophies out there - would love to get your takes and preferences.

Nice channel this one. So much to learn and so little time though. I like how often I see you following your own practice tips and making really nice shots surprising yourself like when you just casually put that ball in (10:44).

Just coming back here for some more feedback. 15 years ago I was fairly good at putting due to massive amounts of playing mini golf in my youth. I used to involve the pelvis and legs some and had never thought much about the head really as it all worked out pretty well for me. Now when I picked up golf again after some 15 years of 'family stuff' I just could not put at all. Mostly doing 3 putts and sometimes more. I took these tips to the training ground and started putting with the arms etc. Spent only some 15-20 mins practice (I only have so much time...) and already there I started to see difference. first hole I played, I put down a birdie from around 3 meters. Not fantastic, I know, but this was easily a two or three put before (that green is not flat). Following rounds I have had only a few 3 puts, and then typically with first from fairway/fore green that I probably should have chipped if I was not going all in for putting (I have always chipped better than I put). Last round, zero 3 puts and about 50/50 between 2 puts and 1 puts. I don't expect to stay at that level but the difference is massive. You have made me a happier person. Thanks!

You could also drop a chalk line with the tee pegs for a straight line to the cup.
